John Marshall rode over jumps for most of the 1970s and had 22 wins.
His first mount, Flame Of Fire, was pulled up in the Blakeny Novices’ Hurdle at Fakenham on October 9, 1970, and it was almost two years before he had a winner. It finally came at Huntingdon on Bank Holiday Monday, August 28, 1972, when Lutrin, owned and trained by David Ringer, beat thee rivals to land the Alconbury Selling Handicap Hurdle by three lengths. John had finished second on both the 11-year-old’s starts that season, and that was the position they occupied on their next two outings together.
It was almost a year before the young jockey won again, but over the next three seasons he increased his scores each time. He finished the 1974/75 campaign on a high note, having ridden in over 100 races and winning the last two of the season at Market Rasen.
Four of his wins were gained on handicap hurdler The Bay Turk, including in the Doug Barrott Hurdle at Sandown Park.
Having ridden a career-best seven winners in the 1975/76, he appears not to have had any mounts the following season, but came back in 1977/78 to score three more times, including a winner for Captain Tim Forster.
His final success was at Market Rasen on December 2, 1977, when Indian Sol easily beat Welsh Treaty and ten others in the Gordon Arms Handicap Hurdle. The five-year-old won by ten lengths but was unplaced in two subsequent starts with John in the saddle.
He had his last ride at Towcester on May 26, 1978, when Sky Tour finished last of six in the Gayhurst Handicap Hurdle.
