(A partir de esta Etapa, y hasta el final de la serie, KEN KERCHEVAL figura como protagonista en la cabecera, junto al resto del reparto. En la mayoría de episodios, aparecen como co-protagonistas RANDOLPH POWELL (ALAN BEAM), MARY CROSBY (la nueva KRISTIN) y KEENAN WYNN (el nuevo DIGGER), que pasará de los títulos finales a los títulos iniciales como actor invitado. Además, continúan como secretarias MEG GALLAGHER (sólo en algunos episodios) y JEANNA MICHAELS.
From this Season on, and through the end of the show, KEN KERCHEVAL will be starring in the titles, together with the rest of the main cast. Guest-starring in most episodes, RANDOLPH POWELL (ALAN BEAM), MARY CROSBY (new KRISTIN) and, initially at the closing titles, KEENAN WYNN (new DIGGER), who will be credited at the beginning of the episodes afterward. Also, still playing the secretaries are MEG GALLAGHER (only in a few episodes) and JEANNA MICHAELS.)
1/30: "WHATEVER HAPPENED TO BABY JOHN?" ("¿QUÉ HA PASADO CON JOHN EWING III?")(I)

Unas semanas después, el bebé se ha recuperado y está lo bastante fuerte como para que sus padres lo lleven a casa. Sin embargo, en SOUTHFORK, SUE ELLEN muestra un total desinterés por el niño, ante la mirada de LUCY y ELLIE:
"Me compraste una vez, J.R. Pero ya no puedes hacerlo. Ya no estoy en venta" - dice SUE ELLEN con frialdad. Por otro lado, ella confía a ELLIE que siempre le parece que tenga todo controlado, a lo que responde la matriarca:
"He cometido errores y espero cometer muchos más, aunque no demasiados. No te preocupes por el pasado, no hace mucho bien. Y tú tienes el futuro por delante. Tal como lo veo, creo que será muy bueno. J.R. no se ha comportado tan bien desde que tenía seis años. Quizá tener un hijo era justo lo que quería..."
PAM intenta que CLIFF desista en su promesa de recuperar a SUE ELLEN y al bebé, que considera suyo. J.R. da la bienvenida a un nuevo colaborador, ALAN BEAM, abogado del bufete de Smithfield y Bennett. Cuando J.R. obliga a SUE ELLEN a acompañarla al hospital para recoger al niño, se encuentran con la policía en la entrada:
"Su hijo ha sido secuestrado..."
A few weeks later, the baby is recovered and strong enough to be taken home by his parents. However, at SOUTHFORK, SUE ELLEN seems totally uninterested in the child, in front of LUCY and ELLIE:
"You bought me once, J.R. And you can't do it anymore. I am no longer for sale" - says SUE ELLEN coldly. Also, she confides MISS ELLIE that she seems to be always in control, to which the matriarch answers:
"Oh, I've made my mistake, I expect to make many more. Just not too many, I hope. You shouldn't brood about the past. It doesn't do much good. And you have your whole future ahead of you. From where I sit it looks fine. J.R. hasn't behaved this well since he was six years old. Maybe having a child was just what he wanted."
PAM is trying to make CLIFF give up on his promise of getting back SUE ELLEN and the baby, to whom he considers his own. J.R. welcomes a new collaborator, ALAN BEAM, a lawyer from the SMITHFIELD & BENNETT firm. When J.R. makes SUE ELLEN go with him to the hospital to pick up the baby, they find the police at the entrance:
"Your baby has been kidnapped..."

2/31: "WHATEVER HAPPENED TO BABY JOHN?" (II)

SUE ELLEN se siente culpable por lo ocurrido, mientras BOBBY sospecha firmemente de su cuñado CLIFF. Los antiguos cómplices de J.R. han salido de la cárcel y amenazan a J.R. para hacerle creer que tienen al niño. Finalmente, será PAM quien encuentre la pista que les llevará al pequeño: Se trata de una mujer llamada PRISCILLA que ha estado visitando al bebé hasta su desaparición. BOBBY, CLIFF y PAM la visitan y, finalmente, descubren que tiene en su casa al pequeño JOHN. Tras disculparse ante SUE ELLEN, PRISCILLA, que había perdido a su bebé, se lo entrega a SUE ELLEN. Pero esta no duda en cedérselo rápidamente a la Sra.REEVES, la niñera, ante un perplejo J.R.
SUE ELLEN feels guilty for what has happened, while BOBBY strongly suspects of his brother-in-law CLIFF. J.R.´s old accomplices are out of prison and threatens J.R. to make him believe that they have the baby. Eventually, PAM will be the one to find the clue leading to Little John: a woman called PRISCILLA has been visiting the baby right until his disappearance. BOBBY, CLIFF, and PAM call on her and, finally, discover that she has the baby at home. After apologizing to SUE ELLEN, PRISCILLA, who had lost her newborn baby, gives him back to SUE ELLEN. But she quickly holds him on to nanny Mrs. REEVES, in front of a perplexed J.R.

3/32: "THE SILENT KILLER" (“EL ASESINO SILENCIOSO”)

Las dos familias se han reunido en el Aeropuerto de DALLAS. Por una parte, están SUE ELLEN y J.R., que esperan a PATRICIA y KRISTIN SHEPARD. También espera CLIFF, que da la bienvenida a su padre DIGGER:
"Cuando haya acabado con la Ewing Oil - asegura CLIFF - , no les quedará nada. Les arruinaré." "Nunca he querido eso" "Pero yo puedo hacerlo. J.R. intentó detenerme pero no puede. Ha probado todos los trucos que conoce y parece que ya se le han terminado." "Sabes, empiezas a sonar como uno de ellos...Uno de los EWING. Sólo quiero lo que me corresponde. No ver arruinado a JOCK EWING." "Le arruinaré. Es simple justicia, nada más..." A pesar de sus demostraciones de buena salud, DIGGER no parece estar en buen momento...SUE ELLEN recibe a su madre y hermana, que comenta sobre su estancia en California:
"Ha sido agradable. Estábamos en un apartamento encantador. Pero los hombres de allí eran tan...superficiales. Los que conocí estaban casados, en terapia o eran gays, o las tres cosas." LUCY hace un comentario profético sobre KRISTIN a RAY: ""Es una bruja. Va a causar problemas en cuanto pueda, espera y verás." "Estás preocupada porque alguien te robará la atención aquí. Es decir, cuando se trata de causar problemas, creo que tú quieres tener los derechos exclusivos." J.R. y SUE ELLEN siguen discutiendo a puerta cerrada:
"El niño es mi castigo, J.R. Me recuerda que fui utilizada por dos hombres crueles y que dejé que mis emociones se impusieran a mi sentido común." "Bueno, he aceptado al niño, eso es seguro." "J.R., siempre has sido demasiado generoso con tu afecto, es tu único defecto." El diagnóstico del médico es claro: DIGGER padece una enfermedad genética llamada neurofibromatosis.
Both families are coincidentally reunited at the DALLAS Airport. On one side, there is SUE ELLEN and J.R., waiting for PATRICIA and KRISTIN SHEPARD. CLIFF is welcoming his father DIGGER:
"When I'm through with Ewing Oil - CLIFF assures - , they're gonna be wiped out. Flat broke." "I never wanted that. See, but I can do it. J.R. tried to stop me but he can't. He's tried every trick in the book, he just happens to be fresh outta tricks." "You know, you get to sound just like one of them? One of the Ewings! I only want what's coming to me. I don't want to see Jock Ewing flat broke." "He's gonna be flat broke! That's simple justice. Just the way it is..." Despite his good health showing off, DIGGER does not seem to be in a good moment...SUE ELLEN welcomes her mother and sister, who explains about their stay at California:
"Pleasant. We were in a lovely apartment hotel. But the men there were so... unsubstantial. The ones I met were either married, in therapy, gay, or all three." LUCY makes a prophetic comment on KRISTIN to RAY: "She's a witch. She's gonna cause trouble the first chance she gets, you just wait and see." "Well, you're just worried about losing some of the attention around here. I mean, when it comes to causin' trouble, I think you want exclusive rights." J.R. and SUE ELLEN keep on fighting in private:
"The child is my punishment, J.R. He reminds me that I was used by two cruel men and that I let my emotions get in the way of my good sense." "Well, I've accepted the child, now surely..." "J.R., you have always been too generous with your affections. It is your one big fault." The doctor´s diagnosis is clear: DIGGER suffers a genetic disease called neurofibromatosis.

