When Civil Registration commenced in 1837 it also became possible for couples to marry outside of religious venues and ceremonies were performed at Register Offices. The details recorded by the Registrar were the same as those recorded in religious venues but there are no readily available records of these. The marriages that appear on this site have been taken from various newspaper reports of the day and only give very basic information.
The marriages at Bradford are only selected and relate to those with connections to the Spen valley. The ones at Gomersal seem to stop appearing in the newspapers at the end of 1871, so it is assumed that this was around the time when proceedings were transferred to Dewsbury.
This project is as complete as possible but further entries will be added if ever located.
