Unos 5 años antes (en el final de la serie en 1991), el implacable pero irresistible J.R. Ewing perdió el vasto negocio familiar, la Ewing Oil, a manos de su archienemigo Cliff Barnes. Trastornado y humillado, J.R. se enfrentó con el mismo diablo y disparó con su pistola...Ahora, averiguamos que J.R. no cometió suicidio. Está muy vivo y planea recuperar su poder. El hermano menor de J.R., el decente Bobby Ewing, ha desarrollado una cariñosa relación con su hijo de 18 años, Christopher, que ha heredado la honradez de Bobby.

Bobby está solo, desde luego, desde la muerte de su amada esposa April, y esa soledad aumenta ante el vacío Southfork, el gran rancho que solía habitar la tumultuosa y numerosa familia Ewing. Ahora que J.R. se ha exiliado a algún lugar de Europa, todo está muy tranquilo, demasiado, y por eso Bobby ha puesto a la venta el hogar de su familia...

Mientras, Cliff tiene todo lo que ha deseado, o eso creía. Ahora posee la Ewing Oil mientras el canalla J.R. está arruinado, divorciado de Sue Ellen y alejado de su hijo John Ross. Pero Cliff se ha dado cuenta de que su obsesiva rivalidad con J.R. le ha hecho perder al amor de su vida, Afton, y a la hija de ambos, Pamela, a quien ni siquiera conoce. Decidido a recuperar su vida y familia, ahora que J.R. ya no supone una amenaza, Cliff intenta vender la Ewing Oil al otro enemigo de J.R., Carter McKay, jefe de la Weststar Oil. Si Bobby vende Southfork y la Ewing Oil es absorbida pronto por la Weststar, el legado de J.R. llegará a su final.

Pero como dice el título, J.R. ha regresado: el hombre de la sonrisa infame no cejará hasta que gane. Y ha decidido recuperar la Ewing Oil y restablecer su antiguo poder como el patriarca del imperio Ewing. La 1ª misión destructora de J.R. será una visita a la Ewing Oil, donde le dice al idiota de Cliff que se propone arrebatarle de nuevo la compañía. Con una falsa valentía, Cliff se burla de sus amenazas...A continuación, J.R. se reúne con la sexy y retorcida abogada Anita Smithfield, sobrina del eterno abogado de la familia Ewing, Harv. En un estilo típico de J.R., este combina el negocio con el placer y continúa con ella una aventura que empezaron en París. Tal vez J.R. esté arruinado, pero no su hijo. Anita muestra a J.R. un codicilo secreto del testamento del padre de J.R.

En él, deja a su nieto John Ross las acciones de una empresa informática, valorada ahora en 500 millones de dólares. Sólo hay un problema: al conocer bien a su intrigante hijo, el padre de J.R. especificó que la herencia de John Ross no se revelase hasta la muerte de J.R. Ya que sólo él está enterado de la existencia de esa fortuna, ¿qué hay de malo en “tomarla prestada” de su hijo y venderla para comprar acciones de la Weststar, y así poder controlar la empresa y recuperar la Ewing Oil? Pero, ¿cómo lo llevará a cabo?

Con ayuda de Anita y los demás funcionarios que J.R. corrompió durante su reinado, J.R. finge su propia muerte en un feroz accidente automovilístico. Unos afectados Sue Ellen y su hijo John Ross regresan a Southfork para asistir al funeral. Ahora que J.R. está “muerto”, Sue Ellen, separada de su 2º marido, se da cuenta de que está destinada a querer siempre a J.R. También asiste al funeral en su memoria Julia Cunningham, una conocida de Bobby; la joven Pamela, que es tímidamente cortejada por Chris y, por supuesto, un aliviado Cliff, cuyos modales tranquilos y festivos se convierten pronto en horror al aparecer J.R. vivo y sonriente.

Contento de ver la reacción de Sue Ellen ante su “muerte”, J.R. jura que sólo le importa ahora reunir a la familia. Pero Sue Ellen aún tiene sus dudas: ¿de verdad puede confiar en él? Y le preocupa que J.R. influya en John Ross, que ha heredado la rapacidad de su padre. Ahora J.R. tiene casi todo lo que quiere. Sue Ellen y John Ross han vuelto y Bobby ya no venderá Southfork. En cuanto a Cliff, J.R. concibe su plan más retorcido, que le obligará a elegir entre su familia perdida y la Ewing Oil. Lo único que J.R. necesita es que todos los involuntarios actores interpreten su papel convincentemente, en esta su peor conspiración.