4/33: "SECRETS" ("SECRETOS")

La familia BARNES está preocupada por la enfermedad de DIGGER, que se ha transmitido a sus descendientes. DIGGER intenta convencerles de que no es tan grave, pues ellos la han superado. La incidencia letal es mayor en los recién nacidos y PAM teme por el hijo de SUE ELLEN. Esta continúa atacando verbalmente a J.R., que se defiende:
"Oye, ¿por qué no terminas esta copa por mí, SUE ELLEN? Tal vez deberías volver a beber. Al menos cuando te emborrachabas, no hablabas tanto..."
Al final, se confirma su propio embarazo, que oculta a BOBBY. Al mismo tiempo, BOBBY intenta que LUCY haga las paces con su madre VALENE. Pero J.R. la localiza e intenta comprarla de nuevo, siendo rechazado una vez más:
"Tu y ese borracho de mi hermano haríais lo que fuera para volver a vivir en SOUTHFORK. Para haceros con una parte del pastel antes de que sea demasiado tarde." "¿Crees que el dinero es la respuesta de todo, verdad?" "Es tu respuesta. Y utilizas a LUCY para conseguirlo." "No me importa lo que creas, porque te equivocas. No me iré sin ver a LUCY" "Te marcharás antes de que anochezca." "Sal de aquí, J.R. Llamaré a la policía si te vas." "Coge tus maletas y lárgate de aquí en cinco minutos, o haré que un amigo mío te acompañe a las afueras de la ciudad y te deje allí, permanentemente" "Eso ya no funcionará. No volveré a huir de ti. Ya me has hecho todo lo que podrías hacerme. No me queda nada salvo LUCY, y no voy a perderla de nuevo." Cuando LUCY oye la conversación, sabe que debe volver a empezar con su madre.
The BARNES family is worried about DIGGER´s disease, transmitted to his descendants. DIGGER tries to convince them that it is not so serious since they overcame it. The lethal incidence on newborn babies is bigger and PAM fears for SUE ELLEN´s child. The latter goes on attacking J.R. verbally and he defends himself:
"Here, why don't you finish this for me, SUE ELLEN? And maybe you ought to start drinking again. At least when you were drunk you didn't talk so much." In the end, her own pregnancy is confirmed but hidden to BOBBY. At the same time, BOBBY helps LUCY make peaces with her mother VALENE. But J.R. tracks her down and tries to bribe her again, but is rejected once more time:
"You and that drunken brother of mine would do just about anything to live in Southfork again. Get a slice of the pie, before it’s too late." "You think money's the answer to everything to you, don't you?" "I think it's an answer to you. And you're using LUCY to get at it." "I don´t care what you think, I won´t leave until I see LUCY" "You’re leaving here before nightfall." "Get out of here, J.R. I swear I’ll call the police if you don’t!" "Now, go on, pack your little bags. You’ll be out of here in about five minutes. If you don’t, I’ll have a friend of mine escort you out of town and keep you out. Permanently." "It won’t work anymore, J.R. I have run from you for the last time. There’s nothing left for you to do to me. I’ve got nothing left to lose – except LUCY, and I’m not gonna lose her again!" When LUCY overhears the talk, then she knows that she must start over with her mama.

5/34: "THE KRISTIN AFFAIR" ("EL ASUNTO KRISTIN")

J.R. no ceja en su lucha contra CLIFF. Para compensar los impedimentos que el DCT le pone a la hora de hacer prospecciones en Tejas, lleva a cabo gestiones para perforar en una región de ASIA. KRISTIN, que había decidido estudiar Arquitectura, abandona los estudios y acepta un empleo como secretaria en la EWING OIL. Antes de marcharse, su madre mantiene con ella una conversación:
"Algún día encontrarás a un hombre así para ti. Sé que puedo confiar en que recordarás todo lo que te he enseñado, como buscar la mejor oportunidad. Puedo estar tranquila sabiendo que nunca harías nada que lastime a tu hermana. Ante todo, queremos que SUE ELLEN sea feliz. Podríamos darle todo nuestro cariño y apoyo si tuviera que volver a empezar en otro sitio. Aunque echaría de menos a un yerno como J.R. Nunca he conocido a nadie que disfrute de la caza tanto como él, casi tanto como de la captura. Hagas lo que hagas, KRIS, será lo mejor para las tres."
"Necesito pensarlo un poco" - le dice KRISTIN a J.R. sobre su incipiente relación. "¿Lo entiendes?" "No soy exactamente un hombre paciente..." PAMELA comunica finalmente a BOBBY la noticia de su embarazo. Mientras, J.R. es obligado por el banquero LELAND a hipotecar el rancho para el negocio de Asia.
J.R. does not give up on his fight against CLIFF. In order to compensate the interferences from the O.L.M. makes about drilling in Texas, he plots to be able to drill in an Asian area. KRISTIN, who had decided to study Architecture, change plans and takes a job as a secretary at EWING OIL. Before leaving, her mother has a serious talk with her:
"Someday you'll find a man like that just for yourself. I know I can trust you to remember all the things I've taught you. Like watching for the right opportunity. I can be relaxed knowing that you'll never do anything to harm your sister. Above all, we want SUE ELLEN to be happy. We could give her all the love and support she'd need to start a new life elsewhere. I'd certainly miss having a son-in-law like J.R. I've never met a man who enjoys the chase as much as he does. Almost more than winning. Whatever you do, KRIS, it'll be the right thing for all of us."
"I need a little time to think" - she tells J.R. about their affair. "Can you understand that?" "I'm not exactly a patient man..." PAMELA eventually reveals to BOBBY the news of her pregnancy. Meanwhile, J.R. is obliged by banker LELAND to mortgage the ranch for the Asian business.

6/35: "THE DOVE HUNT" ("CACERÍA DE PALOMAS")

ELLIE está preocupada por su salud y manda a los hombres de la familia de cacería a Louisiana. BOBBY, J.R., RAY Y JOCK no sospechan que se convertirán en el blanco de unos antiguos socios del patriarca. La venganza acaba con heridas de bala para JOCK y J.R.:
"No buscaba la venganza" - dice TOM OWENS a JOCK - "sino escupirte a la cara. Me aplastaste como a una cucaracha, y después de 32 años, ni siquiera te acuerdas de mi nombre. Vas a pagar por eso."
Cuando es herido, JOCK confiesa a J.R. que había estado casado antes con otra mujer, AMANDA. El problema es que lleva 40 años internada en una clínica mental, y nunca le habló del tema a ELLIE. JOCK le pide a su hijo que, si algo le pasa, se asegure de que a AMANDA no le falte de nada.
ELLIE is upset about her health and sends the family men away on a hunting to Louisiana. BOBBY, J.R., RAY, and JOCK do not suspect they will become the moving target for some former associates of the patriarch. The revenge ends up with bullet wounds for both JOCK and J.R.:
"I didn't want revenge" - TOM OWENS says to JOCK - I wanted to spit in your eye. You crushed me like a bug. And after 32 years you don't even remember my name. You're gonna pay for that."
When he sees himself hurt, JOCK confesses to J.R. that he had been previously married to another woman, AMANDA. The problem is that she has been committed to a mental clinic for the last 40 years and he never mentioned the subject to ELLIE. JOCK asks his son that, if anything happened, to make sure that AMANDA will be properly cared.

