PATRICK DUFFY

NACIÓ EL 17 DE MARZO de 1949 en Boulder, un pueblecito de MONTANA y vivió en SEATTLE desde los 12 años. Tenía 2 ideas: hacerse atleta profesional o, sencillamente, actor. En la escuela superior, tuvo que elegir y se quedó con el Arte. Ingresó en la Escuela de Arte Dramático de NUEYA YORK, donde cursó estudios hasta obtener el título de actor residente de la Universidad de SEATTLE. A partir de entonces, interpretó diversos papeles secundarios en obras de teatro regional, principalmente en la zona noroeste del Pacífico, donde él creció, hasta que decidió trasladarse a CALIFORNIA: “Llegué a Hollywood con el propósito firme de triunfar, pero tuve que pasar antes 4 años conduciendo un camión y construyendo casas flotantes.”

Una temporada en el papel principal de la serie EL HOMBRE DE ATLANTIS fue suficiente para lanzarle al estrellato, pero la abandonó antes de quedar encasillado. En 1972, había conocido a una bailarina de ballet llamada CARLYN ROSSER tras haber radiado el espectáculo de ballet en que ella intervenía. En 1974, contrajeron matrimonio en un templo budista, religión a la que su esposa le introdujo. Poco después, se mudaron a N.Y. y luego a HOLLYWOOD, donde nacerían sus 2 hijos, PADRAIC y CONNOR.

Born on March 17, 1949 in Boulder, a small town in MONTANA, and raised in SEATTLE since he was 12 years old. He had two ideas: becoming a professional athlete or simply an actor. At high school, he had to choose and chose up, until he decided to move to CALIFORNIA: "I arrived at Hollywood very determined to succeed but I had to spend four years driving a truck and building floating houses before I made it."

A one-season starring role on the show THE MAN FROM ATLANTIS was enough to launch out his career but he quit before to get typed. In 1972, he had met a ballet dancer called CARLYN ROSSER after broadcasting the ballet show she had been in. Two years later they got married in a Buddhist temple, since his wife had introduced him to this religion. Afterwards, they moved to N.Y. and then to HOLLYWOOD, where their two sons were born, PADRAIC and CONNOR.

El papel de BOBBY EWING en DALLAS le reportó prestigio, dinero y popularidad, que no dudó en aprovechar para ampliar horizontes en su carrera artística. Por un lado, tuvo la oportunidad de dirigir varios episodios de la serie; por el otro, grabó un disco a dúo con la francesa MIREILLE MATHIEU. Sin embargo, él no estaba totalmente satisfecho del rumbo que había tomado su carrera, por lo que fue el primer protagonista de DALLAS que decidió rescindir su contrato, obligando a los guionistas a “matar” a su personaje, BOBBY. “Quiero dejar la serie mientras estemos en los primeros lugares”, afirmó sinceramente.

Todo parecía indicar que el futuro de PATRICK estaba en el cine: en el Festival de CANNES de 1984 pudo verse su 1ª interpretación para la pantalla grande, ¿QUIÉN PERSIGUE A HARRY?, la historia de un saxofonista polaco en busca del éxito. Para DUFFY lo más importante es conservar su propio éxito y ser considerado un actor versátil, capaz de dar vida a cualquier personaje. Ello no le impidió retomar su papel en DALLAS, a petición de su compañero y hermano televisivo LARRY HAGMAN, en un intento de recuperar la audiencia perdida.

El 26 de septiembre de 1986, el regreso de BOBBY se convirtió en un hecho, mediante una pirueta argumental de los guionistas. Por ello, o quizá pese a ello, su rostro permanecerá indeleblemente asociado al nombre de uno de los héroes más entrañables de la TV.

The role of BOBBY EWING on DALLAS provided him prestige, money and fame, which he used to move on in his career. Firstly, he was able to direct a few episodes of the show; secondly, he recorded a duet single with French chanteuse MIREILLE MATHIEU. However, he was not completely satisfied with his career´s course, therefore he was the first DALLAS´s star who decided not to re-new his contract, thus obliging the writers to "kill" his character BOBBY. "I want to leave the show while we´re at the top", he honestly stated.

Everything seemed to lead PATRICK´s future to the movies: at the CANNES Festival ´84, his first big-screen performance could be seen: VAMPING, the story of a Polish saxo player searching for success. For DUFFY the main thing is keeping his own success and being considered as a versatile actor, capable to bring life to any character. This did not stop him to resume his part on DALLAS, by request of his workmate and onscreen brother LARRY HAGMAN, in an attempt to regain the lost audience. On September 26, 1986, BOBBY´s return became a fact through a plot twist of the writers. Because of it, or maybe despite of it, his face will always remain associated to the name of one of the most endearing TV heroes.
