The 1939 National Register of England & Wales, or better known as just the 1939 Register, is an important stepping stone between the Census of 1921 and the Census of 1951. The 1931 Census was completely destroyed and the 1941 Census was not taken due to the 2nd World War.
The Register does not contain all the usual details required for a census, and was formed as national database, due to the looming war, for the issue of identity cards. The Register, initially taken on 29 Sep 1939, became a "rolling document" and was subsequently added to and the details were later used by the newly formed National Health Service.
The Register was very much like the census in one aspect, as it was divided into various Enumeration Districts. The Spenborough Urban District has a total of 42 of these Enumeration Districts. Heckmondwike Urban District has a total of 9 Enumeration Districts.
What information does the Register contain?
Like the census, it lists addresses by a consecutive schedule number. It then records all individuals residing at that address with details of their birth date, marital status and occupation. Some additional notes can be found that normally relate to wartime issues. These can indicate if the individual was a member of the ARP (Air Raid Precautions) service, etc. It does not, however, record any details of relationships within the household. People still living have had their details redacted.
Another exciting detail, especially useful for the family historian, is that if a female married after the initial date of the Register, her new married surname is added.
The details below list all of the Enumeration Districts found within Spenborough & Heckmondwike along with the approximate coverage of that area and the number of households. Also recorded are all the unique addresses found in each of those districts. If you have access to the 1939 Register online, these addresses may help in locating individuals if you knew where they resided. Please be aware that streets/roads that are particularly lengthy or form part of the boundary of the district may appear in more than one Enumeration District.Â