7/36: "THE LOST CHILD" ("EL HIJO PERDIDO")

BOBBY da la bienvenida a los nuevos vaqueros que han contratado en SOUTHFORK. Enseguida entabla amistad con el hijo de uno de ellos, un chico huérfano que siempre acompaña a su padre. Al mismo tiempo, aumenta la inquietud de PAM, embarazada y temerosa de perder el hijo que BOBBY espera con tanta ilusión, y presiona a su hermano para que olvide a J.R.:
"Estás tan consumido por el odio hacia los EWING, que no creo que sepas ya cómo amar a alguien." "He aprendido de los EWING una lección muy valiosa sobre el poder: si quieres ayudar al hombre de la calle, tienes que actuar desde una posición de fuerza." "Desde que la tienes, no has hecho más que intentar destruir a la EWING OIL." "No, he impedido que los petroleros violen la tierra." SUE ELLEN sigue alejada emocionalmente de J.R. y su bebé:
"Lo quieres todo" - le reprocha él. "El apellido EWING, los privilegios, la libertad para actuar como una golfa. Eso es todo lo que siempre quisiste." "Lo creas o no, J.R., cuando me casé contigo te amaba." "Eso pasó hace mucho tiempo. Ha habido mucha acción desde entonces" "Por ambas partes" - puntúa ella.
CLIFF revela a DIGGER que él es el padre de JOHN ROSS. Inesperadamente, PAM sufre un accidente a caballo y aborta. Entonces, confiesa a BOBBY que ha heredado la neurofibromatosis:
"Mis padres perdieron a dos hijos antes de que cumpliesen un año. Somos portadores de ella, y si tuviéramos un hijo, seguramente moriría si la heredase. Intenté decírtelo, pero estabas muy contento por la noticia. Lo siento mucho, BOBBY. No puedo darte lo único que de verdad deseas..."
La despedida de BOBBY y el pequeño LUKE resulta muy emotiva, y frustrante para PAM...
BOBBY welcomes the new cowboys hired as SOUTHFORK workers. Right away he gets close to the son of one of them, an orphan boy who always accompanies his daddy. At the same time, PAM´s anxiety increases, pregnant and afraid of losing the baby that BOBBY is so excited to have, and pushes her brother to make him let J.R. go:
"You are so consumed with hate for the EWINGS, I don't think you know how to love any more." "I learned a very valuable lesson about power from the EWINGS: if you wanna help the little guy, you have to operate from a position of strength." "Since you've had it, all you've done is try to destroy Ewing Oil." "No, I've stopped the oil companies from raping the land." SUE ELLEN keeps herself emotionally detached from J.R. and their baby:
"You want it all" - J.R. reproaches her. "You want the Ewing name, the privileges, the freedom to act like a tramp, and that's all you ever did want." "Believe it or not, J.R., I loved you when I married you." "That's a long time ago. Been a lot of action since then." "On both our sides." CLIFF reveals DIGGER that he fathered JOHN ROSS. Unexpectedly, PAM suffers a riding accident and miscarriages. Then she confesses BOBBY she is a carrier of neurofibromatosis:
"My parents lost two children before they were a year old. We carry it, and any children we have would probably die if they inherit it. I tried to tell you, but you were just so happy about this baby. I'm so sorry, Bobby. The one thing you really wanted and I can't give it to you..."
BOBBY´s farewell from little LUKE turns out to be really emotional, but so frustrating to PAM...

SOUTHFORK hierve de actividad. JOCK disfruta ayudando a preparar el gran rodeo. J.R. intenta ganarse a SUE ELLEN para que formen una pareja feliz de nuevo. DIGGER acude a SOUTHFORK a conocer a su nieto. En el momento idóneo, KRISTIN y ALAN representan una comedia ante todos. Mientras, SUE ELLEN se siente atraída por un joven vaquero que despierta los celos de J.R. Su nombre: Steven DUSTY FARLOW:
"SUE ELLEN, deberías tener cuidado - le dice KRISTIN. "Estás empezando a hacer el ridículo." "Creo que tú sola ya has creado bastante drama para una sola tarde. Nadie se fijará en mí o en lo que hago." "Olvidas a J.R." "Créeme: lo sigo intentando."
SOUTHFORK is teeming with activity. JOCK enjoys himself helping to prepare the big rodeo. J.R. is trying to win back SUE ELLEN to make a happy couple again. DIGGER comes up at SOUTHFORK to meet his grandson. At the right time, KRISTIN and ALAN play a farce in front of everyone. Meanwhile, SUE ELLEN feels attracted by a young cowboy who makes J.R. jealous. His name: Steven DUSTY FARLOW:
"SUE ELLEN, you'd better be careful - says KRISTIN. "You're beginning to make a spectacle of yourself." "I think you've supplied enough dramatics for one afternoon. Nobody's going to pay any attention to me or what I do." "You're forgetting J.R." "Believe me, I keep trying."

9/38: "MASTECTOMY" ("MASTECTOMÍA")(I)

Los temores de ELLIE se confirman cuando el médico le aconseja una rápida intervención quirúrgica para extirpar el quiste. JOCK decide sincerarse con ELLIE y contarle que estuvo casado con AMANDA. ELLIE se niega a perdonar a JOCK, pues abandonó a una mujer enferma:
"Hay mujeres que se preocupan si no son perfectas en todos los sentidos, porque podrían perder a sus maridos" - le dice PAM a BOBBY. "Quizá sea hora de que comprendan que un hombre puede amar a una mujer tanto que nada de eso importe, mientras sigan juntos" - es la respuesta de él. SUE ELLEN accede a verse con DUSTY, que asegura estar dispuesto a esperar. Antes de entrar al quirófano, ELLIE da su consentimiento para que le practiquen una mastectomía, si es necesario.
MISS ELLIE´s worst fears are confirmed when her doctor advises her to go through a fast surgery intervention to take the cyst out. JOCK decides to be sincere to ELLIE and tell her he was married to AMANDA. ELLIE refuses to forgive JOCK, since he abandoned a sick woman:
"Some women worry that if they aren't perfect in all ways, they can't keep their man" - PAM says to BOBBY. "Well, maybe it's time that... they understood that a man can love a woman so much that nothing matters, as long as they're together" - he answers. "No he conocido aún a un hombre que busque la inteligencia cuando conoce a una mujer." "Las mujeres no existimos sólo para los hombres. Existimos primero para nosotras mismas" - responde PAM a SUE ELLEN. "No si estás casada con un EWING." ELLIE mantiene una conversación sobre el pasado con DIGGER:
"Si no hubiera sido por JOCK EWING, ahora estaríamos casados. Estaría en la cima del mundo, sería rico y tendría mi propia empresa petrolífera. Sería respetado y poderoso. JOCK...lo arruinó todo entre nosotros." "No, DIGGER, tú no habrías cambiado, ni tampoco yo." LUCY se siente tan deprimida que se niega a visitar a la abuela. Inconscientemente, la culpa por enfermar y tener su misma sangre.
BOBBY and PAM are very concerned about ELLIE´s surgery since it was cancer. All of them think that the performed mastectomy, along with the shock of JOCK´s news, may affect her recovery:

LUCY considera que el abogado es el hombre ideal por haberse enfrentado con J.R. CLIFF baraja la idea de presentarse a las elecciones para el Congreso y BOBBY descubre por fin el asunto de ASIA.
The EWINGS celebrate JOCK´s birthday. In the middle of the reunion, ALAN BEAM shows up, apologizing for the rodeo´s incident. J.R. has set up the scene very carefully and faces ALAN. LUCY considers the lawyer as the ideal man for his showdown with J.R. CLIFF is thinking about running for the Congress Election and BOBBY finally discovers the ASIA affaire.

