review: war of the ewings

April 24, 1998: CBS ruined our memory of "Dallas" by airing a second (and much worse) TVM sequel to the original series, after the first one, "J.R. Returns", produced a couple of years earlier. This time, there were no Cliff, Afton, John Ross, Christopher, Sly or Pamela Rebecca: only the later self-named "3 Musketeers": Sue Ellen, J.R. and Bobby, aside from the newly added Ray, once again played by a brunette Steve Kanaly. Carter McKay and Tracy Scoggins´ slutty Anita Smithfield (lawyer Harv´s granddaughter also seen in JRR) were also there, as was Bobby´s new love interest, thirtysomething Michelle Johnson as business woman Jennifer Jantzen. But don´t worry fans of TNT´s "Dallas": Like the Dream Season, none of this really happened. Both TVM´s were erased by the new sequel´s showrunner so she could rewrite Cliff´s daughter´s character. Only the opening scene is worth awhile: a tongue-in-cheek dream sequence that was a teaser of what followed after that: a self-parody.

La CBS acabó de arruinar nuestro recuerdo de "Dallas" al emitir una segunda (y mucho peor) secuela de la serie original, de hora y media de duración. La primera, "El regreso de J.R.", se había producido un par de años antes. Esta vez, no estaban Cliff, Afton, John Ross, Christopher, Sly o Pamela Rebecca: sólo los luego autobautizados "3 Mosqueteros": Sue Ellen, J.R. y Bobby, además del nuevo fichaje de Ray, una vez más interpretado por un moreno Steve Kanaly. Carter McKay y la viciosilla Anita Smithfield encarnada por Tracy Scoggins (como la nieta del abogado Harv también vista en ERDJR) estaban allí, así como el nuevo interés amoroso de Bobby, la treintañera Michelle Johnson en el papel de la empresaria Jennifer Jantzen. Pero no os preocupéis, fans de la nueva "Dallas": Como sucedió con la Etapa-Sueño, nada de esto ocurrió tampoco. Las 2 secuelas fueron eliminadas por la nueva productora de la serie, para poder reescribir el personaje de la hija de Cliff. Sólo valía la pena la escena inicial: una cómplice secuencia onírica que fue un adelanto de lo que seguía después: una autoparodia.
