DALLAS

A principios de 1978, el director y guionista DAVID JACOBS tuvo la genial idea de poner en marcha la serie mientras veía en TV la película “DIÁLOGOS DE UN MATRIMONIO” (I. Bergman), donde una difícil relación de pareja era analizada en profundidad por el director sueco, considerado como uno de los más herméticos del cine europeo. JACOBS tuvo la original ocurrencia de plantear este mismo tema en un ambiente típicamente USA y extenderlo a varias parejas de forma simultánea, lo que permitiría un análisis más completo...y más rentable.

Pero la CBS, la cadena que le encomendó el proyecto, le pidió algo más espectacular, estilo saga. Su idea inicial se acabaría convirtiendo luego en KNOTS LANDING, la serie paralela a DALLAS. Así que imaginó en principio que la serie podía situarse en el mundo de las altas finanzas de NUEVA YORK, pero se consideró que la ciudad de los rascacielos había sido ya muy frecuentada. Ganado y pozos petrolíferos, en cambio, constituían un elemento nuevo y a la vez real, ya que TEJAS había sido uno de los estados que conoció un desarrollo económico más vertiginoso en los años 70.

El siguiente paso fue contactar con una productora que estuviera dispuesta a llevar a buen término el proyecto. LORIMAR accedió a ello, pues tenía en su haber diversos éxitos con series como LA FAMILIA o CON 8 BASTA, de temática opuesta a la de DALLAS. Rodada inicialmente como una etapa-piloto o miniserie en 5 partes, el 2 de abril de 1978 se emitía el primer episodio, LA HIJA DE DIGGER. El secreto de su inesperado éxito consistía en unos brillantes guiones y un ajustado reparto. Los papeles de los patriarcas estaban destinados desde el comienzo a BARBARA BEL GEDDES, notable actriz con una gran experiencia teatral, y a JIM DAVIS, un viejo actor de reparto de incontables "westerns" que nunca había tenido oportunidad de sobresalir.

El papel central de la serie, que alcanzaría una mítica popularidad, fue a parar a LARRY HAGMAN, actor entonces cuarentón, hijo de la estrella teatral MARY MARTIN que no consiguió triunfar en sus incursiones cinematográficas y televisivas. Su único éxito relativo lo había obtenido en los 60 con la serie MI BELLA GENIO que protagonizó junto a BARBARA EDEN. HAGMAN no hubiera imaginado jamás que un papel de esas características (un “malo” sin paliativos) le iba a convertir en el actor más popular y mejor pagado de la historia de la TV norteamericana. La persona que le convenció para que aceptara el rol de J.R. EWING, un hombre adúltero y sin escrúpulos, fue precisamente su esposa Maj.

Los demás papeles se repartieron mediante diversas pruebas realizadas por LORIMAR. Un papel de transexual en una comedia sirvió para que los productores se fijaran en LINDA GRAY y la convocaran para una prueba, que consistía en decir 4 líneas y llorar. Y por lo visto, resultó tan convincente, que el rol de SUE ELLEN EWING, la esposa de J.R., pasó a ser interpretado por ella. En cuanto al personaje de PAMELA, el productor ejecutivo PHILIP CAPICE y la directora de reparto IRENE MARIANO, no dudaron en elegir a VICTORIA PRINCIPAL cuando la vieron nadar en seco tras decir su diálogo, tal como especificaba el guión.

Esa escena pertenecía al primer episodio y junto a VICTORIA, actuaría STEVE KANALY, quien por su lado se presentó en el plató vestido de capataz. De este modo, consiguió el papel de RAY KREBBS, el capataz del rancho donde vivían los protagonistas, aunque optaba a cualquiera de los papeles masculinos del reparto. El personaje de la rebelde LUCY EWING fue asignado a la vital CHARLENE TILTON, y PATRICK DUFFY completaba el elenco de la serie en su 1ª temporada, como BOBBY EWING.

Aunque fue algo que durante mucho tiempo se mantuvo en secreto, el último episodio de los 5 que conformaban la etapa-piloto, finalizaba con la muerte de BOBBY, que dejaba sola a PAMELA en su lucha contra J.R. Por ironías del destino, el menor de los EWING “fallecería” 7 años después a petición de su intérprete...y, un año más tarde, “volvería a la vida”, por expreso deseo de los espectadores, demostrándose así que era el público quien regía los destinos de sus héroes televisivos.

