Yew Tree (Old)

An old coaching house which was located at Headlands. James Mitchell once running a carrying business from here with 8 or 9 waggons. Was also known as the Pack Horse in the early days.

1773 - Register of Alehouses - Premises not named but evidence suggests it to be here. Licence holder recorded at Sarah Johnson.

9 Jun 1801 - Bankruptcy Hearing - Held at the Pack Horse Inn, house of Mrs. Sarah Johnson.

22 Sep 1803 - Bankruptcy Hearing - Held at The Yew Tree, house of Robert Rockliffe.

12 May 1804 - Death Notice - Died last week, Mrs. Johnson, late of the Pack Horse Inn, Roberttown, near Huddersfield. She is buried at St. Peter, Birstall and is recorded as from Hightown and aged 89 years.

15 Dec 1804 - Bankruptcy Hearing - Held at the Yew Tree Inn, Roberttown, house of Mrs Margaret Rockliffe.

27 May 1805 - Property Auction - Large sale of house and land held at the Pack Horse Inn, Roberttown, the house of Mrs Rockcliffe.

9 Jun 1806 - Property Auction - Licensee recorded as Mrs Rockcliffe.

24 Aug 1808 - Bankruptcy Hearing - Held at the Yew Tree Inn, Roberttown, house of  Mr. Michael Waller.

19 Oct 1812 - Property Auction - Held at the Yew Tree Inn, Roberttown, house of Mr. James Mitchell.

6 Jul 1820 - Property Auction - Landlord listed as James Mitchell.

1822 - Baines Trade Directory - Yew Tree, Roberttown. Landlord recorded as James Mitchell.

9 Oct 1823 - Newspaper Article - James Mitchell, Yew Tree Inn, involved in a fatal accident when buried in a collapse of stone in a quarry near to the pub.

1830 - Baines Trade Directory - Landlord recorded as Ann Mitchell, who was also a coach proprietor.

1 Jan 1836 - Death Notice - Mr Thomas Whitehead of Gomersal, aged 77. He was the father of the late Mrs Ann Mitchell of the Yew Tree, Roberttown.