De repente, un fuerte tifón destruye la plataforma y el banquero VAUGHN LELAND no le concede más moratoria:
"Estás asustado, ¿verdad? Muy asustado" - observa SUE ELLEN. "¿Has aprendido eso de tu psiquiatra?" "No, sólo de escucharte a ti durante los últimos 8 años. Es la primera vez que noto miedo en tu voz, J.R." "¿Por qué no te vas a la cama, SUE ELLEN? Sabes que tienes mal aspecto por la mañana si no has dormido tus 8 horas." "¿Vas a visitar a mi hermana y te quedarás a dormir? Será todo un cambio para ella. No creo que jamás se haya acostado con un hombre pobre..."
La intervención de ELLIE salvará la fortuna familiar, permitiendo que se perfore una parte de las tierras del rancho. "Tal vez se culpa mía, BOBBY - confiesa JOCK. "Yo le enseñé a J.R. todo lo que sabe, le pasé la fiebre de los grandes negocios, pero nunca le enseñé cuándo debía parar." ELLIE debe actuar contra la última voluntad de su padre:
"Tal vez nunca te perdone por esto, J.R." - sentencia ELLIE.
J.R. is completely absorbed by the Asian fields drilling. He has invested all the EWING OIL capital, plus 100 million dollars loaned by a bank consortium, with the mortgaged ranch as a guarantee. Suddenly, a strong typhoon destroys the rig and banker VAUGHN LELAND does not concede any more delay:
"You're scared aren't you? Really scared" - SUE ELLEN remarks. "Is that a little insight you picked up from your psychiatrist?" "No. Just from listening to you for the past eight years. It's the first time I've truly heard fear in your voice, J.R." "Why don't you go to sleep, Sue Ellen? You know how haggard you look in the morning if you don't get your full eight hours." "Are you gonna visit my sister and spend the night? It's gonna be quite a change for her. I don't think she's ever been to bed with a poor man..."
MISS ELLIE´s intervention will save the family fortune, as she allows to drill on part of the ranch´s protected lands:
"Maybe it is my fault, BOBBY - JOCK confides. "I trained J.R., taught him everything he knows. Gave him the fever for big business. But I never taught him when to stop." ELLIE must act it against her daddy´s last will:
"I may never forgive you for this J.R." - sentences ELLIE.

"Mi padre juró que nunca nadie perforaría en su tierra, y yo también" - recuerda ELLIE. "Bueno, si pudiera hacer algo, lo haría" - contesta JOCK. "Lo que había que hacer, debió de hacerse hace años. Me refiero a J.R. Inculcaste en él el ansia por poder y dinero. No parece que nada más le importe, ni siquiera su hogar." SUE ELLEN logra vencer su pasividad y empieza a actuar como una madre con JOHN ROSS.
PAM is upset by Little JOHN and goes with him whenever she hears him cry. SUE ELLEN, on the other side, shows off an absolute indifference to him and J.R. recriminates it to her. Also, CLIFF accuses her of being using the baby as a weapon to remain in the family. JOCK threatens with selling out the Asian fields against J.R.´s opinion:
"My daddy swore there'd never be any drilling on this land. So did I" - ELLIE reminisces. "Well, if I could do anything about it, I'd do it" - answers JOCK. "Whatever needed doing, should have been done years ago. I mean J.R. You instilled in him a desire for power and money. Doesn't seem to care about anything else. Not even his home." SUE ELLEN overcomes her passivity and begins to act as a mother towards JOHN ROSS.

ELLIE spends a whole day listening to GARY´s favorite record, as a way to celebrate his birthday. They don´t know yet but GARY is living with VALENE in DALLAS and make plans to re-marry:
"She's desperate to see you, GARY" - VAL says about ELLIE. "I'm sorry, VALENE. She'd just drag me right back into that family. She's a lady who thinks family. She can't think any other way." "Quizá no sea buena idea dejar a BOBBY solo demasiado tiempo por la noche. Hasta que te conoció, él era el semental de Dallas. Aún lo es, por lo que sé." "A lo mejor no te has enterado, J.R., pero BOBBY ya no ejerce de semental, se retiró cuando nos casamos. Te dejó ese título a ti, Por supuesto, y según he oído, eso no quiere decir que puedas ser digno de él." "Cuando quieras averiguarlo, podemos quedar un día." "No te molestes, J.R. Aunque no estuviera casada con BOBBY, no serías lo bastante hombre." "Soy lo bastante hombre para engendrar un hijo heredero con SUE ELLEN. Algo que tú y BOBBY parecéis incapaces de hacer." One night, BOBBY gets a nice surprise when he finds SUE ELLEN caring about Little JOHN. At the same time, PAM is beginning to dedicate too much attention to her work at The Store. One day J.R. uses this fact to piss PAM off:
"Might not be a good idea to leave BOBBY too much alone at night. Until he met you, he was the stud in Dallas. Might still be, for all I know." "Maybe you haven't heard, J.R., BOBBY's not standing at stud anymore. He retired when we got married. He left the field wide open for you. Of course, from what I hear, that still leaves the field wide open." "Anytime you wanna find out, it can be easily arranged." "Don't bother, J.R. Even if I weren't married to Bobby, you aren't man enough." "I was certainly man enough for me and Sue Ellen to produce a son and heir. Something which you and Bobby seem incapable of." "Sue Ellen and Cliff!" - PAM eventually adds. To make things worse, J.R. manages to get her sister-in-law promoted at the shop and her boss and friend LIZ, sent to Houston. RAY and DONNA meet again and he proposes to her:
"I do love you. And I wanna marry you" - DONNA responds. "But not now. Because it is too soon. It's just something that I feel like I owe SAM. If you and I were to get married now there are people out there that would say that SAM had been a fool to marry me. I don't care what they say about me but I won't have that done to SAM's memory." "That house of mine is gonna be ready in six months" - RAY adds. "The day it's ready we're getting married. That's all the time I'm willing to give SAM and his memory."

KRISTIN has just discovered the relationship between LUCY and ALAN, as well as ALAN´s two-sided game, working for CLIFF, but under J.R.´s orders:
"You know how important I am to J.R." - says ALAN. "For now. You're replaceable." "What's replaceable is a secretary who does most of her work on her back." ALAN thinks to have found a gold mine in LUCY, who would rather not rush in. 'I'm not that stupid - says J.R. to ALAN, "and you're surely not that smart. Now don't lie to me, boy." "You want the truth? LUCY and I have been spending a lot of time together. And we're very much in love. She's pretty. And intelligent. And nice." "And rich. Don't forget rich." - J.R. adds. "If we can make LUCY leave SOUTHFORK, her father will never come around here" - schemes J.R. When he reports his parents about this relationship, LUCY feels self-assured and announces they are to be married.

CLIFF se da cuenta de que no tiene fondos para seguir con la campaña y decide renunciar. Ignora que J.R. intrigó para favorecer su candidatura y así hacerle dimitir del DCT. Cuando lo descubre, acusa de ello a J.R. en público:
"Me sorprende que no seas mejor perdedor dada la experiencia que tienes" - le dice J.R. "Quiero que sepas que acabaré contigo" "¿No lo sabes, CLIFF? Hay que ser un hombre para tratar con alguien como yo." Desesperado por el fracaso, un borracho DIGGER confiesa a una periodista que CLIFF es el padre del pequeño JOHN.
"Nosotros nos encargaremos de CLIFF BARNES" - asegura el patriarca. "Nadie habla mal de los EWING sin recibir su merecido. Una cosa es segura: no podemos matarlo. Pero te garantizo que antes de que hayamos acabado con él en los tribunales, deseará no habernos provocado." Por su parte, J.R. amenaza a SUE ELLEN:
"Si esa prueba me avergüenza públicamente y se demuestra que BARNES es el padre de ese niño, conseguiré el divorcio más rápido de la historia de Tejas, y tú, querida, acabarás en la calle antes que darte un centavo." Cuando se llevan a cabo los análisis de sangre pertinentes, el matrimonio EWING se queda estupefacto: J.R. es el padre. A escondidas, J.R. sube al cuarto de su hijo y lo abraza por 1ª vez, emocionado.
CLIFF realizes that he has no funds left to keep on with his campaign and decides to resign. He ignores that J.R. schemes to ease his nomination and thus taking him out of O.L.M. When he finds it out, he accuses J.R. of it publicly:
"I'm amazed you're not a better loser after all the experience you've had" - says J.R. "I just want you to know, J.R., I'm gonna nail you!" "Haven't you noticed? You've got to be a man to play in my league." Desperate by his failure, a drunk DIGGER confesses a journalist that CLIFF is the father of Little JOHN:
"We'll take care of CLIFF BARNES - the patriarch assures. "Nobody is gonna talk about the Ewings and get away with it. I know one thing for sure: we can't kill him. But I'll guarantee you one thing: before we get through suing him, he'll wish that he'd never messed with us". From his part, J.R threatens SUE ELLEN:
"If these tests embarrass me publicly, and it's proven that Cliff Barnes is the father of that child, I am gonna get the quickest divorce in the history of the state of Texas. And you, my dear, can walk the streets before I'll give you a dime." When the proper blood analysis is performed, the EWING marriage is astonished: J.R. turns out to be his father. By himself, J.R. goes into his son´s room and holds him for the first time, excited.

