Heckmondwike

Heckmondwike is a township and ecclesiastical district in the parish of Birstal, distant 2 miles northwest from Dewsbury, 9 miles southwest by south of Leeds, 9 east from Halifax, 7 northeast from Huddersfield, 7 southeast of Bradford, 35 from York and 180 from London, in Morley wapentake, Dewsbury Union, Craven archdeaconry and bishopric of Ripon, and on the road from Leeds to Huddersfield.
The Lancashire and Yorkshire railway has a station here. The church of St. James is a stone building, in the Gothic style of architecture, erected in 1831; it has a nave, chancel, north and south aisles and a tower with spire. The living is a perpetual curacy worth £150 yearly, with good residence, in the patronage of the vicar of Birstall; the Rev. E.N. Carter is the incumbent.
The Independents have two handsome chapels. The one in Upper George Street, in which there is an organ, was built in 1854 at a cost of upwards of £3000; it is a spacious and handsome structure and will accommodate 800 persons; there is a good school room underneath. The other chapel, situate on the top of Heckmondwike, is a spacious and elegant structure, recently rebuilt at a cost of upwards of £2000; this also contains an organ. The Wesleyans have a neat and commodious chapel in Westgate. The Reform Wesleyan chapel in Westgate, was erected in 1851 at a cost of £1700: it will accommodate about 500 persons and contains a powerful organ built by Halmshaw of Birmingham; there is a Sunday school attached, attended by about 250 children.
There is a National and a Town school for both sexes: and Sunday schools attached to the different places of worship. There are two fairs for cattle; one on the first Monday in May, the other on the first Monday in November. There is a blanket market held in the Blanket Hall twice a week, Monday and Thursday, attended by nearly 100 manufacturers, and, next to Dewsbury, is the principal market for that kind of manufacture.
The population of the township and ecclesiastical district in 1851 was 4540, and from its rapid growth, cannot at present be less than 6000. The acreage is 603; the soil is clay with subsoil of the same; the principal part is pasture; the chief grain crop is wheat. The Duke of Leeds is lord of the manor, but the land is divided amongst various owners. There are coal mines in this township. There are factories for making carpets, rugs, pilots, flushing, etc., but the chief manufacture of the place is blankets; the principal manufactory here has, during the late war, derived a very considerable share of prosperity from supplying our own army and those of France and other countries.
The town is lighted with gas; the works are at Millbridge, a hamlet of Liversedge but immediately adjoining. The Health of Towns Act has been applied to this place and it is considered will have a beneficial effect, as its rapid growth renders a well organised local governing body necessary. The place will shortly be supplied with water, an Act having been obtained for it in conjunction with Dewsbury and Batley. The public buildings are the Blanket Hall in Westgate before named, and the Freemasons' Hall in Market Street, used for public meetings and lectures, concerts, etc. The streets are clean and well paved.
