STEVE KANALY (1983):
En el mayor momento de éxito de DALLAS en España, STEVE KANALY fue contratado para rodar un anuncio en nuestro país, específicamente en Barcelona. Se trataba de un anuncio de tejanos, marca exclusiva de uno de los grandes almacenes más importantes de España. También hicieron fotos publicitarias para prensa, y el actor aprovechó para recoger el Premio a la Mejor Serie Extranjera que le habían concedido los lectores de la revista TV "TelePrograma".
At the time of highest success of DALLAS in Spain, STEVE KANALY was hired to shoot a spot in our country, specífically in Barcelona. It was about a jeans´ commercial, exclusive brand of one of the biggest chain stores in Spain. They also did publicity sessions for the press, and the actor was the recever of the Award for Best Foreign Series that the readers of the TV magazine "TelePrograma" had voted previously.
PATRICK DUFFY (1983):
El intérprete de Bobby también vino invitado a España por motivos de negocios, aunque él y su esposa Carlyn pudieron hacer algo de turismo. Esa vez la campaña había sido diseñada por Pepsi para España y Portugal, y Patrick aparecía sentado junto a la piscina de Southfork. Promocionaba un concurso con un gran premio: dos billetes para visitar el rancho en Tejas.
Patrick concedió una conferencia de prensa y fue entrevistado para uno de los programas con más audiencia: "Estudio Abierto" (foto superior). El y Carlyn visitaron Madrid, así como Toledo (fotos inferiores) y, por supuesto, un típico tablao flamenco.
Estas fueron algunas de sus declaraciones:
- "Si tuviera un hermano como J.R. en la vida real, no le aguantaría ni 5 minutos."
- "Nunca hablo de mujeres ni dinero."
- "Gracias a BOBBY, puedo viajar, vivo mejor. Además, tengo trabajo..."
- "¡No soy el padre del hijo de J.R.!"
- "Cambiaría mi papel para que nadie pudiera llamar tonto a Bobby."
Bobby´s portrayer also was invited to Spain for business, although he and his wife Carlyn could do some sightseeing. That time, the campaign had been designed by Pepsi for Spain and Portugal, and Patrick appeared sitting by the Southfork pool. He promoted a contest with a big award: two tickets for visiting the ranch in Texas.
Patrick held a press conference and was interviewed for one of the highest ranked talk-shows: "Estudio Abierto" (above picture). He and Carlyn visited Madrid, as well as Toledo (below pics) and, of course, a typical "flamenco tablao".
These were some of his statements:
- "If I had a brother like J.R. in real life, I wouldn´t stand him for 5 minutes."
- "I never speak of women or money."
- "Thanks to BOBBY, I can travel, have a better life. Besides, I have a job..."
- "I´m not the father of J.R.´s baby!"
- "I would change my role so nobody could call Bobby dumb."

CHARLENE TILTON (1984):
En una agotadora gira de promoción (de su disco "C´est la vie), que terminaría con su audiencia con el Papa, Charlene y su pequeña hija Cherish llegaron a Barcelona el 23 de abril de 1984. Fue entrevistada por uno de presentadores más populares de TV3, e incluso cantó la canción que daba título a su disco. A continuación, le siguió la corriente al periodista en una escena en la que le decía que J.R. había llamado (en realidad era el actor que le doblaba, en "off") y quería hablar con ella. "¡De eso nada!", dijo ella. Entonces "J.R." respondió que era "muy tozuda" y que estaba pensando en invertir en unos pozos de la costa catalana...
Estas son algunas de las declaraciones de Charlene:
- "¡Me quedaré en DALLAS hasta que se sequen los pozos de petróleo!"
- "Lucy necesita mucho amor, e intenta portarse bien en medio de los negocios de J.R."
- "También necesito amor, pero lo consigo a través de usted y de personas como aquel maravilloso cantante..." (le dijo al presentador)
- "Todas las chicas de Dallas somos muy buenas amigas, me tratan como a un niño, porque soy la más joven."
- "Prefiero rodar en estudio que en Dallas, está cerca de mi casa."
- "No he tenido suerte con el amor, sólo con mi (ex-)marido (Johnny Lee)."
- "Aquí bebéis más (que los habitantes de Southfork)...No, es broma...En la vida real, NO BEBEN."
