Quakerism in the Spen Valley dates way back to the mid 1600s with George Fox, founder of the Quaker movement, preaching at Hightown in 1652.
In 1665 the Green family create a Quaker burial ground at Sepulchre in Hare Park Lane.
In 1701 a meeting house was built near Halifax Road in Quaker Lane, however evidence suggests a Quaker burial ground was present in the area many years before this time.
In 1883 a meeting house at Scholes was opened.
Prior to any Quaker establishment in the area, the meeting house at Brighouse was utilised by a membership that stretched far and wide, including Leeds, Bradford, Huddersfield and Halifax areas.