Sin embargo, en aquel lejano 1978, DAVID JACOBS fue persuadido para eliminar del guión aquella 1ª tragedia que, como luego se vio, no hubiera proporcionado larga vida a la serie, precisamente. KEN KERCHEVAL (CLIFF BARNES) pasó a formar parte del grupo protagonista en la 2ª etapa, tras aparecer como “also starring” en la 1ª. A partir de entonces, los productores contratarían a un extenso número de actores para reforzar el reparto. De este modo, se sucedieron los fichajes de desconocidas bellezas como MARY CROSBY (KRISTIN), AUDREY LANDERS (AFTON), MORGAN BRITTANY (KATHERINE) o SHEREE J. WILSON (APRIL).

La 4ª etapa registró una baja: JIM DAVIS, el patriarcal JOCK, había fallecido antes de concluir el rodaje del anterior bloque de episodios. Para cubrir el vacío dejado por este actor, fue contratado como personaje fijo HOWARD KEEL como CLAYTON FARLOW, 2º esposo de ELLIE EWING. Al mismo tiempo, SUSAN HOWARD, intérprete de la futura esposa del capataz, DONNA, fue considerada protagonista en esa misma etapa.

Actores como JARED MARTIN, LEIGH McCLOSKEY, TIMOTHY PATRICK MURPHY, JOHN BECK, CHRISTOPHER ATKINS, DACK RAMBO y SASHA MITCHELL hicieron su intervención más o menos extensa, según el caso, como atractivo adicional para el público femenino. Otros papeles fueron interpretados por actrices ya conocidas en EEUU: SUSAN FLANNERY, JOANNA CASSIDY, PRISCILLA POINTER, LOIS CHILES, BARBARA CARRERA, LEIGH TAYLOR-YOUNG, LESLEY-ANNE DOWN o BARBARA EDEN.

Ocasionalmente se recurrió a estrellas como ALEXIS SMITH y DONNA REED, mientras que, otras veces, las elegidas eran ya famosas por su vida sentimental (PRISCILLA PRESLEY) o por haber ganado concursos de belleza (DEBORAH SHELTON, JENILEE HARRISON y KAREN KOPINS, entre otras). Junto al heterogéneo grupo formado por los actores de DALLAS, mencionaremos a aquellos que rehusaron participar en la serie (ROBERT FOXWORTH), o bien abandonaron sus personajes (como COLLEEN CAMP, MORGAN FAIRCHILD, FRANCINE TACKER, DAVID ACKROYD y DAVID WAYNE). A consecuencia de tantas deserciones, los productores se vieron obligados a buscar sustitutos con demasiada frecuencia. Entre los artistas que, supuestamente, rechazaron papeles en DALLAS, destacaremos a MADONNA, WARREN BEATTY, NASTASSIA KINSKI, DOROTHY MALONE, LORI SINGER y RYAN O´NEAL. Todos ellos prefirieron continuar con sus carreras en cine o TV.

De los 5 episodios de que iba a constar inicialmente, se pasó a 13 y luego a 29, finalizando la 1ª temporada. En marzo de 1982 se emitió el episodio nº 100, y en noviembre del 85, se registraba la asombrosa cifra de 200 capítulos, hasta superar de largo los 300. Hay algo que para los productores estaba siempre fuera de discusión: LARRY HAGMAN debía quedarse en la serie, ya que su personaje J.R. era el símbolo de DALLAS, con su sombrero tejano y su ambivalente sonrisa.

At early 1978, director and writer DAVID JACOBS had the great idea of creating the show as he was watching I. Bergman´s movie “SCENES FROM A MARRIAGE” on TV: a troubled relationship was being profoundly analysed by the Swedish director, considered as one of the most impenetrable in the European cinema. JACOBS originally presented this issue in an all-American background and extended it to several couples simultaneously, allowing a more complete analysis...and more profitable too.

But CBS, the network that assigned him the project, asked him for something bigger, saga-like. His first idea ended up becoming KNOTS LANDING, the DALLAS´ spin-off. So he originally imagined the show to be located in the N.Y. high finance world, but the skycrapers´ city was considered to be overused. Cattle and oil fields turned out to be a whole new, real element, since TEXAS had been one of the most financially developed states in the 70´s.

The next step was contacting a company to produce the project: LORIMAR agreed to. It had made several hit series like FAMILY or 8 IS ENOUGH, thematically opposed to DALLAS. Shot as a 5-part pilot-season or miniseries, episode 1, titled DIGGER´S DAUGHTER, was aired on 2 April 1978. The secret of its unexpected success was due to the brilliant scripts and the well-cast stars. The roles of the patriarchs were always meant for BARBARA BEL GEDDES, a remarkable actress with a lifetime experience on stage, and JIM DAVIS, an old supporting actor in uncountable westerns who never had a chance to outstand.

