252 - after the fall : ewing rise

September 25, 1987: Pam Ewing was rushed to the hospital by helicopter after her car (actually Bobby´s) crashed into a butane gas tanker. This was the way Victoria Principal exited the show that had made her rich and famous. In fact, she did believe at the time that Pam had died in the accident and stopped watching the series. A few months later, some friends told her that the "Dallas" people were using a stand-in of hers all bandaged like an Egyptian mummy and Pam was still alive, but had left her family because she didn´t want them to see her disfigured. Thus started the "deconstruction" (using Woody Allen´s expression) of the Pam character, who after that, filed Bobby for a divorce and, one year later, told Cliff she was going to marry her surgeon and would never return to Dallas. Actually she was hiding to him that had a few months left to live and, thanks to the TNT´s "Dallas", when she seemed to be in remission, and determined to go back to Dallas and see Christopher, suddenly died of pancreatic cancer. To many of the "Dallas" fans (inclusing myself), Pam´s accident was the beginning of the end of the show. As Victoria herself expressed earlier this year, the Bobby-Pam love story was a classic tragic one and was deemed to end as it ended, therefore she didn´t intend to reprise her role in case the current series wanted her back.

22 de junio de 1989 (en Cataluña): Pam Ewing era trasladada al hospital en helicóptero después de que su coche (en realidad el de Bobby) se estrellase contra un camión que transportaba gas butano. De esta manera, Victoria Principal abandonó la serie que la había hecho rica y famosa. De hecho ella creyó que Pam había fallecido en el accidente y dejó de seguir la serie. Unos meses después, unos amigos le dijeron que la gente de "Dallas" estaban utilizando a una doble suya completamente vendada cual momia egipcia y que Pam seguía viva, pero había dejado a su familia porque no quería que la vieran desfigurada. Así comenzaba la "deconstrucción" (como diría Woody Allen) del personaje de Pam, que después le pidió el divorcio a Bobby y, un año más tarde, le dijo a Cliff que iba a casarse con su cirujano y nunca volvería a Dallas. En verdad, le ocultaba que le quedaban sólo unos meses de vida y, gracias a la nueva "Dallas", cuando parecía estar recuperándose, decidida a regresar a Dallas para ver a Christopher, falleció de repente de cáncer de páncreas. Para muchos de los fans de "Dallas" (incluido yo), el accidente de Pam supuso el inicio del declive de la serie. Como la misma Victoria expresó este mismo año, la historia de amor de Bobby y Pam era la clásica historia de final trágico y estaba destinada a terminar como acabó, y por ello no tenía la intención de retomar su papel en caso de que la llamaran de la nueva serie.
