An article dated 1916 in the Cleckheaton Guardian states that the Northgate now stands where a couple of cottage houses once stood. These were used as a beer house called the Carriage & Pair. The article continues to state that in the 1840's a Betty Gibson was proprietor and afterwards it was taken on by John "Johnny" Oade, who was one of the local carriers.

1857 - Kelly's Post Office Directory lists Joseph Rooks as a beer retailer, Westgate. Premises are not named but is believed to be here. It is also believed the address is incorrect and should be Back Lane (later Northgate).

11 Sep 1872 - Large sale of property held at the Royal Hotel in Cleckheaton. One of the lots included a dwelling in Northgate used as a beerhouse known by the sign of the Carriage and Pair and occupied by John Midgley. The property owner is the late David Holdroyd.
17 Sep 1872 - Property Auction - Taking place at the Carriage & Pair. Landlord recorded as John Midgley.
Jan 1873 - Brewery - Acquired by Richard Holmes & Sons.
14 Oct 1875 - Court Case - John Midgley, landlord of the Carriage & Pair, was convicted of permitting drunkenness and was fined 40s with costs. It was stated by the Police that Mr Midgley was too old and infirm to manage his house and the bench stated he had to conduct his house properly or would lose his licence.
16 Jun 1876 - Newspaper Article - The tenders for the pulling down and rebuilding of the Carriage and Pair Inn have been let as follows: Mason, Abm. Roberts; Joiner, Wm. Isherwood; Plumber, W. Ratcliffe and Plasterer, George Wright.
24 Jul 1876 - Plans were submitted to the Cleckheaton Local Board for the rebuilding of the Carriage and Pair Inn. These were approved.
11 Sep 1876 - Licence Application - Robert Longbottom of the Carriage and Pair Inn, Northgate was granted a new licence.
Feb 1877 - Licenses - Robert Longbottom gives up possession of the Carriage and Pair Inn, Northgate, in favour of Mr. J.D. Walker, previously of the Golden Lion Lion Inn, Cross Crown Street. The Carriage and Pair will in future be known as the Northgate Hotel and the Mr Amos Wood has now taken the Golden Lion.
