CLECKHEATON
Prior to the formation of the Cleckheaton Local Board Fire Brigade, there were various units based at some of the local larger mills, such as George Anderton & Sons at Victoria Mills, Wm Atkinson & Sons at St. Peg Mills and E Wadsworth & Sons at Broomfield Mills. Equipment at this time would be very basic.
4 May 1867 - Cleckheaton Fire Service established. Premises located at Northgate.
The services of the Fire Brigade were not free and business premises had to have fire insurance to cover the event of a fire. It was necessary for owners of premises to produce their insurance certificate before the fire brigade would attend!
1 Jun 1870 - Mr John Ellis, Captain of the Cleckheaton Fire Brigade appeared before the Local Board and requested that the firemen should be provided each with a new coat. They had been in office over 3 years and the coats they were supplied with only cost 13s each. After a lengthy discussion it was resolved that £20 would be granted for clothing.
30 Apr 1877 - It was passed by the Cleckheaton Local Board that the Fire Brigade would not attend fires outside of the Cleckheaton district unless the owner of the premises signed for a tariff of charges for their services.
12 Jun 1878 - A committee, formed to deal specifically with Fire Brigade matters, was appointed by the Cleckheaton Local Board.
13 Oct 1884 - At a meeting of the Cleckheaton Local Board, it was agreed to purchase 200 yards of hose piping for the Fire Bridge.
1890 - Plans for the new Town Hall in Cleckheaton show that part of the building would be used by the fire brigade for their equipment and engines, but that seemed to have been shelved with the acquisition of alternate property in Chapel Street.
5 Apr 1891 - Census for Cleckheaton shows the "Fire Brigade Station" was located at 70 Northgate.
1891 - Cleckheaton Fire Service move premises to Bradford Road/Chapel Street.
23 Aug 1892 - In the aftermath of the Marsh Mills chimney disaster, the Cleckheaton Local Board purchase a 40 foot fire escape ladder for use by the Fire Brigade. The escape was made by Shand & Mason and was delivered at the Fire Brigade station on 20 Jan 1893.
31 Dec 1895 - Cleckheaton Fire Station was connected to the local telephone exchange. It also considered connecting lines to the homes of firemen.
1 Jan 1901 - Mr John Ellis, Superintendent of the Fire Brigade for over 30 years tenders his resignation to the District Council.
29 Oct 1901 - Death of John Ellis after a prolonged illness.
26 Jul 1920 - Mr. E.R. Cliff, formerly of the Halifax Fire Brigade, is appointed Superintendent of the Spenborough Fire Brigade, based at Cleckheaton.
1925 - Wilton House and grounds, Westgate were purchased for over £7000 for the development of public services. Cleckheaton Fire Station was subsequently built in the grounds.
10 Jul 1926 - Cleckheaton Fire Station officially opened at bottom of Hightown Road.
1934 - Superintendent of the Fire Brigade is Richard Kimberley, residing at Wilton House
HECKMONDWIKE
3 May 1902 - Official opening of Heckmondwike Fire Station.