Estrenada el 15 de noviembre de 1996, "Dallas: El regreso de J.R." está dedicada a la memoria de Leonard Katzman, el productor ejecutivo y director del telefilme, fallecido poco antes. Lee Rich y Rich Heller fueron los co-productores y el guión fue escrito por Katzman y Arthur Bernard Lewis, a partir de una historia de este último. LARRY HAGMAN, co-productor ejecutivo junto a PATRICK DUFFY, obtuvo el Premio Lone Star al mejor actor de TV por su interpretación en este telefilme.

About 5 years before (at the series end in 1991), unstoppable but irresistible J.R. Ewing lost the vast family business, Ewing Oil, at hands of his arch-enemy Cliff Barnes. Disturbed and humiliated, J.R. faced the very Devil and shot his pistol...Now, we find out that J.R. did not commit suicide. He is well and alive and planning to get his power back. J.R.´s youngest brother, decent Bobby Ewing, has developed a caring relationship with his 18-year-old son, Christopher, who inherited Bobby´s honesty.

Bobby is alone, indeed, since the death of his loved wife April, and this loneliness is increasing among the empty Southfork, the big ranch that used to be inhabited by tumultuous and numerous Ewing family. Now that J.R. exiled himself to somewhere in Europe, all is really quiet, too quiet, therefore Bobby has put his family´s home for sale...

Meanwhile, Cliff has all he has always wanted, or so he thought. Now he owns Ewing Oil while that bastard J.R. is ruined, divorced from Sue Ellen and estranged from his son John Ross. But Cliff has realized that his obsessive rivalry with J.R. made him lose the love of his life, Afton, and their daughter Pamela Rebecca, whom he doesn´t even know. Determined to regain his life and family, now that J.R. is not a menace anymore, Cliff tries to sell Ewing Oil to another of J.R.´s enemies, Carter McKay, CEO of Weststar Oil. If Bobby sells Southfork and Ewing Oil is absorbed soon by Weststar, J.R.´s legacy will come to an end.

But as the title goes, J.R. has returned: the man with the infamous smile will not give up until he becomes the winner. And he has decided to get Ewing Oil back and re-establish his old power as the patriarch of the Ewing Empire. J.R.´s first destructing mission will be a visit to Ewing Oil, where he tells idiot Cliff that he intends to take him his company back. Feeling falsely bold, Cliff makes fun of his menaces...After that, J.R. meets sexy, twisted lawyer Anita Smithfield, a niece of the Ewings´ eternal lawyer, Harv. Very J.R.-style, he combines business with pleasure and resumes an affair he started with her up in Paris. Maybe J.R. is down, but not his son. Anita shows J.R. a secret codicil to J.R.´s father´s testament.

In it, he leaves to grandson John Ross the shares of a computing company, now worth 500 million dollars. There is only one problem: as he knew his scheming son very well, J.R.´s daddy specified that John Ross´s inheritance would not be revealed until J.R.´s death. Since only he is aware of the existence of this fortune, what´s wrong with “borrowing it” from his son and selling it to buy stock from Weststar, so he can control the company and get Ewing Oil back? But, how is going to carry it out?

With the help of Anita and all the rest of civil servants corrupted by J.R. during his reign, J.R. fakes his own death in a violent car accident. Overwhelmed Sue Ellen and son John Ross return to Southfork to attend the funeral. Now that J.R. is “dead”, Sue Ellen, separated from her second husband, realizes that she is doomed to love J.R. forever. Also attending the memorial services are Julia Cunningham, a girlfriend of Bobby´s; a young Pamela, shyly courted by Chris and, of course, a relieved Cliff, whose quiet, festive manners soon become horror when J.R. shows up alive and smiling.

Glad to see Sue Ellen´s reaction to his “death”, J.R. swears that he only cares about reuniting the family. But Sue Ellen still hesitates: can she really trust him? And she is worried about how J.R. can influence on John Ross, who inherited his father´s rapacity. Now J.R. has almost all that he wants. Sue Ellen and John Ross have returned and Bobby is not selling Southfork anymore. About Cliff, J.R. conceives his most devious plan, to make him decide between his long-lost family and Ewing Oil. The only thing that J.R. needs is all the unwilling actors to play their parts convincingly, in his worst ever ploy.

Premiered on November 15, 1996, "Dallas: J.R.´s Returns" is dedicated to the memory of Leonard Katzman, executive producer and director of the sequel, deceased briefly after. Lee Rich and Rich Heller also co-executive produced and the screenplay was written by Katzman and Arthur Bernard Lewis, from a story by the latter. LARRY HAGMAN, co-executive producer side by side with PATRICK DUFFY, achieved the Lone Star Award as best TV actor for his portrayal in this telemovie.

