Quarry Inn

Located at Quarry Lane, Hightown in premises known as Quarry House. In a newspaper article dated 1871 it was also the home of "Hightown Gardens" just 10 minutes walk from Cleckheaton Station and from which a view of 30 miles can be obtained. Dancing every Saturday evening with William Fenton's Quadrille Band. Teas, hot water and other refreshments as well as ale, porter and cigars of the best quality. Strict order and decorum will be adhered to and an admission charge of 3d made. The premises were closed for business in 1934.

23 Aug 1869 - Brewster Sessions - Annual session for the granting and renewal of licences was held at Dewsbury. It being the first session in which the new Wine and Beer Act was put in force. The licence for Whitfield Webster of the Quarry Inn, Hightown was granted without any objection.

2 Apr 1871 - Census - Quarry Lane Inn, Hightown. Beerhouse keeper recorded as Whitfield Webster & family. He was also a gardener.

25 Aug 1879 - Death Notice - Whitfield Webster (known as "Old Whit") of Quarry House Gardens died suddenly in his vinery.

3 Nov 1879 - Licence Transfer - Quarry House Inn, Hightown. From Whitfield Webster to Rebecca Webster (his widow).

6 Oct 1880 - Probate - Whitfield Webster , beerhouse keeper of Hightown who died 18 Aug 1879 left an estate valued at under £100.

3 Apr 1881 - Census - Quarry House. Beerhouse keeper recorded as Rebecca Webster who was also a gardener.

5 Apr 1891 - Census - Quarry Gardens Beer House. Beerhouse keeper recorded as Rebecca Webster.

31 Mar 1901 - Census - Quarry House, Hightown Heights. Rebecca Webster recorded as a market gardener & innkeeper.
