Thomas Loates Miller was a nephew of three-time champion jockey Tommy Loates and was named after his famous uncle. He was apprenticed to George Chaloner and won on his very first ride in public, Short Circuit, in the Apprentices’ Plate at Epsom on April 23, 1902.

He scored his two biggest victories in the month of June 1903, winning the Manchester Cup on Zinfandel and the Wokingham Stakes on Glass Jug.