"SAM solía decir que ella era la verdadera política de la familia. Si decidiera presentarse a un cargo público, ganaría por mayoría. Y yo lo creo de verdad. Sí, con todo el dinero que le ha dejado y su belleza, no hay nada en el mundo que no pueda tener. Por eso no puedo entender que tú pienses que será feliz viviendo en una casucha en SOUTHFORK, descalza, embarazada y en la cocina..." PAMELA sale en viaje de negocios a PARÍS con su jefe HARRISON PAGE. En el aeropuerto, ve cómo BOBBY se reencuentra con su antigua novia JENNA WADE:
"NALDO ha resultado ser un padre bastante bueno" - explica JENNA sobre su ex marido - "CHARLIE pasó el verano pasado con él en ROMA. Mi trabajo es una de las mejores cosas que me han pasado. Me ha convertido en una mujer independiente. Me ha salvado de los Naldos de este mundo. ¿Te dijo PAM que de vez en cuando nos encontramos? Ella es la jefa de compras de la Tienda, y yo, la editora de modas de la revista "High Style". Hubiera sido un milagro si hubiésemos conseguido evitarnos. Supongo que resistimos la tentación de sacarnos los ojos." JENNA no quiere precipitarse y le pide que aclare las cosas con PAM.
"Hoy no tengo ningún motivo para volver a casa..." - asegura BOBBY.
SUE ELLEN´s and DUSTY´s romance is more and more passionate and she relies greatly on the cowboy. Her absences make J.R. jealous since she gives no explanations. J.R. tries to make RAY and DONNA apart:
"SAM used to say that she was the real politician in the family. If she ever decided to run for public office, she'd win by a landslide. And I believe it, I really do. With all that loot he left her and her looks, there's just about nothing in the world she couldn't have. Which is why it just beats hell out of me how you think she's gonna be happy living in a cabin on Southfork, barefoot, pregnant and in the kitchen..." PAMELA flies to PARIS on a business trip with her boss HARRISON PAGE. At the Airport, she sees BOBBY reunited with his old flame JENNA WADE.
"NALDO's turning out to be a pretty good father. CHARLIE spent all last summer with him in Rome. My job is one of the best things that ever happened to me. Turned me into an independent woman. Saved me from the Naldos of this world. PAM ever tell you we run into each other every now and then? She, head buyer for The Store, and me, fashion editor of High Style magazine? Would've been a miracle if we had managed to avoid one another. I guess we just resist the temptation to scratch each other's eyes out." JENNA does not want to push things and asks him to make things clear with PAM.
"I think I have no reason to go home tonight..." - assures BOBBY.

Finalmente, BOBBY Y JENNA NO pasan la noche juntos. Cuando PAM vuelve de PARÍS, JENNA la interroga sobre sus sentimientos hacia BOBBY:
"Porque si tú no le quieres, yo sí" - le dice ella. "¿No te interesa conservar a tu marido? No estamos en la escuela, PAM. Las dos sabemos que los hombres como BOBBY escasean." DUSTY presiona a SUE ELLEN para que abandone a J.R. Le pide a su marido el divorcio, pero él sólo accede a cambio de dejar al pequeño JOHN con él:
"Eres una borracha y una ramera. Y con tu historial no habrá juez en el estado de Tejas que te ceda su custodia." "No puedes decirlo en serio. No me quitarías a mi hijo..." - insinúa ella. "Mi hijo" - repite J.R. con crueldad. DONNA se enfrenta a J.R.:
"¿Cómo puedes saber siempre exactamente lo que hay que hacer para hacer daño, y siempre lo haces con un instinto tan certero? Si no te conociera mejor, juraría que has hecho un pacto con el diablo..." "¿Intentas halagarme o insultarme? No consigo averiguarlo." "Yo te prometo una cosa - asegura con firmeza ella - DAVE y yo vamos a retomarlo donde lo dejó CLIFF y te destruiremos." Mientras, PAM confiesa a BOBBY:
"Me siento tan inútil por no poder darte un hijo, que a veces quisiera que me abandonases...y otras pienso que me moriría sin ti." La pareja se reconcilia prometiéndose mutuamente que resolverán sus problemas juntos. SUE ELLEN se ve obligada a dar por terminada su aventura con DUSTY:
"Me ha dicho que me concedería el divorcio, pero se quedará con mi hijo" - explica SUE ELLEN. "Le llevaremos a juicio. Yo tengo suficiente dinero para luchar contra él y ganar." "Me ingresaron por alcoholismo. ¿Qué juez me dejará quedarme con mi hijo? J.R. tiene informes de detectives, sobre CLIFF y yo. No puedo abandonar a mi hijo, ni siquiera por ti. Él siempre ha ganado, y siempre lo hará." Cuando vuelve a casa, J.R. le dice con desprecio:
"Sabía que no tendrías las agallas de irte."
Finally, BOBBY and JENNA do NOT spend the night together. When PAM returns from PARIS, JENNA questions her about her feelings to BOBBY.
"Because if you don´t want him, I do" - she says. "Aren't you interested in keeping your husband? We're not schoolgirls, Pam. We both know that men like Bobby don't grow on trees." DUSTY pushes SUE ELLEN to leave J.R. She asks her husband for a divorce, but J.R. only will agree if she leaves Little JOHN with him:
"You're a drunk. And a tramp. And with your history, there isn't a court in the State of Texas that would let you have him." "You can't be serious. You couldn't take my son." "My son" - he remarks with cruelty. Therefore, SUE ELLEN feels obligated to end her romance with DUSTY. DONNA confronts J.R.:
"How is it you always know exactly what to do to cause the most harm, and you always do it with such unerring instinct? If I didn't know better, I'd swear you made a pact with the Devil!" "Are you trying to flatter me or insult me? I can't make out which." "I can promise you this - assures DONNA firmly - DAVE and I are gonna take up where CLIFF left off. We'll destroy you!" Meanwhile, PAM confides to BOBBY:
"I feel so unuseful for not being able to give you a son, that sometimes I wish you would leave me...other times I think I'd die without you." The couple reconciles and promises each other they will solve their problems out together. SUE ELLEN is obligated to end her affair with DUSTY:
"He said he'd give me a divorce, but he'll keep my baby" - SUE ELLEN tells him. "We'll fight him. I've got enough money to fight him and win." "I've been hospitalized for alcoholism. What judge is gonna let me have my baby? J.R. has reports, detective reports, about CLIFF and me. I can't leave my baby not even for you. He has to win, and he always will." When she comes home, J.R. says to her with contempt:
"I knew you'd never have the guts to go."

