British Oak

Located on the main Halifax Road, once known as the Wakefield to Halifax Turnpike. This is sadly another pub no longer in existence. It was demolished some years ago to make way for new housing. 

23 Aug 1869 - Brewster Sessions - Annual session for the granting and renewal of licences was held at Dewsbury. It being the first session in which the new Wine and Beer Act was put in force. William Binns of the British Oak Inn, who had been convicted in July and fined £1 for permitting drunkenness, had his licence renewed but was told "if he offended again, it would go."

2 Apr 1871 - Census - British Oak, Hightown. Beer house keeper recorded as William Binns & family. He was also a wire drawer.

4 Nov 1872 - Licence Transfer - Premises not named, Hightown. From William Binns to William Townend.

4 May 1874 - Licence Transfer - Premises not named, Hightown. From William Townend to Joshua Oddy.

6 Mar 1876 - Licence Transfer - Premises not named, Hightown. From Joshua Oddy to John Wear (previously at the Fountain, Roberttown).

3 Apr 1881 - Census - Halifax Road, Hightown. Premises not named. Beerhouse keeper recorded as John Wear & Family. He was also a carter.

5 Apr 1891 - Census - British Oak, Hightown. John Wear & family residing here. He is a farmer & beer seller.

31 Mar 1901 - Census - British Oak Inn, Halifax Road, Hightown. The widower John Wear & family recorded as landlord. He was also a farmer.

6 Feb 1905 - Licence Transfer - British Oak, Heights Hill. From John Wear to Sam Wear.

1 Feb 1909 - Licence Transfer - British Oak, Heights Hill. From Sam Wear to John Green.

2 Apr 1911 - Census - British Oak Inn, Halifax Road. Beer house keeper recorded as John Green & family.

9 Aug 1915 - Licence Transfer - British Oak, Heights Hill. From John Green to Sam Sutcliffe Haigh.

19 Jun 1921 - Census entry - 617 Halifax Road, Hightown Heights. Premises not named but evidence suggests it was here.
