Punch Bowl

Located on Westgate, or Upper Lane as it was once called.  Another of Cleckheaton's oldest establishments. Sadly no longer a pub and  is now a Chinese restaurant and takeaway.

1790 - Scholes School - A subscription of £1 1s was made to the building of the "Old" School at Scholes by Jonathan Kitson of the Punch Bowl.

1803 - Alehouse Register - Although premises not named, evidence suggests it was here. Licensee recorded as Judith Kitson (widow of the above Jonathan).

29 Jun 1822 - Newspaper Archives - Property auction takes place, landlord recorded as Henry Firth

1 Jan 1828 - Pigot's Trade Directory - landlord recorded as Richard Blackburn

1834 - Pigot's Trade Directory - Punch Bowl, Cleckheaton. Landlord recorded as Benjamin Walker.

Jul 1876 - Licence Transfer - Punch Bowl Inn, Cleckheaton. From Isaac Preston to Sam Hodgson, formerly of the White Horse, Gomersal.

24 Apr 1879 - Court Case - A man named Joseph Rodgers was charged with obtaining £1 by false pretences from Sam Hodgson, innkeeper of the Punch Bowl Inn, Cleckheaton. Sentenced to 3 months with hard labour.

12 May 1883 - For Sale/To Let - Wishing to retire, landlord Sam Hodgson puts the Punch Bowl Hotel for Sale or Let. Comprising 2 kitchens, bar, snug, 2 front rooms, bedrooms and bathroom. Stables nearby and also with the only bowling green in Cleckheaton.

Feb 1884 - Brewery - Acquired by Brear & Brown.

5 Apr 1891 - Census - Punch Bowl, 138 Westgate. Licensed victualler recorded as William Booth and large family.

31 Mar 1901 - Census - Punch Bowl Tavern, 138 Westgate. Innkeeper recorded as William Booth and large family.

2 Apr 1911 - Census - Punch Bowl Hotel, Cleckheaton. Squire Bentley (later landlord of the Bull's Head at Gomersal) & his daughter Annie recorded at this address with a female servant. 

14 Dec 1916 - Newspaper Article - Fire at Cleckheaton. A fire was discovered in a store room at the Punch Bowl Hotel, tenanted by Squire Bentley. Damage caused to spirits and cigars valued at £200.

6 Oct 1959 - Sidney Bacon takes over as licensee.
