Gérald Mossé

Born in Marseille, France on January 3, 1967, Gérald Ludovic Mossé served his apprenticeship under Patrick-Louis Biancone at Lamorlaye and rode his first winner in 1983. He was France’s champion apprentice in 1984, which led to an offer to ride for renowned trainer François Boutin, his stable of horses belonging to Jean-Luc Lagardère

Gérald went on to become one of his country’s top jockeys, winning the 1990 Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe on Saumarez. In 1991, he rode Arazi to five straight wins in France then spent 1992 and part of 1993 riding in Hong Kong

From 1993 to late 2001, Gérald was the principal rider for the horses belonging to the Aga Khan. He then returned to live and race in Hong Kong but continued to ride in major European and international races.

He recorded his first success in Britain on Gold Splash in the 1993 Coronation Stakes at Royal Ascot, a race he was to win again in 2011 on Immortal Verse.

He won three British Group One races on Nuclear Debate, landing the King’s Stand Stakes and Nunthorpe Stakes in 2000 and the Haydock Sprint Cup in 2001. He also rode a Group race winner for Queen Elizabeth II on Fabricate in the 2017 Winter Hill Stakes at Windsor. He finished second on Daliapour the 1999 Derby.

He won all five French Classics on multiple occasions: the Prix du Jockey Club (Derby) three times, Prix de Diane (Oaks) five times, Poule d’Essai des Poulains (2000 Guineas) three times, Poule d’Essai des Pouliches (1000 Guineas) twice, and Prix Royal-Oak (St Leger) twice. He also won the Grand Prix de Paris on two occasions.

On November 2, 2010, Gérald became the first French jockey to win the Melbourne Cup, riding the American-bred horse Americain. Worth £32,097,222, it was the richest prize he won during his career.

He is one of an elite group of jockeys to have ridden more than 500 winners in Hong Kong. He ended the 2013/14 season with 24 wins for a Hong Kong career total of 603. They included four Group One victories on Jim And Tonic, the horse that also provided him with success in the Dubai Duty Free in 2001.

Aged 57, having enjoyed huge success on the international stage, winning more than 90 Group One races around the world, Gérald brought his 41-year career in the saddle with a final ride at Chantilly on Sunday, July 14, 2024. Alas, there was no fairytale ending, his mount, Shannkyir, bred by his longtime employer the Aga Khan and trained by Mikel Delzangles, could finish only 15th of the 16 runners.

He stated his intention to become a public trainer in Chantilly from September 1, 2024, having obtained his trainer’s licence in 2022 before purchasing a 40-box yard.

His major wins were:
