Please note that entries for Scholes and Oakenshaw appear in those for Cleckheaton. Hunsworth is recorded after Cleckheaton.
Cleckheaton is an extensive township in the parish of Birstal, consisting of three hamlets, viz. Cleckheaton, Scholes and Oakenshaw; it is 198 miles from London, 5.5 south south east from Bradford, 6.5 east from Halifax and 8 south west from Leeds. Its manufactures consist of woollen cloths, flannels, blankets etc., card making and the machinery required for the use of these trades; the vicinity abounds with coal mines. The population in 1851 amounted to 5170 and is rapidly increasing.
The township is divided into two ecclesiastical districts, Whitechapel and St. John's. The district of Whitechapel consists of the hamlets of Scholes and Oakenshaw, with part of the hamlet of Cleckheaton and contains at the present time a population of about 1600. The church was erected in 1821, but the foundation is very ancient. The living is a perpetual curacy, value £200, without a parsonage house and is in the gift of Mrs Currer of Eshton Hall, who is also lady of the manor. The incumbent, the Rev. R.F. Taylor, M.A., was instituted in 1837.
The district of St. John's consists of the village of Cleckheaton, together with a small portion of each of the townships of Liversedge and Gomersal, and contains at the present time a population of about 4200. The church was erected by Her Majesty's Commissioners in 1830, at a cost of £2700 and was consecrated in 1832. It is surrounded by a large and convenient burial ground. The living is a perpetual curacy, value £150, and a house, and is in the gift of the vicar of Birstal. The incumbent, the Rev. J Seaton, was appointed in 1832.
A piece of land at a convenient distance from the village, was in the year 1853 enclosed as a cemetery. It is not consecrated.
Here are also chapels for the Wesleyans, both of the Old and New Connexions, besides others for Independents and Methodists.
There are also National and British schools. Two fairs are held here for the sale of cattle on the first Wednesday in April and the last Thursday in August.
Extensive gas works, erected in 1836, stand in the adjoining township of Liversedge. The Lancashire and Yorkshire railway company has a station here; and a branch line from Bradford to Mirfield runs through the village.
Commercial listings by surname. Please note that there is a list of private residents prior to this entry and many of the names appear in this listing. Those that do not have been added with the fact they appear in the private resident list by the addition of PR in brackets after their name.
Please note that there are numerous references with the address of Westgate. It is highly suspected that this is incorrect and should be Back Lane which later became Northgate. Westgate was a later name for Upper Lane, another address that also features quite highly in these records. Please also note that the address of School Street is now called Cheapside.
