Located in Cheapside and known locally as "Paddy Judge's" or "The Mucky Duck". Cheapside was originally called School Street. Premises were demolished to make way for the precinct through to Albion Street.
Frank Peel talks about Cleckheaton in the 1830's and mentions that the Waggon & Horse public house was taken on by George & Nanny Garside and an enlarged trade was done. The property was, however, owned by William Clayton who later demolishes it and builds the Wickham Arms. Nanny (or Ann as she was known) then established the Old Oak in School Street, nowadays known as Cheapside.
6 May 1854 - Newspaper Article - Work people employed by Tattersfield Brothers partook of an excellent supper at the Old Oak Inn, house of Mrs Garside. Songs and glees were sung and a quadrille band entertained at intervals.
1857 - Kelly's Post Office Directory lists Mrs Ann Garside as a beer retailer, School Street. Premises not named but evidence suggests it was here.
7 Apr 1861 - Census entry - Market Street, Cleckheaton. Premises not named but evidence suggests it was here. School Street (as Cheapside was once known) does not feature at all in the 1861 census, hence the assumption and coupled with the fact that the premises can be positively linked to the Garside family before and after this event.