During an exhausting promotion tour (for her single "C´est la vie), which ended with a meeting with the Pope, Charlene and her baby girl Cherish arrived at Barcelona on April 23th 1984. She was interviewed by one of the most popular presenters of TV3, and even sang the title song. After that, she humored the host in one scene in which he told her that J.R. was calling her (actually, it was the dubbing actor speaking off-screen) and wanted to talk to her. "No way!", she said. Then "J.R." answered that she was "stubborn" and that he was thinking about investing on some oil rigs at the Catalan Coast...
These were some of Charlene´s statements:
- "I´ll stay on DALLAS until oil fields get dry!"
- "Lucy needs a lot of love, and tries to be good in the middle of J.R.´s business."
- "I need love too, but I get it through people like you and that wonderful singer, he´s so hot...!" (ashe said to the presenter.)
- "All the girls on Dallas are very good friends, they treat me like a baby, because I´m the youngest."
- "I´d better shoot at the Studio than Dallas, it´s near home."
- "I haven´t been lucky with love, only with my (ex-)husband (Johnny Lee)."
- "You drink more here (than the Southfork residents)...No, I´m kidding...In real life, they DON´T DRINK."
VICTORIA PRINCIPAL (1989):
Dos años después de abandonar DALLAS, la intérprete de PAMELA llegó a Barcelona en octubre de 1989, para rodar un resplandeciente anuncio navideño de la marca de cava Freixenet. Con un sueldo de 19 millones de pesetas de la época, la actriz bailó y cantó dirigida por Juanjo Díaz y coreografiada por Larry Fuller.
La canción elegida fue “Fever”, curiosamente popularizada por Elvis Presley (difunto ex marido de la rival de VICTORIA en DALLAS, PRISCILLA), y con un acompañamiento de varias bailarinas, conocidas como “las Burbujas”. Al final del anuncio, VICTORIA felicitaba las Fiestas a los espectadores en varios idiomas, incluidos el castellano y el catalán.
En las conferencias de prensa que concedió al respecto, la actriz confesó que siempre había querido probar suerte con el musical, que le encantaría trabajar en el cine español y que no le interesaba tocar el tema de DALLAS: “Guardo un excelente recuerdo de ellos y me encantaría volver a coincidir, pero no para volver a hacer DALLAS”.
Two years after leaving DALLAS, PAMELA´s portrayer arrived at Barcelona on October 1989, in order to shoot a glitzy Christmas spot for the cava brand Freixenet. She earned about two million dollars of the time, and danced and sang directed by Juanjo Díaz and choreographed by Larry Fuller.
The chosen song was “Fever”, curiously popularized by Elvis Presley (late ex-husband of VICTORIA´s rival on DALLAS, PRISCILLA), accompanied by several chorus dancers, known as “Burbujas” ("Bubbles"). At the end of the commercial, VICTORIA congratulated the Christmas holidays to viewers in several languages, including Spanish and Catalan.
At the press conferences she held, the actress confessed she had always wanted to play on musicals, and also work in Spanish movies but not talking about the DALLAS subject: “I keep wonderful memories of them and would love to coincide with them again, but not to do DALLAS again”.
OMRI KATZ (1992):
El actor infantil que encarnó al hijo de J.R. durante 7 años, y luego en la 1ª Reunión, viajó hasta Madrid en 1992 para rodar un episodio de la serie LAS NUEVAS AVENTURAS DEL ZORRO. Acababa de terminar la filmación de la película DINOSAURIOS, y, con sus 15 años, ya no se parecía demasiado al peculiar JOHN ROSS de DALLAS.
OMRI se reveló muy distinto de su papel en la serie y manifestó su agradecimiento hacia el actor que interpretaba a su padre J.R. en la ficción, LARRY HAGMAN. Oriundo de LOS ANGELES pero de origen israelí, OMRI tiene dos hermanos y sus padres están divorciados. Después de aquella serie, vinieron otros proyectos como MATINÉE, EL RETORNO DE LAS BRUJAS, FREEKS AND GEEKS y su salida del armario como gay con la película JOURNEY INTO NIGHT.
The child actor who incarnated J.R.´s son for 7 years and then in the first Reunion, flew to Madrid in 1992 to film an episode of series ZORRO. He had just finished movie “Adventures in Dinosaur City”, and, being 15 years old, he didn´t look too much like the peculiar JOHN ROSS from DALLAS.
OMRI revealed himself as very different from his role at the show and expressed his gratitude towards the actor who played his father J.R. in fiction, LARRY HAGMAN. Born in LOS ANGELES but with Israel roots, he has one brother and one sister, and his parents are divorced. After that series, came other projects like MATINÉE, HOCUS POCUS, FREEKS AND GEEKS and his gay outing through movie JOURNEY INTO NIGHT.
