Swan Inn

Located at the main crossroads of the Leeds & Huddersfield and Dewsbury & Bradford roads at Millbridge. Early records suggest the premises were called the White Swan, the Swan with two Necks and the Alma Hotel.  Demolished about 1980 due to it being structurally unsound.

31 Jan 1846 - Found dog - A pointer was found and the owner may collect it from the White Swan Inn, Millbridge, house of William Whiteley.

1847 - Whites Trade Directory - Swan with two Necks, Millbridge. Landlord recorded as William Whiteley.

24 Sep 1856 - Newspaper Article - Members of the Oddfellows' and Shepherds' lodges met at the Alma Hotel, Millbridge, house of William Whiteley, to celebrate the opening of a new lodge room recently added to the premises.

1857 - Trade Directory - Post Office Directory of Yorkshire records the premises as the Alma Hotel with William Whiteley the landlord. Given the fact that there was Alma Foundry adjacent to the premises, and that William Whiteley was still landlord at this time, it is believed the entry relates to this location.

4 Jul 1859 - Licence Transfer - Swan Inn, Liversedge. From William Whiteley to John (sic) Jim Stott.

7 Apr 1861 - Census - Mill Bridge. Premises not named but evidence suggests it was here.

23 Aug 1869 - Brewster Sessions - Annual session for the granting and renewal of licences was held at Dewsbury. It being the first session in which the new Wine and Beer Act was put in force. The licence for Edwin J Stott of the White Swan was granted without any objection.

2 Apr 1871 - Census - Swan Hotel, Millbridge. Landlord recorded as widower Edwin J Stott & young family.

21 Jul 1877 - Death Notice - Mr Edwin J Stott of the Swan Hotel died suddenly at the premises after being seized with a fit.

5 Nov 1877 - Licence Transfer - Swan Hotel, Liversedge. From Edwin Jim Stott to Joseph Stott.

3 Apr 1881 - Census - Millbridge. Premises not named but evidence suggests it was here. Innkeeper recorded as Joseph Stott & family.

4 Jul 1887 - Licence Transfer - Swan Hotel, Millbridge. From Joseph Stott to George Alfred Haley.

4 May 1888 - Court Case - George Alfred Haley convicted of selling outside of permitted hours. Fined 20s and costs.

5 Apr 1891 - Census - Millbridge. Premises not named but evidence suggests it was here. Innkeeper recorded as George Alfred Haley & family.

3 Mar 1892 - Probate Calendar - George Alfred Haley of the Swan Hotel, Liversedge died 14 Feb 1892 and left an estate valued at £821 6s 4d.

2 May 1892 - Licence Transfer - Swan Hotel, Millbridge. From George Alfred Haley to Sarah Eleanor Ineson.

May 1900 - Brewery - Acquired by Springwell Brewery. 

2 Jul 1900 - Licence Transfer - Swan Hotel, Millbridge. From Sarah Eleanor Ineson to Tom William Strickland.

24 Dec 1900 - Court Case - Tom William Strickland convicted of permitting drunkenness in his premises. Fined 20s and costs.

31 Mar 1901 - Census - Leeds Road, Millbridge. Premises not named but evidence suggests it was here. Licenced victualler recorded as Tom W Strickland.

4 Apr 1904 - Licence Transfer - Swan Hotel, Millbridge. From Tom William Strickland to Thomas Wright.

5 Oct 1908 - Licence Transfer - Swan Hotel, Millbridge. From Thomas Wright to James Rhymes.

28 Oct 1925 - Brewery - An application was made by Springwell Brewery, Heckmondwike for possession of the Swan Hotel from licensee William Dearnley. Dismissed.
