LORIMAR: LA FÁBRICA DE SERIES FAMILIARES

LORIMAR fue una las productoras independientes más poderosas de la TV americana. Fundada en 1955, sus comienzos, no obstante, fueron más bien difíciles para sus fundadores, MERV ADELSON (foto inferior, en la actualidad, consejero ejecutivo de WARNER), LEE RICH e IRWIN MOLASKY. En 1969, las dependencias de LORIMAR se limitaban a una oficina con 2 empleados en el edificio de apartamentos del 132 de RODEO DRIVE. A finales de los 80, contaba con más de 300 empleados, su propia red de distribución y sucursales en varios países, entre ellos Gran Bretaña y Australia.

LORIMAR was one of the most powerful independent producing companies in American TV. Founded in 1955, however, its beginnings were rather hard for its founders, MERV ADELSON (photo below, currently, an executive adviser for WARNER), LEE RICH and IRWIN MOLASKY. In 1969, the LORIMAR quarters were just one office with 2 employees in the apartment building at 132 RODEO DRIVE. At late 80´s, they had an over 300 people staff, their own distribution net and branches at several countries, among them the United Kingdom and Australia.

El cerebro de la compañía en sus inicios era LEE RICH, un ejecutivo proveniente del mundo de la publicidad que ya había formado una productora en 1966, la MIRISCH-RICH PRODUCTIONS, con la que obtuvo su primer éxito. Una vez asociado con ADELSON y MOLASKY, produjo algunos filmes para la TV que no tuvieron ningún impacto.

Pero en 1971 las cosas iban a cambiar para RICH y sus socios, cuando decidieron adaptar una novela autobiográfica de EARL HAMNER Jr., en torno a una familia de granjeros de Virginia durante la Depresión. THE HOMECOMING, como se tituló el telefilme, batió todos los récords de audiencia y dio lugar en 1972 a una popular serie, LOS WALTON, la 1ª saga televisual de la compañía, que se mantuvo 9 temporadas en antena. Su director ejecutivo, PHIL CAPICE, se incorporó poco después a LORIMAR y, en 1978, fue uno de los artífices del mayor boom de su historia: DALLAS.

The company´s brain was initially LEE RICH, an executive who came from the advertising business who had already created a producing company in 1966, MIRISCH-RICH PRODUCTIONS, wich provided him his first success. Once he joined ADELSON and MOLASKY, he produced a few telemovies that had no impact then.

But in 1971 things changed for RICH and associates, when they decided to adapt an autobiographical novel written by EARL HAMNER Jr., about a farming family in Virginia during the Depression years. The Pilot was titled THE HOMECOMING and broke all audience records, as well as spun-off into a popular show in 1972, THE WALTONS, the company´s first TV saga, which stayed for 9 seasons on air. Its executive producer PHIL CAPICE later joined LORIMAR and, in 1978, he was the one of the minds behind the greatest boom in its history: DALLAS.

Según su creador, DAVID JACOBS, los EWING no eran más que la otra cara de la moneda que constituían los WALTON. "La gente piensa que no es tan rica como los EWING" - admitió CAPICE - "pero al menos se cree feliz." Con DALLAS, LORIMAR empezó una ascensión a la siguieron otras series realizadas a partir del modelo de JACOBS: KNOTS LANDING, FALCON CREST y FLAMINGO ROAD, que también contribuyeron a elevar la cotización de LORIMAR como fábrica de sagas televisivas. Antes de eso, habían producido otras series de distinto enfoque, como HAWAI 5-0, CON 8 BASTA, LA FAMILIA APPLE o STUDS LONIGAN, con las que cosecharon un buen número de premios.

Entre 1977 y 1991, LORIMAR produjo asimismo películas para la pantalla grande con el nombre de "Lorimar Film Entertainment". Los títulos más conocidos de aquella serie de filmes fueron, por ejemplo, OFICIAL Y CABALLERO, EL CARTERO SIEMPRE LLAMA DOS VECES, S.O.B. o LAS AMISTADES PELIGROSAS, algunos de los cuales incluso obtuvieron numerosos premios, OSCAR incluidos.

Upon its creator, DAVID JACOBS, the EWING were the reverse side of the coin that was THE WALTONS. "People think they´re not as rich as the EWINGS" - admitted CAPICE - "but at least they believe they´re happy." Thanks to DALLAS, LORIMAR started a rise followed by other shows based on JACOBS´ pattern: KNOTS LANDING, FALCON CREST and FLAMINGO ROAD, which also helped to increase LORIMAR´s price as a TV saga factory. Before that, they had produced other products with a different focus, such as HAWAII 5-0, EIGHT IS ENOUGH, APPLE´S WAY or STUDS LONIGAN, that earned them a lot of awards.

