Located on Westgate at its junction with West Street. Westgate was previously known as Upper Lane and West Street had earlier been known as Jachin Street which was perhaps named so because of an early landlord of these premises called Jachin Firth.

3 Mar 1910 - Bradford Brewster sessions - Police objected to several Cleckheaton licences. One being that of the Malt Shovel Inn, tenanted by Matthew Redman. The objection was on the grounds that the rooms were badly arranged and that during the past nine years, the house had changed hands four times. No catering was done and there was no yard or stables. The rateable value was one of the lowest in the town. Licence renewed.
