Rikki Morse

Flat jockey Rikki Raymond Morse was born in London on October 13, 1965. In 1981 he began his apprenticeship with Newmarket trainer Bill Holden who provided Rikki with his first winner, Minus Man, in a one-mile apprentices handicap at Kempton Park on July 19, 1984. They repeated their victory in that same race twelve months later.

Rikki was a successful apprentice during the mid-1980s, riding ten winners in both 1986 and 1987, which included consecutive runnings of the George Todd Apprentice Challenge Trophy at Goodwood, firstly on Minus Man, secondly on the Ken Ivory-trained Cheerful Times.

Having lost his claim at the end of 1988, Rikki rode as a professional in 1989, registering four winners. In 1990 he went to ride in Germany, his first stop being with trainer Michael Trybul. He also rode for Uwe Ostmann, Uwe Stoltefuss and British-born former National Hunt jockey Bruce Hellier.

However, Rikki scored his biggest successes for trainer Georg Ording on Vincenzo, whom he rode to victory in the Group 3 Premio Carlo Porta at San Siro, Milan, October 31, 1993, and the Group 1 Preis Des Gestutes Ammerland Beyerisches Zuchtrennen at Munich July 31, 1994.

He rode for leading trainer Peter Rau in 1995 and finished fifth in that year’s Deutsches Derby Group 1 on Artan.

In November 2000 Rikki moved to Dubai with his wife Katja (who had also ridden in races) and his daughters Janine and Chelsea. There he was put in charge of preparing the yearlings and two-year-olds. He spent the winters in Dubai and the summers in England.

He is now part of the maintenance team at Tattersalls Park Paddocks in Newmarket and lives in the town.
