For many years the Congregational Chapel at Providence Place, Cleckheaton, had been seeking additional premises in the town due to out-growing their premises. The idea became somewhat shelved but eventually a plot of land was purchased on the opposite side of town and a new congregational chapel was no longer a pipe dream.
The Foundation stone was laid for the chapel by Sir James Watts of Manchester in 1874 and opening services were conducted in 1876.Â