Empeñado en expulsar del rancho a LUCY, J.R. presiona a ALAN para que se case con LUCY a cambio de abrirle un bufete en Chicago. Al mismo tiempo, no ve con buenos ojos los nuevos lazos que unen a RAY y DONNA. Esta ya ha enviudado e intenta que el capataz vaya integrándose en su círculo. La influencia de J.R. es decisiva para que RAY vuelva a sentirse inferior ante ella y corte la relación. Además, J.R. no ve con buenos ojos que BOBBY ayude a CLIFF a encontrar otro empleo:
"Está derrotado y hundido. No podemos hacerle nada más, hemos ganado. ¿Qué más necesitamos?" "Sólo descansaré cuando esté bajo tierra, y aún entonces, no me extrañaría que volviera y nos persiguiera..." - le dice J.R. a BOBBY. Cuando JOCK ofrece a ALAN un bufete en DALLAS, J.R. se enfurece e intenta anular el noviazgo. Para ello, acude a BETTY LOU, la anterior novia de ALAN, que ha seguido viéndose con él, a pesar de LUCY:
"¿Qué es lo que tiene esa víbora, después de todo?" - le dice él a BETTY LOU. "Puedo comprender que una tonta como mi sobrina vaya tras un parlanchín como él, pero no una joven hermosa e inteligente como usted. ALAN BEAM es un embustero y un traidor. Sea lo que sea lo que le ha prometido, no se lo dará. Tal como yo lo veo, hay dos formas de acabar con cancelar esa boda: con usted o sin usted."
Bent on throwing LUCY off the ranch, J.R. pulls on ALAN to marry LUCY offering him a new firm in Chicago. At the same time, he does not consider the new links between RAY and DONNA as good news. She is a widower now and is trying to let the foreman fit in her circle. J.R.´s influence is final to make RAY feel inferior in her eyes again and ends their relationship. Besides, J.R. doesn´t want BOBBY to help CLIFF to find another job:
"He is defanged and declawed and we can't do anything more to him. We've won. He's defeated. What more do we need?" "The only time he's gonna be out of our hair is when he's six feet under and then I wouldn't trust him not to come back and haunt us!" - says J.R. to BOBBY. When JOCK offers ALAN a firm in DALLAS, J.R. gets angry and tries to cancel the wedding. So he turns to BETTY LOU, ALAN´s former girlfriend, who has been dating him in spite of LUCY:
"What does that little snake got, anyway? I can understand a nitwit like my niece going for that line of blabber, but...not a pretty, intelligent girl like you. ALAN BEAM is a liar and a cheat. And whatever he's promised you, he's not gonna deliver. So the way I look at it, I got two ways of breaking up this marriage: with you or without you."

SUE ELLEN ha preparado un plan para conseguir el divorcio. Para ello se esfuerza por presentarse ante todos como una esposa perfecta y una madre devota, para que todos estén a su favor en el juicio. Tampoco se ha olvidado de poner a un detective que siga a J.R. de noche...Pero este no tarda en descubrir sus intenciones, utilizando a KRISTIN para hacer creer a la familia que SUE ELLEN ha vuelto al alcohol:
"Si esto funciona" - exige KRISTIN - , "quiero que te divorcies de SUE ELLEN. Quiero convertirme en la esposa de J.R. EWING." A lo que él responde: "No tenemos que precipitarnos con eso. Te lo prometo. Mañana, llama a SUE ELLEN y queda con ella para comer..." Para evitar sospechas, KRISTIN confiesa a su hermana su relación con J.R.:
"Me he comportado de forma horrible. He hecho todo lo que he podido para separaros. Nos hicimos amantes. Y estoy avergonzada. En la fiesta de vuestro aniversario, me di cuenta de lo mal que te he tratado. Me marcho de Dallas, vuelvo a la universidad en California. Pero, antes de irme, tenía que verte para intentar hacer las paces." SUE ELLEN parece creerla al decirle: "Eres muy inteligente, KRISTIN. Yo era mucho mayor que tú cuando descubrí que estaba viviendo los sueños de mamá." Cuando empiezan a sospechar que ha vuelto a beber, ella visita a su psiquiatra:
"Usted no cree nada de esto, ¿verdad, Dr. ELBY?" - pregunta SUE ELLEN a su psiquiatra. "Que mi marido piensa internarme, que mi hermanita podría estar ayudándole, que tengo miedo de quedarme con J.R. y aún más miedo de abandonarle." "Creo que su marido es capaz de hacer muchas más cosas que la mayoría." Mientras, ALAN intenta convencer a KRISTIN para que se una a él contra J.R.:
"¿Y qué sacaría yo con eso?" - pregunta ella. "¿La venganza no significa nada para ti?" "No si no viene acompañada de un beneficio." "Empiezo a ver lo que a J.R. le gusta de ti". Finalmente, SUE ELLEN reacciona con violencia cuando muestra los informes del detective, falseados por J.R.
SUE ELLEN has set up a plan to get a divorce. So she tries her best to look like the perfect wife and devoted mother before everybody, thus having all of them on her behalf at court. Neither she has forgotten to hire a detective to follow J.R. at night...But he soon discovers her intentions and use KRISTIN to make the family believe that SUE ELLEN is off the wagon again:
"If this works" - she demands, - "I want you to divorce SUE ELLEN. I want to be Mrs. J.R. EWING." To which he answers: "We don't have to rush into that. You got it. Now, tomorrow, I want you to call SUE ELLEN and ask her to come out and have lunch with you." To avoid any suspicions, KRISTIN confesses her affair with J.R. to her sister:
"I've been terrible. I've done everything I could to break you and J.R. up. We became lovers. And I'm truly ashamed. When I saw you and J.R. together at your anniversary party, I realized just how dreadful I've been. So I'm leaving Dallas, SUE ELLEN. I'm going to school in California. But before I left, I had to see you, to try and make it up to you." SUE ELLEN seems to believe her when she says: "You are so smart, KRISTIN. I was much older than you before I figured out I was just living Mama's dreams." When they begin to believe she´s drinking again, she visits her psychiatrist:
"You don't believe most of this, do you, Dr. ELBY?" - SUE ELLEN asks her psychiatrist. "That my husband is planning to commit me. That my little sister may be helping him. That I'm afraid to stay with J.R. And even more afraid to leave him.!" "I believe that your husband is capable of many things that most people aren't." Meanwhile, ALAN tries to convince KRISTIN to join him in his plot against J.R.:
"What good would that do to me?" - she asks. "Doesn't revenge mean anything to you?" "Not if there's no profit in it." "Well, I'm beginning to see what J.R. liked about you." Finally, SUE ELLEN´s reaction is violent when she shows the detective´s reports, faked by J.R.

CLIFF es nombrado ayudante del fiscal del distrito y, apenas toma posesión, se vuelca en aclarar el caso de SOUTHFORK: se ha encontrado un cadáver en las tierras donde RAY está construyendo su casa. CLIFF averigua que se trata de un asesinato cometido mucho tiempo antes:
"Lo sabía - salta J.R. "Ese hombre no abandona. Se encuentra el cadáver de un viejo indeseable en SOUTHFORK y él va a conseguir que parezca el caso más importante desde Bonnie y Clyde." SUE ELLEN busca el apoyo de BOBBY al sentirse presionada por J.R.:
"Tú no piensas que haya empezado a beber otra vez, ¿verdad? Necesito tener a alguien de mi parte. J.R. ha hecho todo lo que ha podido para volver a internarme en aquel sanatorio." "¿Por qué? Todo parecía ir bien entre vosotros" - pregunta BOBBY. "Sólo eran apariencias. Quería ser la esposa perfecta para todos para que olvidasen mi pasado e intentar conseguir la custodia del pequeño JOHN. Quiero divorciarme." "¿J.R. está intentando que parezca que has vuelto a beber? Si crees que tienes que dejar a J.R., hazlo. Pero abiertamente, sin seguir su juego. No te precipites a hacer nada. Vas a tener que hacer una elección y arriesgarte". Pero ella vuelve a beber cuando se entera de que DUSTY ha sido dado por muerto en un accidente aéreo, cuando iba a verla. ELLIE descubre que un colaborador suyo se siente cada vez más atraído por ella, pero continúa viéndole:
"Amor por la tierra, por los espacios abiertos. Me dijiste que los pozos de petróleo de JOCK arruinaron el perfil del terreno. Tu padre le odiaba por eso." "Mi padre odiaba a todos los petroleros, no sólo a JOCK. Pero papá tenía un apego por la tierra que sólo conoce un ranchero." "¿O la hija de un ranchero?" "Sí" - responde ELLIE a MATT con una sonrisa. Finalmente, JOCK es detenido como presunto asesino de HUTCH McKINNEY, el vaquero cuyo cadáver se encontró.
CLIFF is named the D.A.´s Assistant and, as soon as he takes over, he devotes himself to the SOUTHFORK case: a corpse has been found under the lands where RAY is building up his house. CLIFF learns that it is a murder committed many years ago:
"I knew it!" - says J.R. "That man just won't quit. An old derelict's body is found on Southfork, and he's gonna make it look like the biggest case since Bonnie and Clyde." SUE ELLEN seeks for BOBBY´s support when she feels pressured by J.R.:
"You don't really believe that I've started drinking again, do you? I need someone on my side. J.R. has done everything he can to put me back in that sanitarium." "Why? Everything's been going so well between you two" - BOBBY asks. "No, it hasn't. I just made it seem that way. I wanted to be the perfect wife so everyone would forget my past. To try to get custody of little John. I want a divorce." "You're telling me you're not drinking and J.R.'s trying to make you look like a drunk? If you feel you have to leave J.R., then do it. But do it in the open, don't try and play his game, honey. And don't rush into anything. That's a choice you may have to make. You're gonna have to take your chances." But she drinks again when she knows that DUSTY is presumably dead due to a plane accident, on his way to meet her. ELLIE discovers that one of his collaborators is more and more attracted to her, but she continues meeting him:
"Love of the land, open space. You told me Jock's oil wells ruined the country's line. Your daddy hated him for that." "My daddy hated all oilmen. Not just Jock. But daddy had a feeling for the land that only a rancher could know." "Or a rancher's daughter?" "Yes." - ELLIE answers with a smile on her face. Eventually, JOCK is arrested as the presumed murderer of HUTCH McKINNEY, the cowboy whose corpse had been found.

