EPISODIO I: LA VENGANZA DE LA ABC
EPISODE I: REVENGE OF ABC
Corría la primavera de 1980, cuando en USA se produjo el primer amago de competencia entre seriales: todo quedaba en familia porque aquel año, sólo competían "Dallas" y su flamante serie-hermana "Knots Landing" (o, a partir de ahora, "California", como se tituló en las televisiones autonómicas, únicas en programarla en nuestro país). Mientras a J.R. le pegaban dos tiros en su oficina, en California, Gary Ewing volvía a la bebida y Val conseguía que acudiera con ella a Alcohólicos Anónimos. "Dallas" se emitía los viernes por la noche y "California", los jueves, y las cadenas rivales de la CBS se exprimían los sesos para arrebatarle la audiencia, aunque fuera a través de clones de la serie tejana.
El inesperado éxito de "Dallas" da lugar a otras series del mismo género, lanzadas por las cadenas competidoras, como "Dynasty", de la ABC ("Dinastía" en España) y "Flamingo Road", de la NBC, ambas emitidas por TVE en su 1ª y 2ª cadena, respectivamente. La CBS continúa superando todo tipo de obstáculos para seguir adelante con la serie, incluso la muerte de su patriarca, Jim Davis (Jock Ewing). En preparación, tiene otra "supersoap" de viticultores millonarios que debutará el año siguiente. Será ese año, también en primavera, cuando se produce el primer estallido de guerra entre las dos nuevas series antes mencionadas, que llegan a su primer final de temporada, y esto es lo que ofrecían:
- "Dinastía": La serie de los Carrington acaba su 1ª etapa con la enigmática entrada de Alexis en la sala donde se juzgaba a Blake Carrington (John Forsythe) por el asesinato (premeditado o no, accidental o no) del ex amante de su hijo Steven (Al Corley), Ted Dinard (Mark Withers). Parece que Alexis va a hundir a la familia en el fango y realmente lo hará a conciencia. Blake sólo queda en libertad condicional...Al año siguiente se revela la identidad de la intérprete de Alexis: la inglesa Joan Collins, verdadera tabla de salvación de la serie, que a partir de entonces no ocultará su condición de clon de "Dallas". Aunque parezca mentira, se rumoreó durante unos meses que aquella dama con velo negro era...Sophia Loren, y casi lo fue.
- "Flamingo Road": Cutre entre las cutres, lo único destacable de la serie es su ambientación asfixiante en una Florida corrupta hasta la médula. Acaba su primer año con Field Carlyle (Mark Harmon) empujando por accidente a su esposa Constance (Morgan Fairchild, que había sido la 1ª Jenna Wade en "Dallas") desde el el rellano de un primer piso, delante del padre de la víctima y de la amante de Field, Lane Ballou (Cristina Raines).
Recordemos también los clásicos finales de aquel año para la saga Ewing:
- "California": En su primer cliffhanger auténtico, la serie-hermana presentaba el accidente de un coche saboteado que acabaría con la vida de Sid Fairgate (Don Murray) por un asunto de negocios. La Abby de Donna Mills era la víctima por 1ª y última vez, con el rapto de sus hijos por parte de su ex Jeff Cunningham (Barry Jenner)...
- "Dallas": Una mujer no identificada, que resultará ser la cuñada de J.R., Kristin Shepard (Mary Crosby), aparece muerta en la piscina de Southfork, y J.R. y su eterno rival Cliff (Ken Kercheval) se acusan mutuamente. Sue Ellen (Linda Gray) o Pamela (Victoria Principal) también podían haber sido la víctima. J.R. y Sue Ellen acaban de separarse por 1ª vez, y Lucy y Mitch (Leigh McCloskey) también. Afton Cooper (Audrey Landers) traiciona a su amante Cliff por un puñado de dólares, y Donna (Susan Howard) sospecha que su marido Ray (Steve Kanaly) ha usado su dinero en un negocio sin su permiso...
Aquella temporada 1980-81, "Dallas" acabó en primer lugar (véase la información de las audiencias al final de cada capítulo), más por el tirón que supuso el atentado contra J.R. que por la etapa en sí, más bien mediocre. "California" iba afianzándose aunque sólo gracias a la fuerza de Abby como personaje, y de Joan Van Ark y Michele Lee como actrices principales..."Dinastía" obtuvo suficiente audiencia para prolongarse durante 8 años más, pero no así "Flamingo Road", que sólo tuvo otro año de vida, Pero la competición no había hecho más que empezar: "Falcon Crest" sobrevolaba el horizonte...
El suspense final de "Dallas" y "Dinastía" consiste en ocultar la identidad de una mujer; en el primer caso, ¿quién es la mujer ahogada en la piscina de Southfork? Respecto al segundo, se centra no en la identidad, sino en la de su intérprete. Además del paralelismo entre las escenas finales, hay otros: tanto J.R. como Blake son juzgados en el último episodio (el magnate Ewing sometido, en realidad, a una Audiencia del Senado) y, asimismo, los dos petroleros atraviesan una grave crisis matrimonial y viven separados de sus esposas...aunque tiempo habrá para divorciarse, volverse a casar, separarse...
