Sean Anthony Magee was born in Ireland on August 29, 1911, and was the son of Louis M. Magee, captain of Ireland's International Rugby team and also a fine sprinter.
Apprenticed to Stanley Wootton, he rode 34 winners on the Flat in Britain, 14 in both 1928 and 1929 and six in 1930. His first victory was at Newmarket on May 15, 1928, when Sun Gem, trained by Wootton, won the Apprentice Plate Handicap, beating Cragford by two lengths.,
His final win on the Flat was at Folkestone on September 6, 1930, when Irish Lord, also trained by Wootton, narrowly beat Silver Sword, the mount of Bobby Dick, by a head in the Sandwich Selling Plate.
Sean won on his first ride over hurdles, Peeper, at Lingfield on December 12, 1930.
He later rode in Ireland and twice became Champion jump jockey.
He recorded by far his most important victory when winning the Champion Hurdle in 1940 on Solford, owned by Dorothy Paget and trained by Owen Anthony.
Sean died at East Grinstead on April 20, 1988.
