Alf Morgan

1848 - c1905

Alfred (Alf) Morgan, the son of a stud groom, was born in Norfolk in 1848. He was apprenticed to William Butler at Newmarket.

He only rode for a few years but rode 11 winners in 1864, which included the Stewards' Cup on Lord Westmorland’s horse Marigold and Epsom’s City and Suburban Handicap on Merry Hart.

A painting of Merry Hart with jockey up is still in existence.

After retiring from the saddle, Alf pursued a number of occupations outside racing and all over the country but met with little success. He died circa 1905.