The unexpected success of "Dallas" spins off other shows of the same genre, aired by the rival networks, e.g. "Dynasty" (ABC) and "Flamingo Road" (NBC). CBS overcomes all kind of obstacles to continue producing the show, even its patriarch´s death, Jim Davis (Jock Ewing). In works, there is another supersoap with millionaire winemakers to debut next season.
It was back in spring of 1980 when in USA took place the first breakout of competition between prime-time soaps: all stays in the family because that year there are on only "Dallas" and its brand new spin-off "Knots Landing". While J.R. (Larry Hagman) gets two bullets in his office, down in California, Gary Ewing falls off the wagon again and Val talks him into go with her to Alcoholics Anonymous. "Dallas" is aired on Friday nights and "Knots Landing", on Thursday nights, while CBS's rival networks rack their brains in order to get their audiences back, even through clones of the Texan saga. It will be in that year, also in spring, when occurs the first outbreak of war between the abovementioned new soaps, which reach their first season ending with the following events:
- "Dynasty": The Carrington saga ends its first season with the mysterious arrival of Alexis at the court-rom where Blake Carrington (John Forsythe) was being tried for the murder (deliberate or not, accidental or not) of his son Steven´s (Al Corley) ex-lover Ted Dinard (Mark Withers). It seems that Alexis is going to sink the family into the mud and she will really try it hard. Blake will just be given probation...The next year, they will reveal the identity of Alexis´s performer: English star Joan Collins, the true last resort of the show, which, from then on, will not hide its confition of "Dallas"´s clon anymore. Although it might seem unbelievable, rumors said for months that the woman under the black veil was...Sophia Loren, and it almost became true.
- "Flamingo Road": The tackiest of all, it´s only remarkable for its suffocating atmosphere in a Florida rotten to the core. It ends its freshman year with Field Carlyle (Mark Harmon) accidentally pushing his wife Constance (Morgan Fairchild, who had been the first Jenna Wade on "Dallas") off the staircase balcony, in front of the victim´s father and Field´s lover Lane Ballou (Cristina Raines).
Let´s remember the classic season-enders for the Ewing saga too:
- "Knots Landing": In its first real cliffhanger, the sister series features a sabotaged car accident that will eventually kill off Sid Fairgate (Don Murray) for a business matter. Donna Mills´ Abby becomes the victim for the first and last time, when her children are kidnapped by Jeff Cunningham (Barry Jenner)...
- "Dallas": An unidentified woman, who will turn out to be J.R.´s sister-in-law Kristin Shepard (Mary Crosby), is found dead at the Southfork pool, and J.R. and his arch-rival Cliff (Ken Kercheval) accuse each other. Sue Ellen (Linda Gray) or Pamela (Victoria Principal) might have been the victim as well. J.R. and Sue Ellen have just made apart by first time, and Lucy and Mitch (Leigh McCloskey) too. Afton Cooper (Audrey Landers) double-crosses her lover Cliff for a fistful of dollars while Donna (Susan Howard) suspects that husband Ray (Steve Kanaly) has used her money at her back...
That 1980-81 season, "Dallas" finished at the top (check out the Nielsen ratings below), rather for cashing in on J.R.´s shooting than for the mediocre season. "Knots Landing" was consolidating but only thanks to the appeal of the Abby character, and to Joan Van Ark´s and Michele Lee´s acting chops..."Dynasty" gathered enough viewers to continue for 8 more years, but not "Flamingo Road", which was axed after another season. But the competition had just begun: "Falcon Crest" was flying over the horizon...
The cliffhanger suspense of both "Dallas" and "Dynasty" consists in hidding the identity of a woman; in the former case, who is the woman drown at the Southfork pool? In the latter, it´s focused not in the character´s identity, but in her performer´s. Aside from the parallels between the final scenes, there are others: both J.R. and Blake are tried in the season finale (the Ewing tycoon actually held to a Senate hearing) and both oilmen are also going through a serious marital crisis, separated from their wives...though there will be time for divorcing, re-marrying, separating...

- El Final de Temporada de "Dallas" alcanzó los 32.9 millones y un porcentaje de audiencia del 56%, convirtiéndose así en la serie más vista de la semana y de la temporada televisiva, con una media de 33.4 y 55%, respectivamente, entre un total de 97 programas de TV.
- "California" se colocó en 17º lugar y su episodio final doble fue visto por 20.4 millones de norteamericanos, con un "share" del 34% de audiencia. Clasificación en el ránking general: 33º, con 18.7 y 31%.
- La "Dinastía" de la ABC terminó su temporada en el puesto 23º y, como media, en el 37º, con 18.1 y 37%.
- La "supersoap" de la NBC"Flamingo Road" acabó en 36º lugar. Su 1ª temporada se clasificó en el 57º lugar, con 18.1 y 27%, respectivamente.

EPISODIO II: EL ATAQUE DE LOS CLONES
EPISODE II: ATTACK OF THE CLONES
"Dinastía" y "Falcon Crest" se desmarcan de las demás series rivales de "Dallas". Una, con la nueva protagonista Joan Collins como Alexis. La otra, con un plantel de veteranos que dan fuerza a las historias más flojas. Esta será, sin embargo, la última temporada de "Flamingo Road", y "California", por su parte, también perderá a su patriarca, Sid Fairgate, esta vez sólo en la ficción.
