Having ridden three winners as an amateur, David Sidney Madgwick added five more after turning professional. Seven of his eight wins were gained on just one horse, a modest chaser named Snitterfield.
The son of Michael Madgwick, who trained at Denmead, in Hampshire, David was following in the footsteps of brothers Aubrey and Geoff who had both ridden winners in the 1980s.
David had his first victory when True Weight, trained by his father, won the Friends of Folkestone Handicap, an amateur riders’ Flat race, holding off the challenge of Irish Hero, the mount of Maxine Juster, by a length.
He had his first success over jumps at Fontwell Park on February 22, 1988, when Snitterfield, also trained by his father, took the lead at the 13th fence and ran on to be Fils de Roi, ridden by Peter Hobbs, by a length and a half in the Wittering Selling Handicap Chase. After finishing second at Plumpton on March 1, they returned to that Sussex venue 14 days later and went one better when taking the Bolney Handicap Chase, a race for amateur riders, by three lengths. After that the partnership twice finished second before the season ended.
David made a slow start to his professional career but scored his first success in the paid ranks when Snitterfield came good for him again, taking the Plumpton Handicap Chase on October 23, 1990, following a prolonged battle Gardener’s Choice. They followed up seven days later when getting up in the last few strides to pip Vincanto and land the Kinghorns Conditional Jockeys’ Handicap Chase at Fontwell by a neck.
They were perhaps fortunate to win their third race of the season, having finishing second to Travail Girl in the Coomes Conditional Jockeys’ Selling Chase back at Fontwell on December 4, only for the winner to be disqualified for having a prohibited substance in her urine.
Snitterfield and David then enjoyed further good fortune when looking booked for second place in the Bryan Robinson Conditional Jockeys’ Handicap Chase at Plumpton on New Year’s Eve. David and Snitterfield were gifted the race when clear leader Bendicks fell at the second last fence.
David’s seventh and last victory on Snitterfield, his eighth in all, was again at Plumpton, when the by now 13-year-old held off the challenge of Paradise Park, six years his junior, to land the BBC Radio Sussex Handicap Chase by a short head on Easter Monday, April 9, 1991. Neither horse nor jockey visited the winner’s enclosure ever again.
