El 22 de marzo de 1986, la CBS emitía el telefilme de 150 minutos de duración titulado DALLAS: THE EARLY YEARS (LOS PRIMEROS AÑOS). En esta miniserie, DAVID JACOBS, creador de la SAGA EWING, narraba el comienzo de la relación de amor-odio entre ambas familias. El argumento cubría un periodo de casi veinte años en el que se desvelaban los secretos del enfrentamiento entre los EWING y los BARNES. La historia consta de una introducción a cargo del viejo J.R., que inicia una charla con un periodista en torno a aquellos primeros tiempos...

RANCHO SOUTHFORK, noviembre de 1951. Los EWING y los SOUTHWORTH celebran su barbacoa anual en honor de los veteranos de guerra, cuando llega WILLARD "DIGGER" BARNES con una botella en la mano y una pistola en la otra. Va a intentar asesinar a JOCK EWING...¿Por qué...? ¿Qué sucedió quince años antes que provoca este gesto loco y desesperado...?

En 1933, el RANCHO SOUTHFORK, propiedad de AARON y BARBARA SOUTHWORTH, es el escenario de una tradicional barbacoa anual que sirve de marco para el romántico encuentro entre la bella hija del matrimonio SOUTHWORTH, ELLIE, de 15 años, y el muchacho WILLARD BARNES, de 17. Ella cree estar enamorada y espera compartir su futuro con él. El proyectado matrimonio significará la definitiva unión de las tierras de SOUTHFORK que, en parte, pertenecen a WILLARD por haber sido heredadas de su padre, ya fallecido. La afición a la bebida del muchacho y la aparición en escena de un ambicioso y decidido JOCK EWING, cambiarán radicalmente las cosas y ese futuro planeado por ELLIE y WILLARD, quien ha conocido a JOCK y a su hermano JASON (futuro padre de JACK Y JAMIE) y con quienes ha formado una pequeña compañía para extraer petróleo en REGAL, TEXAS.

WILLARD posee la habilidad de detectar el "oro negro", mientras que JOCK tiene la fuerza y la decisión para sacarlo a la superficie y comercializarlo. Parece la combinación ideal, pero las cosas se complican de nuevo por la afición a la botella de WILLARD, que pronto se siente atraído por el juego, sobre todo cuando, tras hacer la presentación entre su mejor amigo JOCK y la mujer que lo representa todo para él, ELLIE, descubre que entre ellos ha nacido un gran amor y que ELLIE ya no puede sentir por él más que un cariño fraternal.

ELLIE, cuyo padre tiene muy mala salud, se ve obligada a contraer matrimonio para salvar el rancho. Una noche, prefiere elegir a JOCK que a DIGGER...Ese desengaño hunde definitivamente a DIGGER que, en el curso de una borrachera, renuncia a su propiedad de parte del rancho cuando AARON y JOCK le proponen vendérselo a ellos. DIGGER no les presta atención, pero JOCK firma el cheque que cierra la operación.

Han pasado veinte años. BARNES se dispone a abandonar DALLAS para siempre y visita por última vez los terrenos que fueron suyos. Al llegar a ellos, una familiar mueca se dibuja en su semblante: hay PETROLEO en ese suelo. Para DIGGER, aquello es demasiado y, con un gesto sombrío, se encamina a SOUTHFORK con la venganza en la mente...WILLARD extrae una pistola del bolsillo de su chaqueta y encañona a JOCK EWING, que le mira desde el balcón de la casa.

Pero falla el tiro, por supuesto. Es 1951. El odio se ha sembrado definitivamente entre los EWING y los BARNES, en presencia de cinco niños: J.R., de 16 años, que aprovecha cualquier oportunidad romántica; el tímido BOBBY, el travieso GARY, el gruñón CLIFF y la encantadora PAM, cuyas edades oscilan entre los 3 y los 7 años. La historia termina con la imagen de 2 niños que juegan, hasta que un malhumorado muchachito llamado CLIFF separa a su hermana del benjamín de los EWING, llevándosela de SOUTHFORK, con el tema musical de la serie en ascenso. "¡Adiós, Bobby..." El resto es HISTORIA.

On March 22 1986, CBS aired the 150-minute telemovie titled DALLAS: THE EARLY YEARS. In this mini-series, DAVID JACOBS, creator of the EWING SAGA, narrated the beginning of the love-hate relationship between both families. The plot covered about twenty years and developed the secrets of the EWING-BARNES feud. The story had an introduction at charge of old J.R., who started to talk to a journalist about those early years...

SOUTHFORK RANCH, November 1951. The EWINGS and the SOUTHWORTHES are holding their annual barbecue to honor the war veterans when WILLARD "DIGGER" BARNES arrives with a bottle in one hand and a pistol in the other. He is going to try to kill JOCK EWING...Why...? What happened fifteen years ago that causes this mad, desperate gesture...?

In 1933, SOUTHFORK RANCH, property of AARON and BARBARA SOUTHWORTH, is the background of a traditional annual barbecue that becomes the setting for the romantic encouenter between the beautiful daughter of the SOUTHWORTH marriage, ELLIE, 15 years old, and boy WILLARD BARNES, 17. She believes to be in love and hopes to share her future with him. The planned marriage will imply the ultimate union of the SOUTHFORK lands which belong, partly, to WILLARD by inheritance of his deceased father. The young man´s excessive drinking and the entrance of an ambitious and determined JOCK EWING, will change things forever and that future planned by ELLIE and WILLARD, who met JOCK and his brother JASON (future father of JACK and JAMIE) and with whom he formed a small oil company in REGAL, TEXAS.

WILLARD has the ability of detecting the "black gold", while JOCK has the strentgh and decision to pump it out and commercialize it. It seems the ideal combination, but the situation gets complicated again due to WILLARD´s heavy drinking and gambling, especially when, after introducing his best friend JOCK to the woman who is everything to him, ELLIE, discovers that they have fallen in love and ELLIE will only feel for him nothing but a sisterly love.

ELLIE, whose father´s health is very serious, has to get married to save the ranch. One night, she prefers JOCK better than DIGGER...That heartbreak gets DIGGER deep down and, during a lost weekend, he refuses to his ownership of part of the ranch when AARON and JOCK offer to buy it. DIGGER pays no attention to them, but JOCK signs up the check that closes the deal.

Twenty years later, BARNES decides to leave DALLAS once and forever and visits by last time his old lands. When he arrives, his face turns familiar: there is OIL in that ground. For DIGGER, that is the last drop and, looking somber, he heads to SOUTHFORK with a revenge in his mind...WILLARD picks a pistol out of his jacket pocket and points at JOCK EWING, who stares at him from his house´s balcony.

But he misses the shot, of course. The year is 1951. The hatred is ultimately sowed among the EWING and the BARNESES, in presence of five children: a 16-year-old J.R., who takes any chance for a romantic overture; shy BOBBY, naughty GARY, grumpy CLIFF and lovely PAM, whose ages range between three and seven. The story ends with the image of 2 boys playing, until a bad-tempered little kid called CLIFF takes his sister away from the youngest of the EWING boys, and away from SOUTHFORK, as the show´s theme rises. "Bye, Bobby..." The rest is HISTORY.
