Richard Marvin

National Hunt jockey Richard Frank Marvin was born on July 4, 1942. Better known by his nickname ‘Bomber’, he held a licence between the 1965/66 and 1969/70 seasons. He rode for Norwich-based trainer Tim Finch and had one winner from a limited number of mounts.

That one win was gained on 12-year-old Conkers Score, the 5-2 favourite, in the Alconbury Selling Handicap Hurdle at Huntingdon on August 29, 1966. Bomber had previously finished second on him un a similar contest at Market Rasen earlier that month.

He rode Conkers Score just once more, at Sedgefield on the first day of October. They were sent off evens favourite but could only finish fourth.

Those three rides on Conkers Score were among a total off 11 he had during that season. Two which he’d rather he hadn’t ridden were on another of Tim Finch’s selling hurdlers, Algeciras, which ended in an unseated rider at Fakenham in August and a brought down at Ludlow in September.

After retiring from riding in races, Bomber took out a trainer’s licence in the early 1970s, based at Field House Farm, North Kelsey, near Brigg, in Lincolnshire. He gained his first training success when Al Kezula the 13-8 favourite, obliged under jockey Jinx James in a Market Rasen selling hurdle on April 28, 1973.

Bomber was unlucky in that his two best horses, Ben More and Glanford Brigg, whom he trained in the early days of their careers, were both moved to Nottinghamshire trainer Jack Hardy before they’d had chance to realise their potential, leaving Bomber with horses of limited ability.

In 1974 he moved yards to Manor Stud, Harkstow, near Barton-on-Humber, but only trained there for a year or so before relinquishing his licence.
