In a series of articles about "Old Cleckheaton," Mr Henry Harrison writes:
"Mr Dixon married Mary, the daughter of Jonas Yates, who built the Nag's Head, now the George Hotel. Mary had a sister named Harriet, and she married a man called Wrathmell, who during one period of his life, kept a beerhouse known as the Upper George, where the Co-operative Central Stores now are."Â
This man is identified as John Wrathmell who died in 1847. He married Harriet Yates in 1820 and there is nothing, other than the above, to link him to these premises. He was a card maker by trade and in 1841 the family was residing at Lane End, Cleckheaton. It is unclear as to the period he was at this house, but the following article could relate to his death
3 Jun 1848 - To Let - A good beer-house at Cleckheaton, called the Upper George. Apply to Mr Newsom. Bull's Head, Little Gomersal.
