61 - the fourth son

December 12, 1980: Jock Ewing revealed to his ranch foreman Ray Krebbs that he was his real father. The Ewing patriarch had just found out through Ray´s presumed father Amos Krebbs (William Windom), who showed up at Southfork and blackmailed Jock with the proof of his late wife Margaret´s diary. Jock had been involved with her, a nurse from Kansas, back at WWII in England and told Miss Ellie about it, but he never knew the boy was his own too. Actually, the twist was a way to keep Steve Kanaly in the show because he wanted out to pursue his movie career. Hagman thought Kanaly was the one who most resembled Davis and he and the producers came up with this storyline the previous year. It had to happen in the dove hunt episode, instead of Jock´s first wife plot, but they felt Ray´s affair with Lucy still was too recent. The last scene of the episode when Jock announced he had a fourth son probably showed the biggest shock reaction from J.R. in all the series´ run. Shall we see good old Ray again in TNT´s "Dallas" again and in a scene longer than 15 seconds...?

4 de marzo de 1984 (en Cataluña): Jock Ewing revelaba al capataz de su rancho, Ray Krebbs, que él era su verdadero padre. Acababa de enterarse a través del presunto padre de Ray, Amos Krebbs (William Windom), que había aparecido por Southfork para chantajear a Jock con la prueba del diario de su difunta esposa Margaret. Jock tenido una aventura con ella, una enfermera de Kansas, durante la Segunda Guerra Mundial en Inglaterra, y se lo había contado a Ellie, pero nunca supo que el chico también era hijo suyo. En realidad, el giro de la trama fue creado para que Steve Kanaly se quedara en la serie, ya que deseaba marcharse y continuar su carrera en el cine. Hagman creía que Kanaly era quien más se parecía a Davis y él y los productores habían sugerido la historia el año anterior. Debía suceder en el episodio de la cacería de palomas, en lugar de la revelación sobre la primera mujer de Jock, pero consideraron que la relación de Ray y Lucy aún estaba demasiado reciente. La última escena del episodio con Jock anunciando que tenía un cuarto hijo dio lugar, seguramente, a la mayor reacción de sorpresa de J.R. en toda la serie. ¿Volveremos a ver al bueno y viejo Ray en la nueva "Dallas" en una escena que dure más de 15 segundos...?
