Gomersal (Great and Little) are two villages and an ecclesiastical district in the parish of Birstall and township of Gomersal, 1 mile southwest from Birstall railway station, 4 northwest from Dewsbury, 6 south by easy from Bradford, in the Morley division of the West Riding, Dewsbury Union, Craven archdeaconry and Ripon bishopric, situated on the road from Bradford to Huddersfield.
The church of St. Mary is a handsome stone building in the pointed style of architecture, erected in 1851 at the cost of £3000; it has a nave, aisles, chancel and tower. The living is a perpetual curacy worth £150 yearly, with a new residence; it is in the alternate gift of the Crown and the Bishop of Ripon; the Rev. M.S. Daley, B.A., is the incumbent. There are chapels for Independents, Wesleyans, Wesleyan Reformers and Moravians.
There is a National school for boys and girls and there are Sunday schools held at the different places of worship. There are several coal mines in the township. The principal trades carried on here are worsted yarn manufacturers, chemical works, blanket manufacturers, cloth for the army and police, cotton spinners' machine makers and card makers.
A Mechanic's Institute has been erected here at a cost of £1800 and is used occasionally for lectures and public meetings. The Population in 1851 was 9926 and the acreage is 3119. The population of the ecclesiastical district is 3167. The soil is clay.
There are charities of £11 yearly value. The hamlets are: Birkenshaw (which is an ecclesiastical district with a population of 2324), Birkenshaw Bottom, Birstall, Drub. Field Head, Holden Cloyds, Latham, Moor Lane, Popeley Gate, Snutts and Spen.
