LARRY HAGMAN

DE VERDADERO NOMBRE LAWRENCE HAGEMAN, nació el 21 de septiembre de 1931 en FORT WORTH, a unos 40 kilómetros de Dallas. En sus memorias, su madre, la famosa artista teatral MARY MARTIN confesó: “Cuando nació, mi 1ª impresión fue de terror.”

Sólo tenía diecisiete años y la gran ilusión de su vida era convertirse en una estrella. Su padre BEN HAGEMAN era un abogado tejano, pero ella sólo estaba interesada en su carrera, así que su matrimonio fue un fracaso y se divorciaron cuando el pequeño tenía cinco años: a los catorce, ya había pasado por dieciséis escuelas distintas. Esta época fue muy difícil para LARRY, que estaba resentido con su madre por dar prioridad a su carrera: MARY pasaba la mayor parte de su tiempo en las audiciones y, cuando LARRY cumplió ocho años, se casó con RICHARD HALLIDAY. Pero el niño no se llevaba bien con él y fue a vivir con sus abuelos. A los catorce años, fue enviado con su padre a la pequeña localidad de WEATHERFORD:

She was barely 17 and her main goal was becoming a star. His father BEN HAGEMAN was a Texan lawyer but she was only interested in her career, so their marriage was a failure and ended up in divorce when the kid was 5: at 14, he had already been at 16 different schools. Those times were really hard for LARRY, resented to his mother for giving priority to her career: MARY spent most of her time at the auditions and, when LARRY was 8, she married RICHARD HALLIDAY. But the child did not get along with him and stayed with his grandparents. At 14, he was sent at his father´s in the small town of WEATHERFORD:

"I got a job at Weatherford Oil, working with my own hands, while a machine was doing the same thing, one million times faster. I packed hay, handled a pneumatic hammer..."

Cuando se graduó en el BARD COLLEGE de N.Y., siguió los pasos de su madre en el mundo del espectáculo, primero en el Margo Jones Theatre-in-the-Round de DALLAS. Luego, apareció en el montaje de “La fierecilla domada” que puso en escena el N.Y.C. Center y pasó un año actuando en teatros regionales. Su madre iba a empezar una gira con el musical ANNIE GET YOUR GUN y les pidió a LARRY y a su hermana HELLER que participaran en la obra. Su padre le propuso después ir a estudiar Derecho en la universidad, pero le atraía más la profesión de actor.

En 1948, su madre le regaló un pasaje para SUECIA y pasó dos meses en ESTOCOLMO. En vista de que no conseguía hacer carrera con el joven, decidió llevárselo a EUROPA, e iniciarle en el teatro. En LONDRES, LARRY debutó en una versión de SOUTH PACIFIC montada en un teatro del WEST END y protagonizada por su madre, que se representó durante cinco años. Él tenía diecinueve y, tras aquel éxito, volvió al año siguiente para trabajar en una revista estrenada en el teatro LEICESTER. Por aquella época, no se llevaba muy bien con su madre y se trasladó a vivir al apartamento de su amigo TED FLICKER, donde conoció a la que habría de ser su esposa, MAJ AXELSSON, nacida en SUECIA y tres años mayor que él.

After attending BARD COLLEGE in N.Y., followed his mother´s steps in show business, first with Margo Jones Theatre-in-the-Round in DALLAS. Then he appeared in the N.Y.C. Center production of "The Taming of the Shrew" and spent a whole year acting in local theatre. His mother was going to start a tour with the musical ANNIE GET YOUR GUN and asked LARRY and his sister HELLER to join the show. After that, his father proposed him to study Law at university, but he was more attracted by the acting job.

In 1948, his mother gifted him a passage to SWEDEN and he spent 2 months in STOCKHOLM. As she could In LONDON, LARRY debuted in a WEST END montage of SOUTH PACIFIC starring his mother which lasted 5 years. He was 19 and, after that success, he returned the next year to do a revue released at LEICESTER theatre. By then he still did not get along with his mother and moved to his friend TED FLICKER´s, where he met his would be wife, MAJ AXELSSON, born in SWEDEN and 3 years older than he was.