Corría la primavera de 1982. En la TV norteamericana coincidían por 1ª vez cinco "supersoaps". La recién llegada "Falcon Crest". Esta última sustituía el petróleo por los viñedos y al "malo" por una "mala" de la 3ª edad llamada Angela Channing, encarnada a la perfección por Jane Wyman, experta en melodramas y, por aquel entonces, ex mujer del presidente de los EE.UU. Sin embargo, en su 1ª temporada, la serie acaba en anticlímax (es decir, sin suspense real) con el acuerdo "forzoso" entre Angela y su sobrino el santurrón Chase Gioberti (Robert Foxworth) para repartirse legalmente la propiedad.
Mientras tanto, en las demás series...
- "Flamingo Road": La "supersoap" más estrafalaria de la historia termina su andadura de manera tenebrosa, con el misterioso asesinato del personaje de David Selby, Michael Tyrone. Field y Constance se divorcian, y Lane acaba casada con Sam Curtis (John Beck). En la escena final, se ve a Tyrone disfrazado de monje en un monasterio remoto, jurando venganza, presuntamente muerto..."Falcon Crest" volvería a utilizar la trama, al actor e incluso el inserto del monasterio en su 7º final de etapa...
- "Dinastía": La producción de Aaron Spelling presenta a Blake inconsciente a causa de una caída de un caballo y aislado en una montaña, después de una pelea con el Dr. Nicholas Toscanni (James Farentino), que le deja agonizar. En Denver, Fallon (Pamela Sue Martin) y su marido Jeff Colby (John James) temen por la suerte que haya podido correr su bebé, raptado quizá por la inestable Claudia Blaisdel (Pamela Bellwood) haya raptado a su bebé, y Alexis provoca a su prometido Cecil Colby (Lloyd Bochner) un ataque cardiaco involuntariamente, en pleno acto sexual...
- "California": Val descubre por fin la aventura extraconyugal que mantiene su marido con la ambiciosa Abby y lo abandona entre lágrimas, dejando perplejo al pobre Gary, casi recuperado de su alcoholismo...La serie iba ganando terreno discretamente, más gracias al buen hacer de sus actores que a sus guiones o a las apariciones de personajes de "Dallas" como J.R. o Bobby...
- "Dallas": En el momento más bajo de su historia (hasta entonces), nos muestra la degeneración del triángulo J.R.-Sue Ellen-Cliff culminando en el intento de suicidio de este último. Recién divorciada y a punto de volver a casarse con J.R., Sue Ellen prometía echarse atrás si Cliff moría...Al mismo tiempo, Bobby y Pam averiguan que el pequeño Christopher no era hijo de J.R., sino de un amante de esta, Jeff Farraday (Art Hindle). Lucy descubría que estaba embarazada de su secuestrador Roger (Dennis Redfield) y Ellie (Barbara Bel Geddes) aceptaba al fin la muerte de Jock, única trama interesante en los últimos episodios...Con un final tan poco espectacular y aburrido, se entiende que "Dinastía" y "Falcon Crest" aprovecharan esta minicrisis y atrajeran a la audiencia de sus respectivas cadenas. Pero "Dallas" tenía varios ases en la manga, sobre todo el testamento de Jock y la entrada de una ex Chica-Bond y un ex Chico-Flamingo, además del retorno de la incomparable Katherine...
La característica general de la temporada fue el futuro incierto de la protagonista femenina. Al mismo tiempo, se aprecia que las situaciones dramáticas provienen de caídas: tras el impacto de la muerte de Kristin y la parálisis de Constance, sufren accidentes similares Blake y Krystle (a caballo) y el hermano de Angela, cuyo fallecimiento supuso el punto de partida de la serie. Comienzan a aparecer los hijos secretos: los Ewing habían descubierto al suyo un año antes (Ray), los Channing, ese año (Richard), y los Carrington lo presentarían un año después (Adam), y sólo era el principio...
"Dynasty" and "Falcon Crest" stand out among the other rival shows of "Dallas". One of them features new star Joan Collins as Alexis. The other one has a cast of old-timers who improve the weaker plots. However, this will be the last season of "Flamingo Road", and, also, "Knots Landing" will lose its father figure, Sid Fairgate, this time only in fiction.
It was back in spring of 1982. For the first time, five supersoaps were aired in one single TV season. The newcomer "Falcon Crest" replaced oil with vineyards and the villain with an elderly villainess called Angela Channing, played to the hilt by Jane Wyman, an expert in melodramas and, at the time, the ex-wife of then President of USA. However the show finished its first season with an anticlímax (i.e. with no real cliffhanger): the "obligated" agreement between Angela and her goody-goody nephew Chase Gioberti (Robert Foxworth) for sharing their property equally.
Meanwhile, in the other soaps...
- "Flamingo Road": The sloppiest supersoap in history ends its run creepily, with the mysterious murder of David Selby´s character. Field and Constance get divorced, and Lane winds up married to Sam Curtis (John Beck). In the end scene Tyrone is seen in a remote monastery, disguised as a monk and vowing revenge, presumably dead..."Falcon Crest" would re-hash the plot twist, the actor and even the monastery clip in its Season 7 cliffhanger...
