George Mawson

1865 - 1897

George Mawson was the jockey aboard the 1888 Grand National winner Playfair.

George had been somewhat fortunate to find himself in the saddle; the mount had originally been offered to William Nightingall (brother of Arthur) who had turned it down, preferring to ride the eventual third, Ballot Box.

Playfair won at 40/1; ten lengths away in second came Frigate, ridden by the ill-fated amateur, Willie Beasley. Frigate went on to win the next year's National.

Both George and Playfair were making their National debut.

Born in London on July 27, 1865, George was apprenticed to Tom Cannon and rode his first winner on Priestcraft at Sandown in 1886. Besides his Grand National victory, he rode several other big winners including the Welsh Grand National in 1895 on Deerstalker, the Liverpool Hurdle (1891) on Master Charlie, the Jubilee Handicap Hurdle (1891) on Dornoch, and the Great Sandown Hurdle three times on Master Charlie (1891), Yorkshireman (1892) and Amphidamas (1896).

He suffered a bad fall from a horse named Ardcarn at Sandown on April 24, 1896, which required a major operation that autumn. He died not long afterwards, near Tewkesbury, on January 15, 1897, and was buried at Stockbridge.