23/52: "JOCK´S TRIAL" (II)

A pesar de que el proceso de JOCK acapara la atención de los EWING, otros miembros de la familia tienen sus propios problemas: PAM espera un fatal desenlace en la enfermedad del viejo DIGGER. JOCK ha contratado para su defensa al mejor abogado criminalista de la Unión, SCOTTY DEMEREST. Teme que las pruebas de CLIFF le incriminen peligrosamente:
"Si tu padre va a la cárcel" - SUE ELLEN insinúa a J.R. - , entonces tú volverás a dirigir la EWING OIL. ¿Intentas decirme que no estás de parte de CLIFF?" "Después de 9 años de matrimonio, aún no me conoces bien, ¿verdad?" - contesta él. Más tarde, ella se ausenta de una de las sesiones del juicio contra JOCK para echar un trago:
"¿Qué haces aquí, en mitad de los juzgados, bebiendo?" "¿No es eso lo que siempre has querido? Deberías estar increíblemente feliz." "Usa este spray. Mi padre ya tiene bastantes problemas sin que estés tú sentada en la sala oliendo como una destilería..."
Pero es justo su mayor enemigo, DIGGER, quien echará luz sobre el asunto: antes de morir, DIGGER confiesa que él mató al vaquero, que resultó ser el verdadero padre de PAM.
Though JOCK´s trial recalls the attention of the EWINGS, other members of the family have their own problems: PAM expects a fatal conclusion for the sickness of old DIGGER. JOCK has hired the best criminal lawyer in the Union to defend him, SCOTTY DEMEREST. He fears that CLIFF´s proofs might incriminate him dangerously:
"If your daddy goes to jail - SUE ELLEN hints to J.R.-, "then you'll be in charge of EWING OIL again. Are you trying to tell me you're not on CLIFF BARNES' side?" "After nine years of marriage you still don't know much about me, do you?" - he answers. Later she walks out of one of the sessions of JOCK´s trial to have a drink:
"What are you doing right here in the middle of the courthouse, drinking?" "Isn't that what you've always wanted? You should be supremely happy." Here, use this mouth spray. My daddy's in enough trouble without you sitting in the courtroom smelling like a distillery." But just his worst enemy, DIGGER, is the one who will clear things up: before dying, DIGGER confesses to having killed that cowboy, who turned out to be PAM's real father.

La muerte de DIGGER supone un fuerte golpe para PAMELA, obsesionada con buscar la identidad que ha perdido con el suceso:
"Todos podemos ver que se está desmoronando, lentamente pero sin remedio. ¿Y quién puede culparla? Quiero decir, que descubre que su padre DIGGER BARNES no es de su familia, y que su verdadero padre es un vaquero vagabundo y ladrón. Y que su madre es una ramera. ¿Quién podría odiar a una mujercita como esa, eh?"
J.R. recibe preocupantes noticias sobre los pozos EWING en ASIA: van a ser nacionalizados como consecuencia de una revolución. Para evitar un descalabro económico, se desprende de la mayor parte de las acciones y se las vende al cártel y a VAUGHN LELAND. SUE ELLEN intenta olvidar la muerte de DUSTY por medio del alcohol:
"Debes estar tramando algo maquiavélico" - adivina al observar a J.R. "No te he visto tan nervioso desde que casi perdiste SOUTHFORK..."
Mientras, JOCK y su esposa deciden visitar a AMANDA en el sanatorio de COLORADO donde se halla internada. Pero AMANDA no reconoce a JOCK...hasta que repara en BOBBY. Cuando JOCK vuelve a DALLAS y se entera de lo ocurrido, brama:
"¿Cuánto hemos perdido?"
"Tal como están las cosas, papá, hemos hecho el negocio del siglo...", contesta J.R.
DIGGER´s death means a big shock to PAMELA, now obsessed with finding the identity she has lost:
"Everybody can see that she's cracking up. Slowly and surely. And who can blame her? I mean, she finds out that her daddy, DIGGER BARNES is no relation at all and her real father is a saddle tramp and a thief. And her mother's a whore! Now who could find it in their heart to hate, that poor little girl, huh?"
J.R. gets upsetting news about the EWING fields in ASIA: they are going to be nationalized due to a revolution. In order to avoid an economic breakdown, he sells out most of his shares to the Cartel and VAUGHN LELAND. SUE ELLEN is trying to forget DUSTY´s death through drinking:
"You must be up to something real nasty" - she guesses by watching J.R. "I haven't seen you look so nervous since you almost lost SOUTHFORK."
Meanwhile, JOCK and his wife decide to visit AMANDA at the COLORADO sanitarium where she was committed. But AMANDA cannot recognize JOCK...until he notices BOBBY. When JOCK returns to DALLAS and learns what happened, he brawls:
"How much did we lose?" "Well, Daddy, the way I look at it, we just made ourselves a killing", answers J.R.

25/54: "A HOUSE DIVIDED" ("UNA FAMILIA DIVIDIDA")

