We’ve reached the point in the year where a lot of us are experiencing what experts call burnout, but I just like to call it the inability to care about school anymore. If you’re like me and have an “I can take everything on” type of personality, you’ve definitely experienced burnout before. You may have just chalked it up to stress or your workload but if it's been bothering you for a while… it's probably burnout (I'm sorry to be the one to break it to you).
You might be able to ignore it at first, but it will cause emotional and physical exhaustion, cynicism, detachment, a feeling of ineffectiveness, or lack of accomplishment. Some signs of burnout are insomnia, low immunity/frequent illness, detachment, increased irritability, and isolation. (Click here to read about it more in-depth)
Now we’re not here to just focus on the negatives, so here are some ways to deal with burnout. The most important thing to do first is to recognize what you're feeling, and understand that it's completely valid.
A helpful method to deal with it, sourced from research and tons of personal experience, is to create a routine. Not a rigid schedule, but a general routine of what you will do throughout the day AND WRITE IT DOWN. Writing down goals or your ideals will make you much more likely to do it. Definitely accept whatever comes throughout the day, even if it doesn't perfectly fit into your routine but in moments where you feel like you're just done, you will have a structure to fall back on. Also, make sure your routine has activities you genuinely enjoy. (And no I do not mean Netflix and TikTok because those are just even more mind-numbing) Things like biking, or art, or even dancing around in your room. (Not that I do that ;))
Now, this sounds very cliche but the most effective way, in most cases, to avoid burnout is to set reasonable and maybe even low goals. I'm not stupid, so I realize that we can't just drop everything and be like “Oh well I’m not doing anything” but setting unrealistic goals will set you up for more disappointment and worse burnout. Make sure to always reward yourself after completing a goal, too, you deserve that recognition!!
Most importantly, reach out to people who can support you through it, you never have to go through it alone. The Wellness Team at York will always be there for whatever support you need!