- "Dynasty": The Aaron Spelling production features an unconscious Blake isolated in a mountain after falling off his horse. He had previously got into a fight with Dr. Nicholas Toscanni (James Farentino), who leaves him agonizing. Back in Denver, Fallon (Pamela Sue Martin) and her husband Jeff Colby (John James) fear for the life of their baby, maybe kidnapped by unstable Claudia Blaisdel (Pamela Bellwood), and Alexis, unwillingly, causes her fiancé Cecil Colby (Lloyd Bochner) a heart attack during sexual intercourse...
- "Knots Landing": Val finally discovers that her husband is having an affair with greedy Abby and abandons him tearfully, leaving poor Gary ashtonished, despìte he stopped drinking...The series was gaining ground discreetly, thanks more to its actors´ ability or the crossovers from "Dallas"´s J.R. or Bobby...
- "Dallas": At the lowest point of its history (until then), it shows us the deconstruction of the J.R.-Sue Ellen-Cliff triangle, which culminates in the latter´s suicide attempt. Recently divorced and engaged to remarry J.R., Sue Ellen promises to back out if Cliff dies...At the same time, Bobby and Pam find out that Baby Christopher is not J.R.´s and Kristin´s son, but a lover of hers, Jeff Farraday (Art Hindle). Lucy learns that she is pregnant with her kidnapper Roger´s (Dennis Redfield) baby, and Miss Ellie (Barbara Bel Geddes) eventually accepts Jock´s death, the only interesting storyline in the last episodes...With such an unspectacular, boring finale, it´s understandable that "Dynasty" and "Falcon Crest" took advantage of this short crisis and attracted the audience of their respective networks. But "Dallas" had a few aces under the sleeve, especially Jock´s will and the arrivals of an ex-Bond Girl and a Flamingo Boy, as well as the return of incomparable Katherine...
This end-of-season´s common trait was the uncertain future of the female star. Also, dramatic situations seem to be caused by falls: after the impact of Kristin´s death and Constance´s paralysis, similar things happen to both Blake and Krystle (off a horse) and Angela´s brother, whose death was the starting point of the show. Long-lost children begin to show up: the Ewings had found their own one year before (Ray), the Channings find him this year (Richard), and the Carringtons would introduce him one year later (Adam), and that was only the beginning...

- El 4º Final de "Dallas" reunió a 27.9 millones, con un "share" del 36%, convirtiéndose así en la serie más vista de la semana y, una vez más, del año televisivo, con una audiencia media de 28.4 millones y 46%, respectivamente.
- La recién llegada "Falcon Crest" terminó en 9º lugar a pesar de tener final cerrado, logrando reunir a 21.4 millones y un 38% de "share". Clasificación en el ránking general: 14º lugar, con 21.4 y 37%.
- El primer Final de "Dinastía" con Joan Collins se situó como el 2º programa más visto de la semana, y su "cliffhanger" (titulado adecuadamente "The Cliff", "El precipicio" en inglés) logró una audiencia de 22.7 millones y 38% de "share". Posición en el ránking general: 19º lugar, 20.2 y 34%.
- "California" se clasificó en el índice anual en 40º lugar, con 16.9 y 27%.
- La baja audiencia de "Flamingo Road" llevó a la NBC a cancelar la serie, aunque Lorimar mantuvo bajo contrato a algunos de sus actores y pronto pasaron a otras series: Morgan Fairchild protagonizó "Muñecas de papel", estrenada en septiembre de 1984, y ya en la siguiente temporada, apareció en "Falcon Crest". John Beck interpretó un papel similar en "Dallas" poco después, igual que David Selby en "Falcon Crest". Mark Harmon prefirió fichar por las "Historias de hospital" de la NBC, pero Howard Duff esperó un par de años antes de participar de nuevo en un serial, aceptando el papel-bombón de padre pródigo de Greg Sumner en "California". Kevin McCarthy intervino a menudo en producciones de Aaron Spelling, como fue el caso de Barbara Rush, Stella Stevens y Cristina Raines.
- The fourth "Dallas" Finale reached a rating of 27.9 and a share of 36% of viewers, thus becoming the most watched show of the week, and topped (again) the seasonal ranking with an average of 28.4 and 46%, respectively.

John Beck was hired to play a similar role on "Dallas" right away, just like David Selby on "Falcon Crest". Mark Harmon opted for NBC´s hospital drama "St. Elsewhere", but Howard Duff waited for a couple of years to commit to a soap again, in the juicy role of Greg Sumner´s long-lost father on "Knots Landing". Kevin McCarthy was often seen in the Aaron Spelling productions, as did Barbara Rush, Stella Stevens and Cristina Raines.
1982-83:
EPISODIO III: EL IMPERIO EWING CONTRAATACA
EPISODE III: THE EWING EMPIRE STRIKES BACK
La moda lujosa de vestidos con grandes hombreras y toque del glamour del antiguo Hollywood se impone gracias al diseñador Nolan Miller, que viste a las actrices de "Dinastía". Eso no impide que, al final, ellas se líen a puñetazos en el estanque de la mansión...Mientras, "California" atrae a gran público joven con el personaje de Lisa Hartman, y "Falcon Crest" juega a Agatha Christie con una trama de msterio que abarca toda la temporada.