Una pesadilla familiar (para los espectadores) que muestra a Bobby y Sue Ellen besándose en la ducha, proporciona al viejo J.R. una buena idea para crear problemas entre los actuales propietarios de la Ewing Oil, su hermano Bobby y su ex mujer Sue Ellen. Ahora J.R. dirige la WestStar Oil pero sigue ansiando controlar su antigua empresa. Sue Ellen está decidida a contratar a Carter McKay para la Ewing Oil pero Bobby no está de acuerdo. Carter ha encontrado un gran pozo de petróleo bajo las tierras de Southfork propiedad de Ray Krebbs. J.R. intenta que Ray interfiera en la Ewing Oil. Aún casado con Jenna, Ray viaja a Dallas en busca de ayuda financiera para sus negocios europeos. De repente, aparece en una pelea en un bar cuando Bobby tiene que defenderse a sí mismo y a Sue Ellen de unos vaqueros.

Finalmente, Ellington resulta ser la persona que atentó contra J.R., y, después de secuestrar a Sue Ellen y forecejear con Bobby y Ray, es detenido. Bobby y Jennifer deciden irse de vacaciones juntos, Ray obtiene de Carter el mejor precio por sus tierras y regresa a Suiza con Jenna y sus hijos, y Sue Ellen le da un puñetazo a J.R. por complicar tanto su vida.

"Dallas: La guerra de los Ewing" fue estrenada el 24 de abril de 1998, poco más de 20 años después del debut de la serie en la CBS. Ya que Leonard Katzman había fallecido antes de la emisión de la secuela previa, Michael Preece fue contratado para dirigirla y Hagman y Duffy, además de protagonizarla, fueron acreditados como "productores ejecutivos" junto con Richard M. Heller. También se recuperaron de "ERDJR", Linda Gray, George Kennedy, Tracy Scoggins y John Hoge.

Supuso una agradable sorpresa la presencia de Steve Kanaly retomando su papel de Ray Krebbs, aunque Kercheval, Landers, Katz y Rennard no fueron incluidos esta vez en el proyecto. Centrado ahora en el triángulo de negocios J.R.-Sue Ellen-Bobby, el interés amoroso de éste fue Michelle Johnson, mucho más joven que Duffy, y la película fue filmada en Southfork de principio a fin por primera vez (es decir, tanto las escenas de exteriores como las de interiores). La reacción de crítico y público fue unánime y negativa, y los actores aseguraron que era la última vez que se colocaban en la piel de sus personajes...hasta ahora, por supuesto.

A familiar (to the viewers) nightmare with Bobby and Sue Ellen kissing in the shower gives old J.R. a good idea to cause conflict between the current co-owners of Ewing Oil, his brother Bobby and his ex-wife Sue Ellen. J.R. is now running WestStar Oil but still longs for his former company. Sue Ellen is determined to bring Carter McKay into Ewing Oil but Bobby disagrees. Carter has found a big oil source in the lands of Southfork owned by Ray Krebbs. J.R. tries to put Ray in the middle of the company. Still married to Jenna, Ray travels to Dallas in search of financial help for his overseas business. He suddenly appears at a bar quarrel when Bobby has to defend himself and Sue Ellen from some cowboys.

J.R. keeps his alliance with Anita Smithfield, who offers him help in and out of bed. Sue Ellen meets one of Carter´s associates, Peter Ellington, a businessman with his own and violent means. Someone shoots J.R., again, but he is wearing a bulletproof vest and saves his life. At the same time, Bobby meets young entrepreneur Jennifer Jantzen, whose chemistry with him even gets Sue Ellen a bit jealous. J.R. is behind this too, but Jennifer confesses and starts over with Bobby.

J.R.´s life is in danger one more time when the limo that had to drive him is blown out. Finally, Ellington turns out to be the person who tried to kill J.R., and, after kidnapping Sue Ellen and fighting with Bobby and Ray, he is arrested. Bobby and Jennifer decide to take a vacation together, Ray gets the best price for his lands from Carter and returns to Switzerland with Jenna and their kids, and Sue Ellen smacks J.R.´s face for causing some much trouble.

"Dallas: War of the Ewings" was aired on April 24, 1998, over 20 years after the series premiered on CBS. Since Leonard Katzman had died prior to the previous sequel airing, Michael Preece was hired to direct it and Hagman and Duffy, besides of starring, were credited as "executive producers" along with Richard M. Heller. Also back from JRR were Linda Gray, George Kennedy, Tracy Scoggins and John Hoge.

A nice surprise was the presence of Steve Kanaly reprising his role of Ray Krebbs, though Kercheval, Landers, Katz and Rennard were out of the project this time. Now focused on the J.R.-Sue Ellen-Bobby business triangle, Bobby´s love interest was now Michelle Johnson, much younger than Duffy, and the movie was shot in Southfork from beginning to end for the very first time (this meaning outdoors and indoors scenes). The critics´ and audience response was unanimously negative, and the actors assured that it was the last time they put on the boots of their characters...until now, of course...
