JIM DAVIS

Nacido el 26 de agosto de 1909 en EDGERTON, MISSOURI, cursó sus estudios en DEARBON y después en el WILLIAM JEWELL COLLEGE, en LIBERTY, MONTANA. Durante sus años escolares, jamás pensó en ser actor. Al finalizar sus estudios, aceptó un empleo como montador de la gran tienda ambulante de un circo. Luego fue vendedor de una compañía de petróleo, llevándole una de sus promociones a L.A. Durante un año, recibió clases de arte dramático, fue a un gimnasio para ponerse en plena forma física, y después consiguió un agente artístico.

JIM se especializó en películas policíacas donde sólo tenía que decir una frase. Se dedicó también a vender bienes inmobiliarios, neveras y otras cosas. Pasados estos años, intentó construir una sólida carrera fuera de los tipos de galán duro, con un estilo de actuar directo y personal. De hecho, insistía en que, durante todos aquellos años, no había hecho más que interpretarse a sí mismo.

Born on August 26, 1909, in EDGERTON, MISSOURI, he went to school in DEARBON and then at WILLIAM JEWELL COLLEGE, in LIBERTY, MONTANA. During his school years he never thought about being an actor. Atfer graduation he accepted a job mounting the big tent of a circus. After that he worked as a salesman for an oil company, and one of his promotions led him to L.A. He took Drama lessons for a year, went to a gym to get in good shape and then hired an agent.

JIM was specialized in cop movies with only one line for him to say. He also sold real estate properties, fridges and other things. After these years, he tried to build a strong career apart from the tough guy types, with a direct, personal way of acting. In fact, he insisted that, all those years, he had just been playing himself.

Hasta la fecha de su muerte llegó a aparecer en más de 150 películas (incluyendo WINTER MEETING (B. Windust), coprotagonizada por BETTE DAVIS, RÍO DE SANGRE, EL DORADO (H. Hawks) y LLEGA UN JINETE LIBRE Y SALVAJE (A. J. Until his death, he appeared in over 150 films (including B. Windust´s WINTER MEETING co-starring BETTE DAVIS, H. Hawks´ THE BIG SKY and EL DORADO, and A. J. Pakula´s COMES A HORSEMAN with JANE FONDA), and on 300 TV shows, including the series BONANZA, GUNSMOKE, RAWHIDE, THE HIGH CHAPARRAL, PERRY MASON and KUNG-FU, not to mention his ad works.

En 1949 se casó con BLANCHE, una de las nadadoras del equipo de Esther Williams, y su única hija TARA murió en un accidente automovilístico, a principios de los 60. El 26 de abril de 1981 fallecía JIM DAVIS, a causa de un tumor cerebral, poco después de terminar el rodaje de los últimos episodios de DALLAS en que intervino. Sin embargo, su personaje en la serie, el patriarca JOCK EWING, permanecería con vida al iniciarse la siguiente temporada.

En el capítulo nº 89, JOCK desapareció definitivamente de escena como consecuencia de un accidente de aviación. Una semana después, los tres hijos del anciano verificaban su muerte. En la última escena de aquel episodio, LARRY HAGMAN levantaba la vista hacia el cielo y sonreía, congelándose ahí su imagen. Después de este gesto cómplice, aparecía en pantalla el retrato de JOCK y, debajo, el nombre del actor y dos fechas: 1909-1981. Este fue el emocionado homenaje del equipo de producción a uno de los actores más creíbles y naturales que pasaron por DALLAS. “Aún le veo todos los días - reveló hace poco LARRY HAGMAN - lo primero que veo cuando entro en casa es el viejo cuadro de JIM DAVIS que solía presidir la sala de estar de SOUTHFORK.”

In 1949 he married BLANCHE, member of the Esther Williams´ swimming team, and their only daughter TARA was killed in a car accident at early 60´s. On April 26, 1981, JIM DAVIS died of a brain tumor, not long after shooting his last DALLAS episodes. However, his character on the show, patriarch JOCK EWING, remained alive at the beginning of the next season. On episode # 89, JOCK definitely exited the show in an air accident. One week later, his three sons verified his death.

In the very last scene of that episode, LARRY HAGMAN looked up to heaven and smiled, just before the freeze frame. After this ambivalent gesture, a portrait of JOCK appeared onscreen and, above, his name and 2 dates: 1909-1981. This was the touching tribute of the production crew to one of the most believable actors who ever played on DALLAS.