Corría la primavera de 1983. Casi todos los personajes de los seriales están a punto de morir quemados en uno u otro sentido...Los guionistas no reparan en gastos ni en escrúpulos para conseguir los primeros puestos en los índices de audiencia. En los respectivos universos, esto era lo que ocurría:
- "Dinastía": Afianzada Joan Collins en su papel de la malvada Alexis (ahora apellidada Colby), la serie termina su año con el enfrentamiento en dos tiempos entre ella y su rival, la blanda Krystle: el físico tiene lugar poco antes del último episodio, con una pelea en el estanque de la "Carrington Manor", escenario de la suprema humillación de la ex Jennings a manos de Alexis. Luego, en el cliffhanger, esta intenta comprarla para que deje la ciudad y, al final, ambas se quedan encerradas en una cabaña en llamas, incendiada por un misterioso personaje...que luego resultará ser el mayordomo Joseph (Lee Bergere). Además, la hija de este, Kirby (Kathleen Beller), ya casada con Jeff, descubre que está embarazada de su violador, Adam Carrington (Gordon Thomson), y Blake amenaza a su hijo Steven (ahora con la cara de Jack Coleman), con quitarle la custodia del bebé de este y la infame Sammy Jo (Heather Locklear, aún lejos de "Melrose Place"...).
- "Falcon Crest": Los guionistas de la serie se apartan del modelo "Dallas" y proceden a "inspirarse" en las novelas de Agatha Christie con la misteriosa muerte de Carlo Agretti (Carlos Romero), el padre de Melissa (Ana-Alicia). En la última escena de la etapa, reunidos todos los miembros de la familia, incluida la estrella invitada Lana Turner como Jacqueline, un forastero acusa al asesino...que, sorprendentemente resulta ser Julia Cumson (Abby Dalton), la hija mayor de Angela. Pero ella no sólo admite sus maldades sino que apunta su arma hacia su odiado Chase para acabar con él...Se ve un forcejeo y se oyen varios disparos, y luego un entierro. ¿Quién ha muerto? O dicho de otra forma...¿A quién se le ha rescindido el contrato por orden de Jane Wyman, y por lo tanto es completamente prescindible...? Uno de los mayores logros de "Falcon Crest" en cuestión de finales...
- "California": La serie-hermana de "Dallas" ya se ha entregado de lleno al melodrama y pronto abandonará también la clase media al recibir Gary su parte de la herencia de Jock. En su 4º final de etapa, Karen descubre que su hija Diana (Claudia Lonow) se ha fugado con su futuro marido y presunto asesino Chip (Michael Sabatino). Abandonada por su esposo, Laura (Constance McCashin) acusa a este de haber matado a Ciji (Lisa Hartman), mientras Gary languidece en prisión acusado del crimen, víctima también de su nueva esposa Abby. (claro), el novio de Lucy y primo de Ray, Mickey (Timothy Patrick Murphy), convertido en un vegetal a causa de un accidente provocado, y a Katherine (Morgan Brittany), se le cae la baba sólo de pensar en Bobby...¿Por qué nadie previno a la pobre contra la malvada y ortopédica Jenna Wade, una chica que recuerda a la viuda de Elvis, Priscilla Presley...?
Una vez desaparecida "Flamingo Road", la rivalidad se acentúa entre las supervivientes...Este año la batalla la gana una vez más "Dallas", aunque "Dinastía" estuvo cerca, y "Falcon Crest" ya prepara suculentos cheques para los invitados de la siguiente temporada, un actor con Oscar, una enemiga del Superman Reeve, y un "sex symbol" que venía de "Dallas"...
Numerosos personajes ven peligrar su vida, especialmente a causa de incendios. Ante tanto fuego descontrolado, los guionistas de "Falcon Crest" aparecen como los más ingeniosos: por primera vez, se muestra a la asesina, pero no a la víctima, una de las cuales perderá la vida. Coincidencia con "Dinastía": el "cliffhanger" lo provoca una persona mentalmente trastornada, porque, como se verá más tarde, el asesino frustrado de las dos señoras Carrington es el mayordomo.
Mientras, en "Falcon Crest" se acumulan los tópicos: mujeres que descubren que sus maridos no desean reconciliarse (Julia), enigmáticos hombres (o mujeres) de negocios que adoptan una segunda personalidad (Jacqueline) y jovencitas (Vickie, interpretada por Jamie Rose) que sorprenden a sus esposos en la cama con otra mujer. Tres años después, el primer "cliffhanger" de "Los Colby" plagiaría esto último, además del descubrimiento de una recién casada de que ha quedado embarazada de una violación previa a la boda (Kirby). En "Dallas", la tragedia se desencadena con un accidente de coche de Sue Ellen, como en la 1ª etapa. Resumen de catástrofes: dos peleas (una entre hombres y otra entre mujeres), varios incendios y una serie de disparos que elevó aquel año el nivel de violencia en TV, y también el de audiencia...
The luxurious fashion of big shoulderpads and a touch of old Hollywood glamour dominates thanks to designer Nolan Miller, who dresses up the "Dynasty" stars. This doesn´t prevent them from having a catfight in the manor pond. Meanwhile "Knots Landing" appeals younger audiences with Lisa Hartman´s role and "Falcon Crest" plays Agatha Christie with a storyline as long as the season itself.
