There are records of "Alehouse" licences having been granted as early as 1771, but unfortunately they did not name any of the premises or where they were located. As we research the area in more detail, we can hopefully start to identify these premises and those that have been identified have comments in brackets after their name.
According to the register of alehouses of 1771, there were 2 recorded premises for the Cleckheaton area. Although none of the premises are named the names of the licence holders are as follows:
Daniel Bateman (who is connected to the White Bear in Oakenshaw).
Abram Smith (who we can link to the Red Lion by other means)

6 Aug 1834 - Court Case - Benjamin Coates, beer-seller, Cleckheaton convicted of selling outside of permitted hours. Fined 40s with 16s costs.
18 Jul 1835 - Court Case - Henry Midwood, keeper of a beerhouse in Cleckheaton was charged with having persons tippling in his house after the prescribed time. In consequence of being convicted of a similar offence some months ago, he was fined £5 and costs.

22 Aug 1861 - Edward Blakeley, beer-seller of Cleckheaton was convicted of selling outside of permitted hours. Fined 40s and costs.
1863/4 - Benjamin Roberts of Upper Lane, described in various reports as a brewer, provision dealer and beerhouse keeper was convicted of various offences under the Excise Laws and fined large amounts of money for the day...which house did he run??
23 Oct 1869 - Bankruptcy hearing at Bradford of Thomas Huby, beerhouse keeper of the New Inn, Cleckheaton. (where was this???)
