Richard Marshall

1951 - 2015


Richard Charles Marshall was a top-notch apprentice who served his time with his father, Bill.

Born on October 28 1951, Richard rode his first winner, Native Bazaar, at Warwick on March 31, 1970.

His big race tally includes the Free Handicap, 2,000 Guineas Trial and the Windsor Castle Stakes at Royal Ascot on Adam's Pet.

His best season, numerically, was 1972, with 38 winners.

Richard spent three years racing in Zimbabwe and took his first mount back in Britain when he rode Rose Loubet in the 4.15 at Hamilton on Friday May 8, 1987.

On Tuesday, October 13 1987, Richard rode for the last time, (Optional Choice at Warwick).

He was not seen back on the racecourse until returning as an owner. His first runner was Lochengair in a hurdle race at Carlisle on November 14 1988.

He then suffered a bad accident, falling from Fraam while riding work at Newmarket, and spent his 43rd birthday in Addenbrooke's Hospital, critically ill with head and back injuries.

Richard lived at Majors Farm, Whitsbury, Hants, and listed his recreations as swimming, reading and disco.

He died on 17 March, 2015.