It was back in spring of 1983. Almost all the supersoap characters are about to die burnt in one sense or another...Writers spare no expense or scruple to reach the top places in the ratings. This is what happens in their respective universes:
- "Dynasty": Established Joan Collins in her role of wicked Alexis (now using the last name of Colby), the show ends its season with a two-round confrontation between her and her rival, soft Krystle: the physical one takes place previously to the Season Finale, with a catfight at the lilypond of the Carrington Manor, setting of the supreme humiliation of the ex-Mrs. Jennings at Alexis´s hands. After that, the cliffhanger features her trying to buy Krystle off to make her leave the town. At last, both women get locked up inside a burning cabin, set on fire by a mysterious character...who will turn out to be the majordomo Joseph (Lee Bergere). Besides, his daughter Kirby (Kathleen Beller), now Jeff´s wife, learns she is pregnant with his rapist Adam Carrington´s (Gordon Thomson) baby, and Blake threatens his son Steven (who looks like Jack Coleman) with getting the custody of his and infamous Sammy Jo´s (Heather Locklear, still far from "Melrose Place"...) baby.
- "Falcon Crest": The series´ writers let aside the "Dallas" pattern and proceed to get their "inspiration" in Agatha Christie´s novels, regarding the enigmatic murder of Carlo Agretti (Carlos Romero), Melissa´s (Ana-Alicia) father. In the cliffhanger scene, gathered all the family members, including Special Guest Star Lana Turner as Jacqueline, an outsider accuses the murderer...who, shockingly, is Julia Cumson (Abby Dalton), Angela´s older daughter. But she doesn´t only admit her misdeeds but also points her gun at her much-hated Chase to kill him...A fight for a gun is barely seen and several shots are heard, and then a burial. Who is dead? Or said otherwise...whose contract has been terminated by demand of Jane Wyman so he/she was totally expendable...? One of the most successful cliffhangers of "Falcon Crest" ...
- "Knots Landing": The "Dallas" spin-off has fully turned into a melodrama and soon will also leave the middle-classs when Gary gets his share of Jock´s inheritance. In its fourth season-ender, Karen finds out that her daughter Diana (Claudia Lonow) has eloped with the alleged murderer Chip (Michael Sabatino). Abandoned by her husband, Laura (Constance McCashin) blames him for killing Ciji (Lisa Hartman), while Gary languishes in jail, accused of the crime and victim of his new wife Abby. At the same time Ginger (Kim Lankford) and Kenny Ward (James Houghton) finally quit the show after four years of dull filler arguments...
- "Dallas": The Big Sister (so to say) of Soap Land presents "the End of the Ewing World" (version 1.0): Bobby and Pam on the verge of divorce, Southfork on fire because of a fight between J.R. and Ray, Sue Ellen off the wagon again because of J.R. (who else´s?), Lucy´s boyfriend and Ray´s cousin Mickey (Timothy Patrick Murphy), turned into a vegetable due to a hit-and-run car crash, and Katherine (Morgan Brittany) drooling over Bobby...Why didn´t anyone warn poor darling against mean, wooden Jenna Wade, a girl who looked very much like Elvis´s widow Priscilla Presley...?
With "Flamingo Road" gone and forgotten, the rivalry gets bigger and bigger between the surviving soaps...This year the battle is won, once again, by "Dallas", though "Dynasty" is coming closer, and "Falcon Crest" is already writing big checks for next season´s guest stars: an Oscar winner, an enemy of Reeve´s Superman, and a sex symbol who came from "Dallas" ...
A lot of characters see their lives endangered, especially because of fires. With all those uncontrolled flames, the "Falcon Crest" writers seem to be the wittiest: for the first time the killer is shown but not the victims, one of which will die. Coincidence with "Dynasty": the cliffhanger tragedy is caused by a mentally disturbed person because, as we will see later on, the frustrated killer of both Mrs. Carrington is the majordomo.
Meanwhile, on "Falcon Crest" clichés are used and abused: women who discover that their husbands don´t want to reconcile (Julia), enigmatic business men (or women) who adopt a second personality (Jacqueline) and young women (Vickie, played by Jamie Rose) who catch their men in bed with another woman. Three years later, the first cliffhanger of "The Colbys" will rehash the latter twist, aside from another one: a new bride finds out she is expecting a baby from a man who raped her prior to the wedding (Kirby). On "Dallas", the tragedy is triggered by Sue Ellen´s car accident, like in Season 1. Disaster recap: two fights (one between men and another between women), several fires and a number of shootings that increased the TV violence level that year, as much as the audience ratings...

En plena efervescencia del serial de lujo, todas las series pugnan por los primeros puestos, incluso la más modesta "California" que, desde el año anterior, va en pleno ascenso, en parte gracias a su malvada oficial, Abby. Los productores contratan a estrellas famosas como Priscilla Presley, Christopher Atkins y Alexis Smith en "Dallas", Helmut Berger en "Dinastía" y Cliff Robertson en "Falcon Crest".
Corría la primavera de 1984. La rivalidad entre los seriales llega a uno de sus puntos álgidos. Para superar a la serie tejana, los productores del Lado Oscuro pactan con estrellas a punto de extinguirse a las que ofrecen el secreto de la eterna juventud, a través de operaciones de cirugía plástica y modelitos de Nolan Miller. La amenaza continúa...
