William Morris

William Baines Morris, born on 23 January, 1853, was educated at Harrow before joining the Seventh Hussars.

Devoted to horses and riding, he enjoyed numerous victories in the saddle including the 1879 Irish Grand Military at Punchestown on Witch Hazel, the 1880 Grand Military Hunt Cup on May Bloom and the Gold Cup, which he won in 1877 and 1878 on Chilblain.


The best of his own horses was Wild Norah ll on which he won the 1879 Irish Grand Military Hunt Steeplechase at Punchestown and both the Hussar Challenge Cup and the Regimental Challenge Cup at the 7th Hussars' Meeting at Newbridge.

His one assault on the Grand National came in 1885. He rode Downpatrick, third to Empress in 1880. Downpatrick broke down when looking extremely dangerous.


Willie Morris was killed by a fall from his horse when hunting with the Cheshire hounds on Thursday, February 20, 1890.


He was the brother-in-law of Captain 'Wenty' Hope-Johnstone.
