Plans for the erection of this church were approved by the Cleckheaton Local Board on 19 Dec 1887.
The foundation stone for this church was laid on 17 Mar 1888 by Mrs Lawrence Hardy of Low Moor House (The Low Moor Company). The land for the church and parsonage had been donated by Sir Mathew Wilson, who was Lord of the Manor of the Bierley estate. The cost of the building was expected to be in the region of £4000 of which £3000 had been already subscribed. The Kaye family from Bierley had donated £1600 and the Low Moor Company £500.
The church would accommodate 443 people but the original cost did not include the tower. The architects for the building were Messrs Milnes & France of Bradford.
On 24 Apr 1889, the Bishop of Ripon, The Rev. Dr. Boyd Carpenter, consecrated the church in the presence of a large congregation.
Although the church wasn't built until 1889, baptism records date back to 1878 and which were performed at the nearby Mission Room.
