As we research the area in more detail, we can hopefully start to identify these premises and those that have been identified have comments in brackets after their name.

23 Jul 1869 - Court Case - James Pickering, landlord of the White Lion beerhouse, Heckmondwike was charged with a nasty assault on one of his servants. Fined £3 and costs or 2 months in prison.
23 Aug 1869 - Brewster Sessions - Annual licence renewals were heard at Dewsbury and granted to John Firth, Empress Inn, Bank (Back?) Lane.
23 Aug 1869 - Brewster Sessions - Annual licence renewals were heard at Dewsbury and granted to Daniel Berry, Crescent Hotel, Kaye Street.
23 Aug 1869 - Brewster Sessions - Annual licence renewals were heard at Dewsbury and granted to Richard Scott, Market Tavern, Westgate.
23 Aug 1869 - Brewster Sessions - Annual session for the granting and renewal of licences was held at Dewsbury. It being the first session in which the new Wine and Beer Act was put in force. Richard Burns of the Wellington Inn, Royles Fold had been convicted of permitting drunkenness and a recent visit to the premises found the cellar nine inches deep in sewage. His application was refused.
23 Aug 1869 - Brewster Sessions - Annual session for the granting and renewal of licences was held at Dewsbury. It being the first session in which the new Wine and Beer Act was put in force. Sarah Ann Scott of the Star Inn, Heckmondwike had her application refused. The Police stated that "loose women" were kept on the premises.

James Pickering of the White Lion Inn, Heckmondwike had his licence refused. He had been convicted of several assaults, one of which was a particularly nasty one on a servant in his employ.
