In the early part of the 1870s a man by the name of Thomas Birkhead Oldfield wrote a series of 10 articles for the local newspapers of the day entitled "Rambles on the slopes of Liversedge."
Thomas Birkhead Oldfield was a doctor & surgeon, born in 1819 at Dewsbury and lived at Hill Top House in Heckmondwike.
He obviously enjoyed his afternoon strolls and steeping himself in the history of the area surrounding him.
These articles give an interesting insight into some of the local "treasures" and often go into some quite fine details of various houses and other places of interest scattered around the "slopes of Liversedge."
Another lengthy article by this author is Heckmondwike in 1805, also found on this website.
