Engineering Materials

Engineering Materials (Poem by Er. Vivek G. Abhyankar Structural Engineer (Mumbai)

Brick is brittle, Concrete has creep

Steel is stronger, yet it’s cost is deep

Aluminum allows, light weight structure

Yet difficult to shape, it also has a rupture

Plastic has a long, chain of polymer

But for environment has zero glamour

Use of Timber was, rejected due to termites

As it was not, seasoned properly under sunlight

Stone became stronger, laying under a mountain

Still environmental issues made it abandon

Old houses were made, from clay & bamboo

From this a very, few architects had a clue

Nature is nurturing, gives human free

We ‘human’ made it complex, under knowledge tree

We explored new materials, also some are due

We got confused, and could not select even a few

Alloys were developed by metallurgist

Use of alloys in a building, required a mind of a scientist

Tender specifications have become, large and thick

New materials qualify control, has leads to a strike

Construction chemicals has made the problem diverse

According to experts, it’s a time to think reverse

Durability Ductility, Strength & Stiffness

Beyond serviceability how to, fixup material weakness

'Performance’ rating is the, new concept coming up ahead

Time will decide whether, the material make it ‘crusade’

Time has come up, to study old structures

application of Judicial Judgment and basics, at this critical juncture