Between 1977 and 1991, LORIMAR also produced big-screen movies as "Lorimar Film Entertainment". The most renown titles of that group of movies were, for instance, AN OFFICER AND A GENTLEMAN, THE POSTMAN ALWAYS RINGS TWICE, S.O.B. or DANGEROUS LIAISONS, some of which achieved many awards including the OSCAR.

Además de distribuir sus propios programas, la compañía adquirió todo el archivo de la productora cinematográfica ALLIED ARTISTS. Por otra parte, LORIMAR se fusionó con la empresa TELEPICTURES por 300.000.000 $ y adquirió los célebres Estudios de la MGM, donde se llevaban a cabo los rodajes de numerosas series. En 1989, WARNER COMMUNICATIONS adquirió LORIMAR TV, que siguió funcionando como productora televisiva hasta Julio de 1993, hasta que la WARNER BROS se fusionó con LORIMAR. La nueva división se conoce con el nombre de WB TV.

Aside of distributing its own shows, the company acquired the whole archive of the producing company ALLIED ARTISTS. At the same time, LORIMAR merged with TELEPICTURES for 300.000.000 $ and bought the famous MGM Studios, where many of their shows were filmed. In 1989, WARNER COMMUNICATIONS adquired LORIMAR TV, which keep working as a TV producing company until July 1993, when WARNER BROS merged with LORIMAR. The new division is known as WB TV.

THE MEN OF LORIMAR

PHILIP CAPICE, productor ejecutivo de DALLAS durante 8 años, nació en 1931 en New Jersey y obtuvo un EMMY por su labor en la comedia SYBIL. En 1980, fue también nominado por su trabajo en DALLAS, junto a KATZMAN y LEE RICH. Otros créditos suyos son CON 8 BASTA, HUNTER, las miniseries HELTER SKELTER y STUDS LONIGAN y los telefilmes EL PRÍNCIPE DE CENTRAL PARK, ERIC Y RONALD EL MALO. CAPICE pasó sus últimos años retirado del mundo de la TV y falleció el 30 de diciembre de 2009 en LOS ANGELES.

PHILIP CAPICE, the executive producer of DALLAS during 8 years, was born in 1931 in New Jersey and achieved an EMMY award for his work in the drama SYBIL. In 1980, he was also nominated for his task in DALLAS, together with KATZMAN and LEE RICH. Other credits of his are EIGHT IS ENOUGH, HUNTER, the mini-series HELTER SKELTER and STUDS LONIGAN and the telemovies THE PRINCE OF CENTRAL PARK, ERIC and BAD RONALD. CAPICE spent his last years retired from the TV business and died on December 30, 2009 in LOS ANGELES.

LEONARD KATZMAN, el "hombre fuerte" de DALLAS tras las cámaras, era un neoyorquino nacido en 1927 y fallecido de un infarto en 1996, poco después de finalizar el rodaje de EL REGRESO DE JR. Sustituyó a CAPICE como productor ejecutivo en el resto de la serie y a él se deben también otros productos tan populares como LA LEY DEL REVÓLVER, HAWAI 5-0, PETROCELLI, VIAJE FANTÁSTICO, WALKER o la miniserie ESCRÚPULOS. En 1997 fue creado un premio conmemorativo en su honor, dentro del LONE STAR FILM AND TV FESTIVAL. Todos sus hijos participaron en DALLAS en labores de producción, dirección, guión o como actores, caso de SHERRYL LYNN, la intérprete de la secretaria de CLIFF, JACKIE, fallecida prematuramente de cáncer de mama unos meses antes que su padre.

LEONARD KATZMAN was the "strong man" from DALLAS behind the scenes, a newyorker born in 1927 who died of a heart attack in 1996, just after finishing the shooting of J.R. RETURNS. He replaced CAPICE as a executive producer for the remains of the show and he is responsible for other popular products such as GUNSMOKE, HAWAII 5-0, PETROCELLI, FANTASTIC JOURNEY, WALKER TEXAS RANGER or the mini-series SCRUPLES. In 1997 a memorial award was created to honor him, within the LONE STAR FILM AND TV FESTIVAL.All his sons participated in DALLAS as producers, directors, writers or actors, as was the case of SHERRIL LYNN, who played CLIFF´s secretary JACKIE, and died too early of breast cancer a few months prior to his father.