MAJ se quedó embarazada por primera vez en 1958 y LARRY estaba entonces sin trabajo, pero conocía sus responsabilidades hacia su familia. Su carrera en TV comenzó en 1961 con una serie de apariciones en programas como "The ALCOA Hour". When they got married, LARRY was broke, while she already was a successful fashion designer. Then he enrolled in the U.S. Air Forces and, though he just had the corporal graduation, he spent 4 years producing, directing and playing in a lot of shows addressed to the soldiers in the front. Life was not easy for the young couple at first, since LARRY had a hard time getting acting jobs even with his mother´s influence, so they left to BRASIL to take care of a big estate bought by MARY. LARRY´s unhappy childhood had a positive consequence: both of them promised themselves that their children would never go through the same situation.

The next years he was wandering from show to show: he did on stage "Once Around the Block", "Career", "Comes A Day", "A Priest in the House" and others. MAJ got pregnant by first time in 1958 and LARRY was unemployed then, but knew his responsibilities to his family. His career on TV started off in 1961 with a number of appearances on shows like "The ALCOA Hour". After that he played on daytime soap "The Edge Of Night" for 2 years, and hesitantly took the role of astronaut TONY NELSON on the TV sitcom I DREAM OF JEANNIE. After 5 years playing the same part he had a nervous breakdown, due to the effort of "trying to make the best show in the world, instead of accepting it as just a light comedy", as HAGMAN himself confessed.

Por fin, un día le ofrecieron el guión de DALLAS. Cansado de leer argumentos parecidos, se lo entregó a su mujer y fue ella quien le dijo: “Aquí está el papel definitivo para tu carrera.” En un principio, discutió con los productores en tres ocasiones sobre el sueldo que iba a recibir, pero finalmente, llegaron a un acuerdo y, en cuestión de días, empezó a dar vida a J.R. EWING. Uno de los impulsos que le llevó a aceptar el rol fue la oportunidad de trabajar con BARBARA BEL GEDDES.

Su intervención en DALLAS no sólo le convirtió en una de las figuras más populares de la TV mundial, sino también en el actor televisivo mejor pagado de la historia: en 1984, cobraba 125.000 dólares por cada episodio. Ese mismo año, LARRY fue galardonado con una estrella en la que va inscrito su nombre, en el conocido WALK OF FAME de Hollywood. El anagrama fue colocado entre el de DICK POWELL y el de su propia madre. El maquiavélico J.R. le proporcionó popularidad, seguridad económica y miedo a las personas que le identificaban con el odiado J.R., por lo que se vio obligado a aumentar las medidas de seguridad en sus apariciones públicas.

At last he was offered the DALLAS´s script. Tired of reading stories like that, he gave it to his wife and she told him: "Here is the ultimate role for your career." At the beginning he discussed 3 times with the producers about the salary, but they eventually came to an agreement and, in a matter of a few days, he began to impersonate J.R. EWING. One of the reasons that led him to take the role was the chance to act with BARBARA BEL GEDDES.

His DALLAS character did not only make him one of the most popular stars in worldwide TV, but also the best paid TV actor in history: he was getting 125.000 dollars each episode in 1984. This same year LARRY was awarded with a star with his name on, at the well-known HOLLYWOOD WALK OF FAME. The star was placed between DICK POWELL´s and his own mother´s. Machiavellian J.R. provided him popularity, financial safety and fear to people who identified him with hated J.R., so he had to increase the security measures in his public appearances.

Después de treinta años de profesión, LARRY HAGMAN consiguió estabilidad y reconocimiento, a través de un personaje negativo y poseedor de casi todos los defectos humanos. Ya recuperado de un trasplante de hígado efectuado en julio de 1995, continuó haciendo campaña a favor de la donación de órganos y la energía solar y en contra del tabaco. Tras un par de breves apariciones en películas como NIXON y PRIMARY COLORS, y en los 2 telefilmes continuación de DALLAS, recientemente su carrera se había reavivado, con apariciones secundarias en series como la española "Somos cómplices", "Mujeres desesperadas" y la continuación de "Dallas" que producía la TNT:

“J.R. fue el papel de mi vida. ¿Qué iba a hacer después? Además, aquella era mi familia. Tenía a mi familia real, con mi esposa MAJ, y tenía a la familia EWING, y las quería a ambas.”

Larry Hagman falleció a las 16.20 (hora local de Dallas) del viernes día 22 de noviembre de 2012, rodeado de su familia y cerca de sus compañeros Patrick y Linda, a causa de complicaciones del cáncer que padecía.

After 30 years of work, LARRY HAGMAN achieved stability and acknowledgement through a negative character who had almost every human default. Larry Hagman died at 4.20 p.m. Friday 22 of November 2012, surrounded by his family and close to his acting fellows Patrick and Linda, from complications of his cancer.