CHARLENE TILTON (1999):
CHARLENE regresó a Barcelona 10 años después de su partida definitiva de DALLAS. Fue entrevistada de nuevo en TV3, esta vez por el popular periodista ALFONS ARÚS. Luciendo un poco habitual peinado corto y con indumentaria negra de cuero, hizo gala de su excelente sentido del humor y la autoparodia, y estuvo mucho más acertada que en su primera visita a España.
Entre otras cosas, CHARLENE confirmó que su ex marido JOHNNY LEE no había contribuido a la manutención de la hija que tenían en común, que su madre había fallecido de cáncer, que todos se llevaban bien en el rodaje de la serie, y que desde muy joven era completamente independiente de su madre. Comentó jocosamente el tipo de educación que le daba a su hija ya adolescente CHERISH, y que ésta había decidido seguir sus pasos como actriz.
Cuando el presentador recordó que el “accidente de coche de PAM” se había convertido en un sueño, CHARLENE le siguió la broma sin corregirle, y dijo que ella ya no estaba en la serie por aquel entonces. Por último, no dudó en promocionar sus últimos y modestos proyectos para el Disney Channel y ofrecerse como presentadora, flirteando pícaramente con el entrevistador.
CHARLENE returned to Barcelona 10 years after her final departure from DALLAS. She was interviewed on TV3 again, this time by popular journalist ALFONS ARÚS. She wore an unusual short hairdo and a black leather jacket, showed her great sense of humor and self-parody, and gave a funny, sympathetic interview that turned out much better than in her first visit to Spain.
Among other things, CHARLENE confirmed that her ex-husband JOHNNY LEE hadn´t contributed to their daughter´s raising, that her mother had died of cancer, that everbody got along very well at the show, and that she had been very independent from her mother since childhood. She joyfully commented what kind of education was giving to her teenage daughter CHERISH, and that she had decided to follow her steps as an actress.
When the host reminded her that “PAM´s car accident” had become a dream, CHARLENE joked along and made him no correction, adding that by then she was not at the show anymore. Lastly, she didn´t hesitate to promote her last and modest projects for Disney Channel and offered to act as an anchorwoman, as she flirted with the interviewer very naughtily.
LARRY HAGMAN (1999):
El 10 de noviembre de 1999, el actor llegó a Barcelona para participar en la campaña pro Transplante de Organos, incluida una intervención en el programa benéfico de TV3 LA MARATÓ. Además aprovechó para fotografiarse en la localidad catalana de El Vendrell, durante un torneo de golf especial. 4 años después de haber recibido él mismo un nuevo hígado, LARRY no tuvo ningún inconveniente en hablar de DALLAS, del fenómeno del disparo y, por supuesto, de los transplantes:
“Ahora utilizo a J.R. como paladín de los transplantes de órganos. Lo reciclamos todo: neumáticos, aluminio, plástico, todo. ¿Por qué no reciclarnos nosotros mismos...?”
On November 10th 1999, the actor arrived at Barcelona to join the Organ Transplant Campaign, and also the TV3 telethon LA MARATÓ. He was photographed in the Catalan town of El Vendrell, during a special golf tournament. 4 years after receiving a new liver himself, LARRY had no inconvenient to talk about DALLAS, the Who Shot J.R.? phenomenon and, of course, the transplants:
“Now I´m using J.R. as a paladin for organ transplants. We recycle everything: tyres, aluminum, plastic, everything. Why not to recycle ourselves...?”
LA EXPERIENCIA MIRANDE (2007): CUANDO CONOCIMOS A LOS EWING
Incluso unos meses después, resulta difícil poner por escrito lo que significó esta experiencia para nosotros. Llegamos desde Barcelona al Festival Country de la Mirande para conocer a nuestras admiradas estrellas de Dallas y, por supuesto, disfrutar de la hermosa campiña francesa y de la compañía.
Era viernes 13, pero aquello no nos asustó lo más mínimo. Subimos al autocar a primera hora de la mañana y llegamos a Toulouse con una hora de retraso. Gracias a nuestros amabilísimos amigos franceses del Dallas 2002 Forum, que tuvieron la paciencia de esperarnos, llegamos por fin a la Mirande a última hora de la tarde.
