John McAuley

Flat jockey John McAuley was born in 1975 at Tannochside in Scotland. He began his racing career with Lady Herries in Sussex, where he had a few mounts without success. It was not until he returned to his native country, riding for Robert McKellar and Linda Perratt that he began to ride winners, the first of which was Johayro in Ripon's Newby Apprentice Handicap on 17th April 1997. He left Perratt’s Cree Lodge stables in August 1998 to take up a post as stable apprentice to Les Eyre near Thirsk. The main factor for him leaving Cree Lodge was the amount of travelling he was obliged to undertake to reach race meetings in Yorkshire and beyond. The move to Yorkshire proved successful and he finished that 1998 campaign with a score of 11 winners from 216 mounts. He rode nine winners in 1999 and eight in 2000. He came close to landing a big race triumph when finishing second on 33/1 outsider High And Mighty in the 2001 Chester Cup, beaten three-quarters of a length.

He rode nine winners the following year but his scores went into decline thereafter. His victory on Tim Etherington’s 20/1 shot Feu Duty at Musselburgh on September 13, 2003, was one of only three winners he rode that year.

John’s last two winners were achieved in 2006, firstly on the Michael Chapman-trained Mister Becks at Southwell on May 16, secondly on Cool Isle for Paul Howling in a Yarmouth claimer on August 16. He had his final ride on Overstayed, trained by Michael Mullineaux, at Southwell on February 14, 2008, finishing seventh of eight in a class 5 handicap.