The show´s main role, the one destined to become a popular icon, was cast with LARRY HAGMAN, a fortysomething actor, the son of stage star MARY MARTIN who didn´t make it in his performances in movies and TV. His only relative success had been the 60´S sitcom I DREAM OF JEANNIE co-starring BARBARA EDEN. HAGMAN would have never guessed that such a character (an unredeemable bad guy) was going to make him the most popular, highest paid star in the American TV History. The person who convinced him to accept the role of J.R. EWING, an adulterous man with no scruples, was just his wife Maj.

The other roles were cast through auditions at LORIMAR. A role of a transsexual in a sitcom made the producers notice LINDA GRAY and call her for a test: to say 4 lines and cry. Obviously, she was convincing enough to get the part of SUE ELLEN EWING, J.R.´s wife. As for PAMELA, the executive producer PHILIP CAPICE and the casting director IRENE MARIANO did not hesitate to choose VICTORIA PRINCIPAL when they saw her dry-swimming after saying her dialogue, the way the script described to.

That scene belonging to episode 1 was co-acted by STEVE KANALY, who went to the studio dressing like a foreman. That´s how he got the role of RAY KREBBS, the foreman of the ranch where the core characters lived. He was auditioning for any of the other available male parts, though. Rebel LUCY EWING went to sparkling CHARLENE TILTON, and PATRICK DUFFY as BOBBY EWING completed the show´s cast in its Season 1.

Although kept secret for a long time, BOBBY´s death was meant to be the end of the pilot-season´s fifth episode, leaving PAMELA confronting J.R. alone. Ironically, the youngest EWING “died” 7 years later by request of his performer...and one year later, he “resurrected”, as the viewers wished to, proving the audiences to be who really ruled over their TV heroes´ destinies.

However, in that far 1978, DAVID JACOBS was persuaded to write that first tragedy off the script since it didn not give a long life to the show, as seen later. KEN KERCHEVAL (CLIFF BARNES) was credited as part of the main cast on Season 2, after also starring on Season 1. From then on, producers hired a wide list of actors to support the stars. Therefore were cast unknown beauties like MARY CROSBY (KRISTIN), AUDREY LANDERS (AFTON), MORGAN BRITTANY (KATHERINE) or SHEREE J. WILSON (APRIL).

Season 4 registered one loss: JIM DAVIS, starring as patriarch JOCK, had died before tying up the previous episode series. To fulfill the space left by him, they called back HOWARD KEEL as CLAYTON FARLOW, future second husband to MISS ELLIE EWING. At the same time, SUSAN HOWARD, who played the foreman´s wife-to-be, DONNA, was credited as a star from the same season on.

Actors like JARED MARTIN, LEIGH McCLOSKEY, TIMOTHY PATRICK MURPHY, JOHN BECK, CHRISTOPHER ATKINS, DACK RAMBO and SASHA MITCHELL gueststarred on a more or less regular basis, upon the case, as a plus appeal for the female audiences. Other parts went to better-known US actresses: SUSAN FLANNERY, JOANNA CASSIDY, PRISCILLA POINTER, LOIS CHILES, BARBARA CARRERA, LEIGH TAYLOR-YOUNG, LESLEY-ANNE DOWN or BARBARA EDEN.

Incidentally, they hired stars like ALEXIS SMITH and DONNA REED, while sometimes they were cast for their well-known lives (PRISCILLA PRESLEY) or for winning beauty contests (DEBORAH SHELTON, JENILEE HARRISON and KAREN KOPINS, among others). Along with the DALLAS stars, we should mention those who said no to the show (ROBERT FOXWORTH), or quit their characters (as did COLLEEN CAMP, MORGAN FAIRCHILD, FRANCINE TACKER, DAVID ACKROYD and DAVID WAYNE). Because of so many defections, the producers had to look for substitutes too often. Among the stars who supposedly refused to act on DALLAS, we should remark MADONNA, WARREN BEATTY, NASTASSIA KINSKI, DOROTHY MALONE, LORI SINGER and RYAN O´NEAL. All of them preferred to resume their careers in movies or TV.

Instead the initial 5 episodes, 13 were aired and then more to complete 29, thus finishing Season 1. On March 1982 episode nº 100 was shown, on November´85 the amazing number of 200 episodes was registered, until summing up over 300. Something always was out of discussion for the producers: LARRY HAGMAN should stay in the show, since his character J.R. was the symbol of DALLAS, wearing his Stetson and his ambivalent smile.
