George Mills

George Mills was born in London circa 1859. He was apprenticed to the Osborne brothers at Ashgill.

He achieved his first big race success on 33/1 outsider Grand Flaneur in the 1873 Portland Handicap at Doncaster.

In 1874 he rode 33 winners, including Dalham in the Chesterfield Cup. In 1875 he won Epsom’s City and Suburban Handicap on the same horse.

He left England in January 1876 to ride as first jockey for Baron Schickler at Chantilly.

He later trained there.

The 1873 Portland was run on St Leger Day, Wednesday, September 10, 1873.