La noticia de la nacionalización de los pozos asiáticos conmociona la ciudad de DALLAS. Durante una rueda de prensa en la EWING OIL, J.R. asegura que NO ESTÁN ARRUINADOS. Cuando llega BOBBY, JOCK y J.R. le informan que este había vendido casi todos los pozos al cártel y al banquero LELAND. Para empeorar las cosas, uno de los petroleros del cártel, SETH STONE, se ha suicidado esa mañana. Su viuda MARILEE no deja de llamar a las oficinas, pero J.R. no acepta las llamadas. JORDAN LEE y VAUGHN LELAND amenazan a J.R. con vengarse de él. Una vez solos, BOBBY acusa a J.R. de haber estafado al cártel, pero él afirma que no lo sabía. Una vez a solas, J.R. le dice a JOCK:
"Bobby es débil, papá. Ya no habla como un auténtico EWING..." Mientras, ALAN muestra a KRISTIN los titulares de prensa: "Colapso del Imperio de la Ewing Oil". La pareja empieza a maquinar un plan para chantajear a J.R. a través de su contacto en Asia. En Southfork, BOBBY se entera de que PAM ha partido hacia Corpus Christie en busca de información sobre su madre. Poco después, una SUE ELLEN con resaca promete a BOBBY que nunca volverá a tomar una copa...En la Ewing Oil, J.R. descubre la estratagema de KRISTIN. Ajena a todo esto, LUCY está saliendo con uno de sus profesores, GREG FORRESTER. Hasta ahora, ha sido una relación platónica, pero ella quiere cambiar eso. Lo que ignora es que el tal FORRESTER tiene esposa y un hijo pequeño. SUE ELLEN confiesa al Dr. ELBY que no recuerda el incidente del día anterior, con los vaqueros. El psiquiatra se percata de que ahora ella confía más en BOBBY que en sí misma. J.R. visita a KRISTIN y le sugiere que se marche a Río de Janeiro:
"No me asustas, J.R." "Hace falta cerebro para asustarse, cariño, pero aún sin él, empieza a asustarte..." En Corpus Christie, a unos 600 kms de DALLAS, PAM visita la casa que habitó su familia en otro tiempo. Casualmente descubre que se marcharon de la ciudad poco después de nacer ella. Más tarde, averigua que REBECCA NO falleció en C.C. y decide volver a DALLAS, segura de que sigue viva. Esa noche, J.R. Y SUE ELLEN entablan un duelo verbal del que ella se cree vencedora, segura de que BOBBY la ayudará:
"Dime, J.R., ¿con que mujerzuela vas a pasar la noche?" - le pregunta cuando lo ve salir. "¿Eso qué importa? Sea quien sea, será más interesante que la que estoy viendo..." Viéndose humillada de nuevo por J.R., destroza todo lo que ve y, en un cajón, halla el revólver de J.R. Al día siguiente, CLIFF comunica a los hermanos EWING que un antiguo documento de DIGGER le convierte en su socio en el campo EWING 23. Este campo había sido abierto recientemente por BOBBY y resulta muy productivo. Pero J.R. no duda en ordenar que se cierre en el acto, ante la mirada impotente de BOBBY Y CLIFF. PAM sólo piensa en encontrar a su madre aunque tenga que dejar su trabajo en la Tienda. ALAN es llevado por la fuerza a la oficina de J.R. y acusado de violación de una menor...que no existe. En SOUTHFORK, BOBBY discute con JOCK Y J.R. por el EWING 23. Minutos después, BOBBY ya ha tomado su decisión: marcharse de SOUTHFORK al día siguiente.
Por la mañana, tanto JOCK como ELLIE intentan disuadirle pero él se muestra firme en su postura. SUE ELLEN, que ha sido testigo de la escena, culpa a J.R. de todo. La respuesta de él es fulminante: "Cuanto antes te interne en un sanatorio, mucho mejor para todos." El sargento McSween irrumpe en el apartamento de KRISTIN. La acusa de prostitución y le da 24 horas para dejar la ciudad:
"Le mataré. Juro que le mataré" - dice ella cuando el policía se ha marchado. "Ponte a la cola: hay muchos antes de ti." - añade ALAN. VAUGHN llama a J.R. para amenazarle por última vez...En SOUTHFORK, SUE ELLEN mira fijamente el revólver, lo coge y lo mete en su bolso...En el cementerio, CLIFF habla a la tumba de DIGGER, y SUE ELLEN confiesa mientras al Dr. ELBY que no puede dejar que otra persona haga lo que ella tiene que hacer:
"¿No lo ve? Alguien debe pararle. Le enseñará a mi hijo a ser como él y todo continuará..." Poco después, J.R. recibe en la oficina una misteriosa llamada de alguien que cuelga al oír su voz. Unos segundos más tarde, se abre el ascensor, entra alguien sigilosamente, comprueba que no están las secretarias y se dirige al despacho de J.R. Cuando este oye unos ruidos, sale del despacho para ver de quién se trata pero...en ese momento, dos disparos lo dejan inconsciente en el suelo, entre la vida y la muerte.
The Asian fields nationalization news causes a commotion all over the town of DALLAS. During a press conference at EWING OIL, J.R. assures THEY ARE NOT RUINED. When BOBBY comes, JOCK and J.R. tell him that the latter had sold out almost every field to the Cartel and Banker LELAND. To worsen things, one of the Cartel members, SETH STONE, jumped off to death that morning. His widow MARILEE keeps calling at the offices, but J.R. rejects the calls. JORDAN LEE and VAUGHN LELAND threatens J.R. with a vengeance. Once alone, BOBBY accuses J.R. of conning the Cartel, but he assures he didn´t know. When BOBBY leaves, J.R. tells JOCK:
"Bobby's getting weak, Daddy. Just plain weak. Doesn't hardly sound like a Ewing anymore..." Meanwhile, ALAN shows KRISTIN the press headlines: "Ewing Empire Collapses". The pair begins to plot something to blackmail J.R. through his Asian connection. At Southfork, BOBBY learns that PAM is gone to Corpus Christie searching for information about her mother. Shortly after, a SUE ELLEN with hangover promises BOBBY she´ll never have a drink again...At Ewing Oil, J.R. discovers KRISTIN´s schemes. Unaware of all this, LUCY is dating one of her professors, GREG FORRESTER. So far it has been a platonic relationship, but she wants to change that. What she ignores is that FORRESTER has a wife and a baby. SUE ELLEN confesses Dr. ELBY that she does not remember the previous day´s incident at the cowboy bar. The psychiatrist realizes that she trusts BOBBY rather than herself. J.R. visits KRISTIN and suggests her to leave for Rio de Janeiro:
"You can't scare me, J.R." "It takes brains to know when to be scared, honey. And since that's something in short supply around here, I'm gonna help you: now is the time to be scared." At Corpus Christie, about 600 km. away from DALLAS, PAM visits the house her family lived in decades ago. By chance, she finds out that they left town shortly after she was born. Later on, she learns that REBECCA DID NOT die in C.C. and decides to return to DALLAS, sure that she still is alive. That night, J.R. and SUE ELLEN start a verbal fight in which she feels she´s the winner, sure that BOBBY will help her:
"Tell me, J.R., which slut are you going to stay with tonight?" - she asks him when sees him walking out. "What difference does it make? Whoever it is has got to be more interesting than the slut I'm looking at right now..." She feels humiliated by J.R. again, and messes everything up there and finds in a drawer...J.R.´s gun. Next day CLIFF tells the EWING brothers that an old document of DIGGER´s makes him their associate at the EWING 23. This field had been recently opened by BOBBY and has become very productive. But J.R. does not hesitate to order its immediate closing, before CLIFF´s angry look. PAM only thinks of finding her mother even if she has to quit at The Store. ALAN is taken to J.R.´s office and accused of raping a minor...who does not really exist. At SOUTHFORK, BOBBY argues with JOCK and J.R. for EWING 23. Minutes later, BOBBY has made his mind: leaving in the morning.
Next morning, both JOCK and ELLIE try to talk him out of leaving but he is firmly determined to do it. SUE ELLEN, who has witnessed the scene, blames J.R. for everything. His answer is a bombshell: "The sooner we have you put away in that sanitarium, the better off you can be." Sergeant McSween calls on KRISTIN´s apartment. He accuses her of prostitution and gives her 24 hours to quit town:
"I'll kill him. I swear I'll kill him" - she says once the cops are gone. "Take a number. There are a few of us ahead of you" - ALAN adds. VAUGHN phones J.R. to make him the last threat. At SOUTHFORK, SUE ELLEN stares at the gun for a long time, picks it up and puts it into her purse...At the cemetery, CLIFF talks to DIGGER's tombstone, while SUE ELLEN confesses Dr. ELBY that she can´t rely on anyone else to do what she has to do:
"Don't you see? He's gotta be stopped. He's gonna teach my son to be just like he is and it's gonna go on and on and on!" Shortly after, J.R. gets a mysterious call at his office from someone who hangs off just after hearing his voice. A few minutes later, the elevator opens its doors, somebody slips into the office, checks if the secretaries are out and goes straight to J.R.´s office. When J.R. hears a noise, comes out of his office to see who it is, but then, two gunshots let him unconscious on the ground, between life and death.
