Savile Arms, Hunsworth

Appeared on the scene in the early 1820s, replacing the nearby Shears which was apparently a little further up the road and demolished in 1822. Still going strong today.

1828 - Pigot's Trade Directory - Landlord recorded as James Gomersall.

1834 - Pigot's Trade Directory - Savile Arms, Hunsworth. Landlord recorded as Jos. Gomersall.

1841 - Trade Directory - Pigot & Co., National & Commercial Directory records Joseph Gomersall at the Savile Arms

30 Sep 1881 - Probate Calendar - George Longbottom, farmer, maltster and innkeeper of Hunsworth died 17 Aug 1881 and leaves an estate valued at £3921.

5 Apr 1891 - Census - Savile's Arms, Hunsworth. Innkeeper recorded as George Booth & family. He is also recorded as a farmer.

16 Feb 1895 - Newspaper Article - It was reported that a "strange dog" found it's way into the Savile Arms at Hunsworth and bit a young man. The dog was later killed by order of the police and was found to have suffered from rabies. The bite victim was sent to Paris for the "Pasteur treatment".