Nuestro primer encuentro con los Ewing se dio en la entrada al pueblo, al ver un gran cartel anunciando el evento. Todo el mundo estaba contento y era muy hospitalario. Conocimos a los demás fans de Dallas, que también nos ayudaron a sentirnos cómodos. El pueblo era pintoresco y, de un modo algo extraño, parecía americano. Pero tuvimos que marcharnos temprano porque habíamos venido en un largo viaje en autocar.
El sábado por la mañana hicimos nuestro propio descubrimiento de la Miranda, e incluso encontramos un buen restaurante nada caro. Teníamos muchas dudas sobre la Reunión de Dallas: ¿Nos podían firmar cualquier cosa o sólo la foto que vendían en el Festival? ¿Y sobre la cena, qué? Mi amigo Mauricio y yo habíamos hecho una reserva con otros fans franceses de Dallas para cenar en el mismo lugar que los actores.¿Podía ser verdad?
Así que nos dirigimos al mismo recinto del Festival y conseguimos respuestas a casi todas nuestras preguntas. El lugar era una combinación de Rodeo y Barbacoa, hablando en términos de Dallas. Había muchos puestos de comida y bebida, grandes fotos de los actores, el lugar donde cenaríamos aquella noche, etc. Averiguamos que la firma de autógrafos estaba programada para las 8 de la tarde, así que teníamos un par de horas antes para hacer cola (aunque no era realmente necesario).
Después de comer y de hacer la siesta, volvimos al Festival y compramos nuestras fotos del reparto de Dallas. Entonces, tuvimos que esperar bajo el sol de la tarde de un día muy caluroso, aunque había llovido días antes allí. Debo decir que mi amigo esperó allí más tiempo que yo, para ser justo, y le doy las gracias..
A eso de las ocho y diez, la gente estaba ya nerviosa porque el puesto de los autógrafos estaba en el lateral del escenario de conciertos, y no teníamos apenas visión de las estrellas que iban llegando. Yo vi primero los brillantes ojos azules de Steve Kanaly, y luego al delgado Patrick Duffy, tal como estaría Bobby unos años después. Luego entraron Larry, Charlene y Linda…Alguien empezó a hablar y luego a cantar. Los fans estábamos ansiosos de conocer a nuestros ídolos…
No sé si cantaron Charlene o su hija Cherish, pero lo hicieron muy bien, y casi a las ocho y media, empezaron a salir guardaespaldas en camiseta roja. Finalmente, llegaron al “stand”, y todos los fans aplaudimos y gritamos, llamando a los actores a veces por sus nombres verdaderos, a veces por los de sus personajes.
Y el quinteto se sentó “delante de nosotros...”. En realidad, había una barra metálica separadora entre “ellos” y “nosotros”, incluso cuando nos firmaban la foto. Allí estaban Linda, Steve, Patrick, Charlene y Larry, no por último menos importante. ¿Cómo describir un momento tan emocionante? Yo quería conectar de alguna manera con ellos y no sólo decirles “gracias”, así que…
…Finalmente llegamos ante la presencia de Linda. Le dije que veníamos de España y estábamos muy contentos de conocerla, y la invitamos a venir ya que ella era la única actriz del reparto original que no había estado en España. Con un gesto gracioso, Linda se echó atrás y, hablando por detrás de Steve, le dijo a Patrick: “¿Has estado en España?”. Fue tan emocionante que ni pude oír su respuesta. Entonces le dijimos a Linda que pensábamos que era fantástica y seguimos con Steve…
Linda tenía un aspecto radiante y ninguna foto podía hacerle justicia (y menos las que nosotros hicimos). Parecía salida del pasado, como de la Etapa-Sueño, y llevaba un sombrero tejano y un vestido marrón. Su sonrisa brillante, sus modales amables y dulces y, como hubiera dicho JR, ¡¡aquellos ojos!!
Steve y Patrick estaban mucho más ocupados firmando y hablando entre ellos, o al menos eso me pareció. Y entonces, me encontré delante de Charlene: le hablé también de España, y de su visita cuando Cherish era un bebé. Recordaba todo aquello, pues poco después, había tenido una vista con el Papa en Roma (bueno, usé aquello para hacerla recordar, aunque no era necesario: posee una gran memoria). Luego le di las gracias y dije “vuelve, te echamos de menos”…Ella también estaba estupenda, llena de energía y muy alegre…
Al final, me encontré cara a cara con el “Maestro”: Larry Hagman. La persona a cargo de la seguridad era muy insistente y yo me puse algo nervioso, así que le di las gracias a Larry y le dije: “A sus pies, Amo”. Crucé mis brazos e hice el gesto de “Mi Bella Genio”, y Larry reparó en él y sonrió, levantando el dedo. Fue una forma de decirle lo agradecidos que estábamos y no sólo por Dallas, sino también por toda su carrera. Por aquel entonces, yo volaba en mi alfombra en dirección desconocida…
THE MIRANDE EXPERIENCE (2007): WHEN WE MET THE EWINGS
Even a few months after, it´s still hard to put in words what this experience was like for us. We came from Barcelona to la Mirande Country Festival just to meet our dear Dallas stars and, of course, enjoy the beautiful French place and each other´s company.