- "Dinastía": En casa de los Carrington, empieza la desbandada: después de Al Corley, Pamela Sue Martin rescinde su contrato y acaba la etapa con un misterioso accidente de coche de su personaje Fallon, al que sólo se ve gritar, antes de chocar contra un camión. Este final inspiraría evidentemente a los guionistas de "Dallas" para la desaparición de Pam. Otras tramas de final de etapa serían el arresto de Alexis como presunta asesina de su ex Mark Jennings (Geoffrey Scott), la partida de Kirby tras su divorcio de Jeff y la llegada de la glamurosa Dominique Devereaux (Diahann Carroll), único personaje protagonista de raza negra en la historia de los seriales, junto con el Frank Williams de "California", interpretado por Larry Riley.
- "Falcon Crest": Como única manera de renovarse o morir, la serie llevaba a casi todos sus personajes al borde de la muerte para rescindir contratos y eliminar a los que no daban más de si, como el abogado Phillip Erickson (Mel Ferrer), el primo de Chase, Michael Ranson (Cliff Robertson) o la mujer de Cole (William R. Moses), Linda (Mary Kate McGeehan), todos ellos aburridos y sin fundamento. Para ello, los metieron en un avión y lo estrellaron..¡cerca de Denver...! Hasta al pequeño hijo de Melissa (el que se parecía a Chao-Li) viajaba en él...(¡sádicos!).
- "California": En uno de sus mejores y más embrollados "cliffhangers", la serie presentó el atentado contra Gary, que acababa con Karen como víctima por error...Abby lo presenciaba, sin poder hacer nada, prisionera del mafioso St. Claire (Joseph Chapman), mientras Laura rompía su compromiso con Greg (William Devane) gracias a los esfuerzos de Abby. Los guionistas rozaban el delirio pero siempre volvían a la presunta cotidianeidad de la calle sin salida californiana, una mera coartada para cometer los mismos delitos que las otras series, pero con mejor gusto...
- "Dallas": Los Ewing acaban su 6º año reciclando el disparo contra J.R.: esta vez la víctima es Bobby, a punto de casarse con Jenna, y separado de Pam con una carta envenenada por la pérfida Katherine. Ellie y Clayton (Howard Keel) se casan por fin tras sobrevivir a la hermana psicópata de este, Jessica Montford (genial Alexis Smith). Pam se marcha de Dallas con su hijo tras perder al presunto suicida Mark en un accidente de aviación. Otros sospechosos del atentado son Cliff arruinado una vez más por J.R., sus enemigos Vaughn Leland (Dennis Patrick) y Edgar Randolph (Martin E. Brooks); Sue Ellen, chantajeada por J.R. al descubrir este su breve aventura con Peter Richards (Christopher Atkins), y otros con menos posibilidades, pero tan hartos de J.R. como los demás, como Afton, Holly (Lois Chiles) o Katherine. La pregunta es...¿realmente alguien dudó quién disparó contra Bobby...?
Este fue el último año en que "Dallas" reinó en el final de temporada. En la siguiente, le superaría por décimas "Dinastía". Pero la serie ya estaba tocada aunque no hundida: en ese mismo episodio final, Barbara Bel Geddes se despedía de su personaje por motivos de salud, planteando un dilema a los productores: ¿Qué hacer con Ellie: atarla o cambiarle la cara...? Para contrarrestar los efectos negativos de la situación, Lorimar renovó la imagen de la serie con un nuevo director artístico y un reputado diseñador de vestuario. Pero, ¿bastaría con eso?
El año siguiente, "Dinastía" contrataría a un galán del Hollywood dorado y a la reina de la lágrima de los 70 , y "Falcon Crest", a una gran diva italiana, a una futura nominada al Oscar, y a un miembro del reparto de la magistral "Eva al desnudo", mientras "California" rescataría del retiro a la estrella apodada una vez "el animal más bello del mundo"...¿Pero quién sería la nueva Ellie...?
Esta temporada, la moda son las catástrofes aéreas: en "Dallas", una de ellas acaba con la vida de Mark; en "Falcon Crest", se supone que toda la familia puede morir menos Cole y Melissa, y en las demás series, se llevan a cabo los "falsos asesinatos" de personajes como Fallon. La Julia de "Falcon Crest" muere en un incendio accidental similar al de Southfork, como apuntándose a la moda de sus rivales, con un año de retraso. En "Dinastía", es encarcelado el personaje maligno tras verse J.R. entre rejas (cubanas) la temporada anterior, y, por otro lado, se marcha la ex esposa del bueno antes de contraer segundas nupcias (Pam y Fallon). En cambio, las matriarcas Ellie y Angela se casan por fin con sus eternos pretendientes y la ruina económica amenaza a Cliff y Blake.
Los productores bautizan a sus máximas estrellas (Atkins y Berger) con el nombre de Peter; en "Dinastía", aparece un familiar secreto que encabezará las filas de parientes olvidados: el año siguiente, los Ewing reciben a sus primos Jamie y Jack, y los Channing a su tía de Italia, Francesca (Gina Lollobrigida). Y mientras, en "Falcon Crest", una de las secundarias recuerda de repente que tiene un ex marido que afirma no ser ex (como Pam), en "Dinastía" el ex de Alexis y Krystle muere “en circunstancias misteriosas”...Se avecina un largo y tormentoso proceso.