It was Friday the 13th, but it didn´t scare us at all. We took the line bus in the early morning and arrived at Toulouse one hour late. Thanks to the very kind French friends from the Dallas 2002 Forum who had the patience to wait for us, we could finally get to the Mirande later in the afternoon.
We first met the Ewings at the entranceway to the village, through the big poster announcing the event. They all looked happy and so welcoming! We met other Dallas fans that made us comfortable there. The village was pintoresque and looked American in a very strange way. But we had to leave early since it was a very long bus travel.
Saturday morning we did our own discovery of la Mirande, and even found a very good and unexpensive restaurant. We had a lot of doubts about the Dallas meeting: Could we get anything signed or only the picture sold at the Festival? What about the dinner? My friend Mauricio and I had a reservation along with the other Dallas French fans for a dinner in the same place than the actors! Could this be true?
So we took our way to the Festival itself and we got most of our questions answered. The place was a sort of mixture of a Rodeo and a Barbecue, to speak in Dallas´s words. There were a lot of food and drink stands, big pics of the stars, the place where we would be dining that evening, and so. We found out that the signing was scheduled at 8 pm, so we had to be a couple of hours earlier back to stand at the queue (though it wasn´t really necessary).
After lunch and our “siesta”, we went back at the Festival and got our pics of the Dallas cast. Then we had to wait under the afternoon sun, in a very very hot day, though it was rainy a few days ago there. I must say that my friend waited there longer than me, to be fair, and I thank him for that too…
About ten minutes past eight, the people was so nervous since the signature stand was at the concert stand´s side and we had a small sight of the stars coming up on it. The first thing I saw was Steve Kanaly´s bright blue eyes, and then Patrick Duffy´s slim body, looking just Bobby a few years after. Then came Larry, Charlene and Linda…Someone began to talk and then to sing. The fans were anxious to meet their idols…
I don´t know if it was Charlene or her daughter Cherish who sang, but they sounded great, and almost at half past eight, we begin to see some of the bodyguards in red T-shirt. Finally, they came into the stand, and all the fans clapped and shouted, calling the actors sometimes by their real names, sometimes by their characters´.
And the five of them sat down “in front of us”. There really was an iron fence between “them” and “us”, even when we got the pic signed. There they were: Linda, Steve, Patrick, Charlene and Larry, last but not least. How can you tell about such a thrilling moment? I knew that I wanted to have some kind of connection with them and not only say “thank you” so…
…So we eventually were in front of Linda. I said that we came from Spain and were very glad to meet her, and invited her to come since she was the only one from the original cast who never was in Spain. Funnily, Linda moved back and, behind Steve´s back, she said to Patrick: “Have you been in Spain?”. I was so excited that I couldn´t hear his answer. We then told Linda how wonderful we thought she was and went on to Steve…
Linda looked absolutely stunning, and no picture will make her justice (much less the ones I took of her). She seemed blast from the past, just out of the Dream Season, wearing a Texan hat and a brown dress. That shining smile, those sweet, kind manners, and, as JR would say, those eyes!!
Steve and Patrick were a lot busier signing and talking to each other, or at least that seemed to me. And then I was in front if Charlene: I also told her about Spain, and her visit when Cherish was a baby. She remembered all that, since after that, she had an audition with the Pope in Rome (well, I used that to make her remember, though I didn´t have to: she has a great memory). Then I said thanks and “come back, we miss you”…She looked gorgeous too, so full of energy and joy…
At the end, I found myself looking up at the “Master”: Larry Hagman. The person at charge of security was a little pushy and I was a bit nervous, so I thanked Larry and told him: “At your feet, Master”. I crossed my arms and did the “I Dream of Jeannie” gesture, and Larry noticed it and smiled. Just a way to tell him how thankful we were to him and not only for Dallas, but also for his whole career. I was flying away on my carpet by then…