Producers hire well-known stars like Priscilla Presley, Christopher Atkins and Alexis Smith on "Dallas", Helmut Berger on "Dynasty" and Cliff Robertson on "Falcon Crest".
It was back in spring of 1984. The rivalry between the supersoaps reaches one of its highest points. In order to beat the Texan saga, the producers of the Dark Side pact with fading stars by offering them the secret of eternal youth, through plastic surgery and Nolan Miller designs. The menace continues...
- "Dynasty": At the Carringtons´, the cast keeps leaving in disbandment: after Al Corley, Pamela Sue Martin terminates her contract and the season ends with her character having a mysterious car accident, though we only see her screaming before colliding with a truck off-screen. This cliffhanger will obviously inspire the"Dallas" writers for Pam´s disappearance. Other season-ending plots lead to Alexis being arrested as alleged murderer of her ex Mark Jennings (Geoffrey Scott), to Kirby leaving Denver after divorcing Jeff and to glamorous Dominique Devereaux (Diahann Carroll) arriving, being the only black leading actor in the supersoaps' history, along with "Knots Landing"´s Frank Williams, played by Larry Riley.
- "Falcon Crest": As its only way to recycle or die, the soap puts most of its cast on the verge of death to write off all those who have already given the best of themselves, like lawyer Phillip Erickson (Mel Ferrer), Chase´s cousin Michael Ranson (Cliff Robertson) or Cole´s (William R. Moses) wife Linda (Mary Kate McGeehan), all of them boring and uninteresting. Therefore they get the whole bunch into a plane and have it crashed...near Denver no less...! Even Melissa´s little son (the one who looked like Chao-Li) is in it... (how sadistic from them!)
- "Knots Landing": In one of its best, most entangled cliffhangers, the show features the murder attempt against Gary which winds up with Karen being shot by mistake...and Abby as a helpless witness and hostage of mob St. Claire (Joseph Chapman), while Laura breaks off her engagement to Greg (William Devane) because of Abby´s misdeeds. The writers push the limits but they always return to the alleged everyday routine of the Californian cul-de-sac, a mere license to commit the same crimes than the other soaps, but with real gusto...
- "Dallas": The Ewings finish their sixth year recycling Who Shot J.R.: this time the victim is Bobby, engaged to marry Jenna, and separated from Pam through a letter poisoned by wicked Katherine. Miss Ellie and Clayton (Howard Keel) finally tie the knot after surviving his psycho sister Jessica Montford (a wonderful Alexis Smith). Pam leaves Dallas with her son after losing her presumably suicidal fiancé Mark in a plane accident. Other suspects of the shooting are Cliff, ruined by J.R. again, his enemies Vaughn Leland (Dennis Patrick) and Edgar Randolph (Martin E. Brooks); Sue Ellen, blackmailed by J.R. after he found out her brief affair with Peter Richards (Christopher Atkins), and others less likely but so fed up with J.R. as the rest, like Afton, Holly (Lois Chiles) or Katherine. The big question is...did anybody really doubt who shot Bobby...?
This is the last year of "Dallas"´s season-ending reign. The next year, it will be beaten by "Dynasty" by a tenth. But the show is already hit but not sunk: in this season finale, Barbara Bel Geddes says goodbye to her character for health reasons, putting the producers in a quandary: What should they do with Miss Ellie, killer her or change her face...? In order to counteract the negative effects of the situation, Lorimar updates the show´s look with a new Art Director and a prestigious Costume Designer. But is this enough?
The following year, "Dynasty" will hire a leading man of the Golden Hollywood, and a queen of the tearjerkers in the 70´s; "Falcon Crest", a big Italian diva, future Oscar nominee, and a distinguished member of the cast of masterful "All About Eve", while "Knots Landing" will rescue wonderful from retirement a star formerly known as "the World´s most Beautiful Animal"...but who will be the new Miss Ellie...?
This season, aerial disasters are trendy: on "Dallas", one of them ends Mark´s life; on "Falcon Crest", the whole family minus Cole and Melissa might die, and the other supersoaps feature the "presumed murders" of such major characters as Fallon. "Falcon Crest"´s Julia is killed in an accidental fire similar to Southfork´s, thus joining their rivals´ trend one year later. On "Dynasty", the villain is jailed after J.R. was behind (Cuban) bars last year. On the other side, the good guy´s ex-wife leaves before his new wedding (Pam and Fallon). However, matriarchs Ellie and Angela marry their longtime suitors, and financial bankrupt looms over Cliff and Blake. Producers baptize their Special Guest Stars (Atkins and Berger) as Peter; on "Dynasty", a secret relative will head the lines of long-lost kins: the next year, the Ewings will receive their cousins Jamie and Jack, and the Channings, their aunt from Italy. Meanwhile, on "Falcon Crest", one of the minor characters gets an unexpected call from an ex-husband who assures not to be an ex (like Pam´s), on "Dynasty", Alexis´s ex-lover and Krystle´s ex-husband dies “in mysterious circumstances”...A long, stormy trial is coming.
